| #1 Posted on 18.5.04 1116.30 Reposted on: 18.5.11 1116.30 | Next up in the Green Bay Packers' search for a backup quarterback: Kerry Collins. <
The ex-New York Giants quarterback is scheduled to arrive in Green Bay tonight and visit the Packers' Lambeau Field headquarters Wednesday, an NFL source said Monday. <
Although Cleveland quarterback Tim Couch remains the Packers' top choice, contract talks with Couch have stalled, so the Packers are exploring alternatives. <
Damon Huard, who backed up Tom Brady in New England last season, visited last week, and now Collins, the best remaining quarterback on the free-agent market, will meet with Packers coach and general manager Mike Sherman and his staff. <
Collins, 31, was released by the Giants April 28. He was scheduled to receive a $7 million base salary this season, but wouldn't restructure his deal after the Giants traded for No. 1 overall pick Eli Manning on draft day. <
Collins, who completed 284 of 500 passes for 3,110 yards, 13 touchdowns and 16 interceptions for a passer rating of 70.7 in 13 starts last season, visited the Oakland Raiders last week. He is hoping for a chance to start, but after initially turning down the Packers' overtures, he has agreed to visit the club and at least entertain the idea of backing up Brett Favre. <
The fifth overall pick in the 1995 NFL draft by Carolina, Collins led the Panthers to the 1996 NFC championship game against the Packers. His career nosedived after that, however, and two years later, struggling with an alcohol problem, he quit the team. <
New Orleans signed him for the remainder of the 1998 season, and he joined the Giants in 1999, turning around his life and football career. In 2001, he led the Giants to Super Bowl XXXV, throwing for 381 yards and five touchdowns in the NFC title game. <
The Packers have 36-year-old Doug Pederson as Favre's primary backup and 2002 fifth-round pick Craig Nall as their No. 3. While Pederson performed well in the post-draft minicamp, Nall struggled with his accuracy and could be playing his way out of a job. <

This is the only explanation I can come with for the fact that Collins can look All-World one week and the worst QB known to man the next is that he has an evil twin brother who suits up in his place some days and it's a question sometimes as to which Collins shows up. In my house, this started off as a side comment and has snowballed into a life-of-its-own running joke. Otherwise, I can't explain. | StaggerLee

Tim Couch isn't going to find a better gig than Brett Favre backup at this point, so if he's holding out for money I say screw him. The Pack could do much worse than Kerry Collins as a backup. He would have started this season with Manning as second string. He would have made more money than he's going to get anyplace else for this year. Plus, he would strengthen his position to land a job for the following season. Most teams have pretty much locked up their starting jobs for the coming season and a lot have their backups locked in too. Collins is boxing himself in needlessly.

Mort has a take, kind of looking at it the other way, I guess. He thinks Collins going was the best thing for the Giants.
Excerpted from his chat today:
Question: Any chance that Collins and the Giants could work something out? He's not going to get a boatload of cash, or a real shot at a starting spot likely anywhere else.
Chris Mortensen: I thinking he won't. I just think it's a good idea that he move on - now that they have drafted Manning. Kerry was very popular in the locker room. He needed to cut the cord and so did the Giants, even if they did want him back under a restructured deal. | evilwaldo

Given Collins's history, I'm pretty sure that twin brother's name is TOM.
I'm still at a loss (other than him going out of his way to self-destruct) to why he didn't stay in NY. Or at least he could have made that decision BEFORE Miami picked up AJ F'N Feely.

And I thought I had shudders when the Kurt Warner to Miami rumors were around. Miami already has ONE QB with good day/bad day tendencies, do they really need a second? Although with Fiedler it's more of a case of him making 1-2 fuckups a game, but it's the fact that he picks the absolute 1-2 worst moments to commit them.
Although if I was a QB and I saw the offensive line that the Dolphins are looking to put on the field, that would be the LAST place I'd want to go if I valued my quality of life. I'm a lifelong Dolphins fan, but I'm also a realist. | Crimedog

I wouldn't be too unhappy with Couch if I were Green Bay. The guy can at least hit the admittedly not very dizzying heights of 'OK' while you're in transition between Favre and whoever follows him.
The back-up job at the Pack's a bit of posioned chalice simply because of how little playing time you get due to Brett never getting injured. Couch might just be as good as you can hope for as a result.
And look on the bright side. At least nobody's mentioned the words 'Stewart' and 'Kordell' in association with Green Bay. I almost pity the Ravens if that happens. Almost.... |
