A strange question, but this is the "random" forum. So I'm cleaning up around my parents house and find a bottle of Listerine... from 1997.

Being the bored out of my mind person I am, I look at the ingredients... the stuff's mostly various alcohols and water. I mean it's not like any of the ingredients have a half life or anything!

So I ask myself, since it's been closed properly, and it would in theory kill any germs that would be within it... is it usable?

And now I ask you... does Listerine really go bad or is it one of those products they stick an EXP date on more for show than anything else?

Anyone on The W chemical savy?

Yes I am this bored. Enjoy!

a) What's the EXP?

b) Has it ever been used?

c) Does it still smell like Listerine?

Well I know that products with alcohol in them, which can be used as a kind of perservative, still have a self life. Though offhand I can't say how long Listerine lasts, after all it is designed to kill bacteria... but then antibiotics go bad. But Fuelinjected asked the pretty relevant questions. The the only thing I can think to add is what is the average self life of the kind of alcohol used in Listerine, 'course I can't keep the different kinds straight at all.

1.) Mix Listerine with OJ, maybe a little vodka.

2.) Give to DEAN~!

3.) Await full report on Wienerboard in next booze review.

There should be an 800 number somewhere on the bottle?

well for the record me and my girlfriend just moved out of our old apt. we cleaning her room and same thing happened. found this old bottle of Listerine unopened she said would have been there since about 98 or so. now you all will think I'm fucked but as a joke(a stupid one but i enjoy doing fucked up shit to see ppls reactions to it)i chugged it right down like it was an ice cold brew. felt kinda of fucked for about 20 Min's and insides burned. but that was about month ago and I'm fine. and keep in mind a drank the shit, not used it to cleanse my breath. so my theory is it's fine.

of coarse rereading what i just read i sound like a mental case. ah well

Kids, don't try this at home.

I'm pretty sure this stuff is fatal in large enough doses, but I can't remember for sure. I think this came up in one of my Psychology classes (the LD50 of Listerine that is). I'll have to see if I can find anything on the web when I'm less busy.

This thread ended up...strangely informative.

I just might call the number tomorrow and see what they say.

I definitely know I don't plan on drinking it, tis one of those massive bottles. Especially after those HarleM HeAt posts...

It does beckon to me though, sitting there so innocently on the table..."Drink me!" "Drink me!" "Drink....

I could only find information regarding mouth cancer and alcohol.

I did find that it is around 26% alcohol, and it is considered flammable medical waste by reverse producers of medical waste. Whatever the hell that means.

Odd.
