| #1 Posted on 14.5.04 1559.50 Reposted on: 14.5.11 1600.26 | MovableType - personal blogging software (as seen on TheCubsFan.com) - announced yesterday that it's ready to release version 3.0 of it's software. And, oh yea, they're no longer (largely) free.
There still is a free version, but that's now limited to 3 and 1 Author. If I wanted to replicate my current setup on the new system (3 Authors), that'd be $70. If I wanted to add anyone else, the price jumps to $120. (This isn't even a commercial license - this is what they're charging to use their software in goofy ways that generate no money.)
At the same time, for similar service, Blogger would charge me a grand total of $0 and 00 cents.
You can guess how well this is going over. In fact, thanks to MovableType's own software, and the lack of foresight on their part to disable part of it on their own blog - the price announcement is followed by dozens and dozens of links to people upset by the change. That's a fantastic way to get it over. Promote this thread! | | PeterStork

| #2 Posted on 14.5.04 2216.10 Reposted on: 14.5.11 2216.13 | I just love this: people are given two and a half years of use of a wonderful piece of software, arguably the best blog management software in existence, without a doubt better than any of the other still "free" blogging programs, and when they're informed that, gasp, Ben and Mena Trott want to, I don't know, MAKE MONEY TO LIVE, these supporters turn on them like Flair tagging with Sting. Given that the Trotts don't have a job save running Six Apart and developing MT, and one estimate (admittedly, I have no source on this) I read pegged their current take at fifty cents per copy of MT, it's about time they had some money come to them. Open source is a nice idea, but people gotta live.
Meanwhile, I'm using MT 3.0 right now --- the free version. It does everything I want it to, including using the Recently Updated Key I received two years ago with my $20 voluntary donation. What's the gripe? Need to run two blogs? USE TWO COPIES OF MT. I do. Works just fine. Have a commercial site and don't want to pay more for a commercial license? Then don't make money. If you use Six Apart software to profit, then Ben and Mena deserve a cut. The multiple authors thing I understand, but if you have more than one person involved in the website then you've got more than one paycheck available to pony up the cash.
And hey, people, ever heard of Typepad? You know, the completely free no-strings-attached program launched a year ago when the Trotts warned us that MT 3.0 would cost cash money?
As far as the Trackbacks on the announcement post decrying the system: well, it shows just how awesome what the Trotts have developed is, not only with what we have from MT but all the other programs in development that have taken their cues from Six Apart. Maybe people can remember this and temper their pathetic rantings (this isn't you Cubs; your sane and factual post does not draw my ire like the people who practically call for fire and death to rain down upon the Trott household because they dare charge money for their life's work do) before they scare future developers away from creating free software. I know if I were in the same position that Ben and Mena were when they launched MT in fall 2001, I would be tempering my supporters enthusiasm upfront if not outright charging from the start before I lose the ability to thanks to user complacency. | Ruby Trax

So wait, fifty cents each isn't real money? That's high-concept.
HEY CHRIS!!! I think it's time you start charging people fifty cents to post here! Mommy needs BEER MONEY! Give us that PayPal link again, c'mo'.

I hear there are these crazy things out there called jobs where people actually make money. I admire Six Apart for realizing that they needed to retool their commercial licensing, but it's unfortunate they're removing the "personal" from "personal publishing." $20, OK fine, $30, OK maybe, but $99.95 at the least is a joke. Yeah introductory deal, whatever. I like their product and I intend to keep using it, but now my plans for it are limited. Personal plans which didn't even involve making money. Kind of like The W! Where everything is FREEEE

I've heard of it and hey pssst, TypePad is free ... for 30 days. After that it's between $4.95/month and $14.95/month. Unless that's not real money either, in which case perhaps The W needs to "retool" its "features" and "pricing." | Guru Zim

Which will probably be never, actually.
I paid $100 for this stupid NOLO press thingy and I don't have the time to do it. I should just hire a lawyer.
