I regret to say there will be no GBU this week as the forces of evil have allied against me.

Seems that the new Cox digital system will not allow you to tape a television program unless the cable box is left ON. This was something that I could have benefitted from knowing a day ago, but the fact is that I didn't get RAW taped and I have yet to actually watch the show.

Second, my laptop, which is crucial to me actually writing the column, is crapping out on me. I have to get it fixed, and until I do, I really can't put a column out. My desktop is in a room where it is facing away from the television set so that won't work.

Thirdly, what I gathered from reading a couple of RAW spoiler reports is that next week they will be splitting the roster. This means my Monday reports would only really be covering half of the company. I am going to rework my format to probably include Smackdown as well, so that may take a couple weeks to decide and lock down.

So, you won't see anything new from me for a couple of weeks...at least until the split is finalized. Sorry to disappoint both my readers but I am really kinda stuck here.

Be good, folks! Seeya soon!

We may not give feedback to you, but we still read you. I guess you can call me reader #3.

Good luck with your evil electronics updates.

I have the same problem with my Inisght Digital Cable system. With that box, I have to watch what I'm taping or I'll tape whatever I switch to.

To counter this, I got an A/B splitter, so that when I want to record something, I switch my viewing to the old non-digital cable which allows me to tape multiple shows and on different channels, etc. while watching something else. The only problem with this, is that I can't record anything off the digital only channels while doing this (no VH-1 Classic, MTV X, or all of my movie channels except HBO-1 & 2), which kind of sucks, but you do what you gotta do.

Don't know if your problem is similar, but you might look into that, or just ignore it. Either way ;-)

Hey - as a cable company employee - I'd like to rail into you and blame you for your actions - since we aren't allowed to do this at work

As for the a/b switch guy - Why not run the cable box into the VCR so that you could tape off of digital, and then use the other line to the TV as straight analog cable and use your TV as the tuner? This way you can tape anything that you would get on the Digital cable but still watch a second show on the analog section.

Or is this what you were trying to say, except that you meant instead of taping off of digital that you couldnt watch a second show on the digital?

I gave in and picked up a second digital box for the bedroom so I just pick whichever room I think I'm going to be in and tape in the other. Some cable companies will let you do this, others won't. The one I work for won't, but I live in a different cable companies service area, so... eh.

Though the debate is fairly interesting, I have to restate what my actual issue was.

You see, Cox Digital Cable recently dumped Starsight as their menu system provider. They have developed their own online program guide.

When they did that, somehow, some way, they altered the way the box sends a signal to the television set and, by proxy, the VCR.

It used to be that I could tune to the channel that I wanted to tape, start the vcr recording, turn off my cable box (which shuts off the TV) and go do whatever I had to do. In spite of the cable box being off, my show would still tape as a signal was still being sent to the television.

Now, evidently, turning off the cable box cuts the signal to the television set. So what you get is a black screen with no sound. This was a change that coincided with the rollout of their new online program guide.

A change they never bothered to tell us.

So now, if I want to tape something and I am not home, I have to leave the cable box on (though I can shut off the TV set).

Does that clarify it?

That's why I suggested the A/B switch. If you did it that way you wouldn't have to leave the box on, but I also said you could ignore my advice too so . . .

Happy Birthday Guru!!
