Did anyone catch SportsCenter for 5-2-04? They had a piece about a Buffalo Sabres goalie back in the late 80's. I think his name was Clint Marashuck(sp?). Anyway, somehow a player's skate punctured an artery in his neck and they showed the clip and in seconds, there was prob. a 5 foot trail of blood squiriting from his neck. Anyone see it?

you can read all about clint malarchuk

here's the excerpt from the link:

Unfortunately Malarchuk is best remembered for one of the most horrific injuries in all of hockey history. Tragedy struck on March 22, 1989 when his jugular vein was cut by a skate. A goal mouth collision involving St. Louis Blues winger Steve Tuttle and Buffalo defenseman Uwe Krupp saw Tuttle's skate slice Malarchuk's neck. Malarchuk clutched at his bloody neck as doctors were rushed on to the ice to save his life. As it turned out he spent only one night in the hospital and competed in the NHL only a couple of weeks later. But it could have been so much worse - perhaps even fatal.

I remember when that happened. I don't recall doctors coming onto the ice, I believe he skated himself off. IIRC, he was on the end where the zamboni entered/exited. They said if he was on the other end of the ice, he probably would have died.

Why did they decide to break out this decade-old footage now?

Maybe that's a dumb question, I'm only learning how to be a hockey fan.

Is that a real pic? It looks like it could be a fake.

As an aside, did anyone see the big AHL stick-to-the-face brouhaha over the weekend? It was hard to get a clear idea of what happened from the newspaper reports only.

It was more of a story about his problems dealing with depression then his problems with the injury. He was diagnosed with OCD and tried to kill him self but he has fought threw all of it and was a goalie coach for the Panthers this year. It was just another Sports Center piece dealing with athletes problems that they always have.

They were doing a story about the fact that it was 15 years ago this week, and he later sorta tried to commit suicide because of OCD. Now he's the goalie coach for the Panthers.

Incidentally, that picture is real.

You are pretty lucky you haven't seen it. The Cleveland player gave a pretty good slash to the Hamilton player, who then turned 180 degrees and smashed his stick, baseball style, into the Cleveland players face. The Cleveland player lay there in the crease, convulsing, while everyone else was in a melee.

It was disturbing to see - no blood or gore, but the guy was twitching like he'd been electrocuted or something.

Having said that, it didn't look premeditated, just a heat of the moment BAD decision. Still, considering the result and prior occurrences this year, I'm sure we'll see a long suspension.

JayJay, that pic is real. The footage they showed on ESPN is identical to that, except even more disturbing.

Clint Malarchuk? I went to elementary school with his daughter, Kelly (or Katie, I forget which one).

If you have never seen the video, it is pretty much like what you expect to happen when a person is cut in thier neck pretty deeply. Blood spurting out. The trainers were there and were able to hold pressure and he was brought directly to the hospital. Otherwise, he would have died within minutes.

One good thing did come out of that:

I missed a day of school after seeing the video on CNN's early morning news. Made me dizzy and pale enough to pass as being sick.
