| I probably should have started this in HERE, huh?|
The first thing we do is figure out a way around the place. the multi stage setup is kinda weird to me. That takes a little while as more and more people are piling in. This set list is fucking stupid as fuck How am I supposed to see Kool Keith with Kraftwerk playing at the same time? How am I supposed to see International Noise Conspiracy with FUCKING BECK and Junior Senior playing at the same time?? WHY THE FUCK DO THEY HAVE Death Cab For Cutie overlapping with Noise Conspiracy and!?!?!? Well THIS is gonna be a big, fun mess. I need to find beer and we don't see anyone selling. I'm told they have a 'BEER GARDEN'... WTF!! I have a feeling it's gonna be hard to get drunk around here.
The first group we actually get to see is Dios, and they were winding do their set I guess, we only heard 3 songs and from what I heard, I'm gonna have to look them up. I'd never heard of them and they weren't bad. I think they were spanish, but I couldn't quite be sure.
Howie Day is next and Serena couldn't be any more happier. She seems to be in love with them. OH, it's just one guy... Well, I didn't know. He's too whiny for me, it's like they're trying to hard to look cool onstage while sweating his balls off.
I make the decision to skip out on Kraftwerk tonight... god I fucking hate compromising for girls. I'm probably gonna regret it, but after looking at tomorrows set list, there's no fucking WAY IN HELL I'm gonna miss out on Belle & Sebastian OR Air cause it looks like Cursive AND BRMC are overlapping with them and Serena says she LOVES both these groups.
HEY! We see Abe Benrubi from ER on the way to get something to drink. I bother him for a minute to say how I've enjoyed his 'Jerry' character has progressed on the show and he thanks me for the compliment. He says ER is scheduled to be on the air through the 2007 season, but that NBC is actively looking for a show to replace it on the time slot. They might be moving it from thursdays next season or the season after that. DAMN! That's crazy.
We wait 20 minutes to get over priced pizza. I'm starting to notice that Serena is one of those people that eats a bunch of small meals a day instead of two or three larger meals. She calls them snacks. If I did this, I'd weigh a ton. But I sure could use a beer, it's fucking HOT out here. I get my beer... and another... and a third. I just blew $20 on 3 beers. Fucking Nazis, it's bad enough paying $2 for water.
It's well after 3:30 now, so we head over to see And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Our Dead(I'll shorten this to just 'Our Dead' from now on.) Excellent show. Serena likes them, she'd heard them before but didn't know the groups name. Kids today... Good, LOUD set, very energetic and vibrant. If they play like this in fucking 100+ degree weather, I'd KILL to see them in a nice, air conditioned venue.
We leave early to get over to the Gobi tent for Beck, and what a waste of time this turned out to be. MY GOD the people here! You can't even get near the tent, much less in it. Who the fuck decided to have Beck play on the smallest fucking stage out here. I'm thinking 'I can miss Beck.' and Serena says what I'm thinking out loud. We look at the set list and see that Junior Senior is about to go on, so we go over there.
If you EVER get the chance to see Junior Senior live, do so. We stayed for 20 minutes cause I told her we CAN NOT MISS Death Cab, and she agreed. Junior Senior is kinda fun. I'd have liked to stay and hear more, but I got priorities, damnit! I've since found out we missed Fred Schneider of the B52s come out and perform with them. Ah well, what can you do.
What can I possible say about Death Cab For Cutie. Great set, but they should have played later in the evening when it's cooler. Their type of music isn't really right for playing under a hot FUCKING sun like this. No Postal Service songs which was a minor let down, but still, one of the highlites for us so far. Serena was getting kinda frisky during the set, which I liked alot, but not with creepy people staring at us.
Sparta is a group I didn't much care for, but Serena likes, so we see them next after a pee break. Sparta's kiddie punk... or so I thought. I'd only heard two songs by these guys before the show and after hearing them live, I might be a convert. They're more like Foo Fighters without the over powering drums. I'm glad I heard them.
Taking off a decade or so from playing together doesn't seem to have stopped the Pixies. They played like they never broke up. Kim Deal is SO hot. NOW I remember why I liked the video for 'Cannonball' by the Breeders... it WAS NOT because I liked the song. The Pixies played very raw and animalistic in a way. They looked genuinely happy to be there and glad to be back together.
We ended up ditching a little early so as to grab more beer for me and a good spot for Stereolab for her. Beer good, beer COLD, beer still expensive... but atleast there wasn't a huge line this time.
Stereolab was ok. I don't think of them as a good LIVE group. They're one of those groups that NEED the glossy studio washing before you hear them. I was not impressed. Serena didn't get into it as much as she would have liked to as well, but for different reasons. Some guy came up to her and asked if she had any 'X' to sell while she was trying to dance and have a good time. Not cool! She spit on him. THAT was cool, and he didn't seem to care about it, so I'm thinking he didn't NEED any more drugs. She wanted to get out of there and head over to Radiohead. so we did.
HOLY FUCK! For a guy who, according to the internet, was talking like he had swallowed a bag of unmixed concrete, Thom York sounded fantastic! His opener, 'There There' was just a smidge off, but by '2+2=5'', that was forgotten. EXCELLENT set by Radiohead. I'm actually GLAD they didn't do 'Clocks'. It was GREAT hearing 'Creep' as well, cause I seem to remember Thom saying he didn't like doing it anymore at shows.
I'm getting tired, and I think Serena runs on Energizers cause she just WON'T quit. She's 'totally psyched' for Electric Six... which is PACKED! She can't even get in the tent, but atleast I can hear 'Man Machine' playing from where we're at. Serena asks what it is playing and I said it Kraftwerk. To which she says "That's what they play? I've heard that before, let's move over there." YES!!! THANK YOU Satan, God, Jehova, Cthulu... WHOEVER you are! Thank You. I guess we missed a few songs, but it WAS easier to get in this tent then it was for Electric Six. two versions of 'Tour De France', and she's happily dancing and having fun again. They came out for two encores, 'The Robots', and then Something off the Tour De France Soundtracks and 'Musique Non Stop'. I'm saddened that I missed them playing my favorite song by them, 'The Model'. But I'll live.
All in all, I'd say that if just saturday alone was the whole show... it was worth the $140 admission. Kraftwerk was amazing, a once in a lifetime experience to some of these people, myself included. The Pixies, again, incredible performance. Radiohead was absolutely fantastic, Death Cab For Cutie, while the sun was killing me, still did a great job, except for the techno music coming from the next stage over, was great as well. If Sunday is even a quarter as good as saturday, I could just die and be happy.
I'll have sundays done in a few days. These things take time to put into words, you know.

I saw them for their "Hey it's been a year since we've played our hometown, so we better go play there" show at the Majestic in Detroit (good news/bad news in that I'll be seeing MC5 there on June 10th...hope the sound is better). Great band but the sound was TERRIBLE. Still going to see Kraftwerk instead of them is a good idea because it's KRAFTWERK!
Looking at the list of bands goes to show just how out of the loop I am...and just a year and a half ago I was in the know of everything music at my college station. I hope Sunday was just as good for you!

I would be glad they didnt play CLOCKS as well, seeing as how it is a ColdPlay song.
