It what will surely make all sound bytes tonight, Rumsfeld's testimony this morning was LOUDLY interrupted by Protestin', including signs, banners and unintelligible yelling and chanting. I guess * some * kind of point was made, Rumsfeld no sold it...

How they got into the hearing room is a matter of speculation. I'm sure both sides will have the appropriate "spin" on this - my opinion is what happened, happened. Using the prisoner abuse and so called "scandal" for political purposes (by both sides) looks like something we will have to get used to...

watch it LIVE - now! Wall to wall coverage on the news channels...

This will make the news, but it was really so minor and irrelevant that it's a shame. So, rather than ask why nobody is addressing the allegations that they knew about this torture for months now, and is only acting on it now, we'll get a clip of inaudible screaming. Damn that liberal media!

Edit: Fuck all that. McCain's laying down the law is your new money shot.

Geeze, how intimidating would it be to be questioned about prisoner abuse by John McCain?

If there is anyone in the Senate who know first hand about prisoner abuse, it's McCain.

IMO, if they had been more aggressive and open from the start, "W"'s enemies wouldn't have much ammunition. From the latest reports, it appears they were apprised of the situation a year ago by the Red Cross.

The way politicians (on BOTH sides of the aisle, to be fair) handle stuff like this is kinda like the 9 year old that never ever figures out that no matter how many times they try to come up with a good cover story or a lie by omission, Mom and Dad always find out anyway when it all could have been avoided by just admitting it at the start.

Here's the latest making the rounds

French TV screens images 'of US helicopter crew killing Iraqis'

And a communications transcript...

"He's Wounded." - "HIT HIM!"

I'm pretty sure that killing the wounded, especially when they pose no immediate threat, is against international law. Even if it is not, this is still pretty hard to justify.

You know, I got this same video in a forwarded email about three weeks ago...no lie. I don' t know what that says about the French stealing it from Iraq or whatever.

Let me ask the Republicans here - can we please make a trade - We get John McCain (who, unsuprisingly, really tore into Rumsfeld more than anyone else. I wonder why he doesn't take this kind of military abuse lightly?) in exchange for that lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit GOP-wannabe Joe Lieberman. If you missed it - Joltin' Joe essentially said that the Iraqis should consider themselves lucky to get an apology because we never got an apology for 9/11 - which is such an inflammatory, arrogant and racist comment that I hardly even want to dignify it with a response.

You left out in-informed

Lieberman does know that al Queada committed 9/11, not Iraqi, right?

Granted the jury is still out on exactly how many ties were between Iraq and bin Laden...But Osama did it, not Saddam.

Bah...

Too bad McCain isn't a nominee for Pres.

You want to trade McCain for someone who ran on the same ticket as Al Gore?? Thanks, but no thanks.

If you could make him about 20 years younger, we might be interested in taking Zell Miller off your hands... ;-)

Did I ever mention how much I really, REALLY wish McCain would change his mind on running with John Kerry? A Kerry-McCain superteam would work on so many levels.

McCain, while firmly right-wing, is also a good American who recognizes that this isn't the American way. I was very happy to see him tear into Rumsfeld, because someone needs to take responsibility for these actions that will make our country even MORE hated in the eyes of the rest of the world.

The new pictures don't make things look any better. I shudder to think about what's not on camera or what else is actually on camera. These three photos may be everywhere by now.

(EDIT: I tried but can't link directly to the pictures, but there were three new ones that I had never seen. If you are truely curious I saw them at ogrish.com under the 'War' section. They might be everywhere by now though, I have yet to turn on a t.v.)

From CNN: Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told congressional investigators that videos and "a lot more pictures" exist of the abuse of prisoners at the prison. "If these are released to the public, obviously it's going to make matters worse," he told the Senate Armed Services Committee. "I mean, I looked at them last night, and they're hard to believe."

True, heads have got to roll for this, but how far up the chain of command did this knowledge of abuse go. If there is so many pictures they had to have made some rounds. Everytime I see new ones things look worse and worse. I never liked Rumsfeld, but how high up the chain do you keep chopping because of something like this?

These pictures will cause a lot of problems down the road for Americans everywhere.

Actually, CT would like to make a trade with, well, any other entity. Lieberman and Ann Coulter for a potted plant. Doesn't even have to be real, we'll take ANYTHING.

No matter how high it goes up the food chain, even to dubya, everyone who new about this abuse and failed to stop it, should be unemployed, and hopefully facing charges of one sort or another, immediately.

McCain is hardly left-wing but right-wing? I think that is a stretch. For McCain-Feingold alone I think the ight woulf disown him. I respect him very much but he falls into the Dole mold to me. More interested in looking for solutions and working with both sides.

From the AP:

Analysts describe the pictures as great recruiting tools for al-Qaida and other extremist groups and said they undermine America's claims to a moral high ground. Rumsfeld said the impact was ''radioactive ...

...Political scientist James Thurber of American University likened the Iraq images to the infamous Vietnam pictures of a naked young girl fleeing a napalm attack and a Viet Cong prisoner being executed on a Saigon street.

Referring to the new pictures, Thurber said, ''That's what we're going to remember about Iraq. It's just not going to go away. That may have a lasting and negative effect on his campaign. It certainly does right now and I think you'll see it in the polls immediately.''

It's amazing what a minority of servicemen can do for this nation as a whole. Who knows the next 9/11 could be recruits from this incident. All jokes of trades aside,I fear that this may be the single worst thing that could have come out of Iraq. We may not feel it now, but we will feel it. Revenge!?

The description of the new photos sounds like it just gets worst. From the New Yorker Magazine "showed the man cowering from the dogs and said other photos existed from the same scene, showing the prisoner on the floor with blood pouring from a wound."

Rumsfeld at the least needs to take the fall. How can Bush condemn the actions of what happened and allow Rumsfeld who knew was going on and didn't tell him(if that is indeed true)... But If you listen to Dick Cheney he wants us to just "get off his case" and that "Rumsfeld is the best secretary of defense the United States has ever had." Saying that right during such a controversial week is pathetic.

The thing that keeps getting in my mind is, If this sort of stuff is going on in Iraq. What the hell is going on in the more secretive Guantanamo Bay!
