Has anybody seen the complaints about Oprah on the Smoking Gun website?

http://thesmokinggun.com/ archive/0504044oprah1.html

With the fines impending, Howard Stern has taken the FCC to task for not going after Oprah, for a show where she talked about teenage sex. She described such acts as Tossing the Salad and Rainbow Parties.

Needless to say, urged by Stern (and Jimmy Kimmel on his show) the FCC has gotten something like 1600 complaints about Oprah's show. It should be interesting to see if anything comes from this, what with Oprah being America's Sweetheart. Sure, the FCC can pick and choose, but when the volume of complaints is that large, somebody should look into it.

Of course, many of the complaints could be fake. Some are very funny (the lady whose son's head "literally exploded"), some are very offensive, and others look like they were written by the same people who get their posts boosted into the "Banished" folder here on the W.

What Howard doesn't seem to understand is that it isn't simply what you are talking about but how you do it. And I doubt that 1600 is huge.

It's the second most complained about show next to Janet Jackson. The typical Stern show that gets fined gets 1-10 complaints, and they're all from the same person.

Compare the transcripts: http://www.howardstern.com/oprah.html

They claim Howard was indecent because he tried to "shock and titiliate" the audience which is not true because it's documented since day one that his show is just him saying what he feels. His goal is to entertain, same as Oprah's. An assistant to the FCC Chairman has already said they won't fine Oprah because she's "beloved" but its easy to fine Howard because he's a "lightning rod".

Part of the problem is that these "complaints" aren't exactly presented in the most professional of manners.

I almost fell out of my chair laughing by reading the name of the organization at the end of the first letter, though.

Yeah true but Smoking Gun picked the most absurd ones from the bunch.

I like the one that says "my child's head literally exploded."

Yeah, "Citizens against Unclean Network Television" is also my favorite. Although the head exploding with the helpful "please ban free speech immediately" cure-all rocked too.
