Can't believe I beat Grimis to this one...

That's it there on the newspaper. Two blue stripes for the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, a yellow strip for the Kurdish minority, and a blue crescent for Islam.

Of course, reaction on the street is negative. Some are ticked they swapped the PLO's colors for Israel's; others are mad the "God is great" scribbling Saddam had put on the flag after 1991's Gulf War is gone.

(Edit: This Guardian Unlimited article says there's more historical significance behind the colors we scrapped.)

Info courtesy: Washington Post and MSNBC...nothing updated on the Iraqi page of the Flags of the World website ...yet.

Hey, I was busy....

Anyhoo, this isn't going to make Iraqis happy, if only because of the elimination of the Pan-Arab colors that have been on the flag since independence.

It also looks a touch like a flag of truce...

Did Sweden, Israel and Turkey take over Iraq while no one was paying attention?

They really should've let popular opinion decide this one. Everybody could pick their favorite!

Was it really necessary to change the flag in the first place? It just seems so pointless to me, especially in a time when we are trying to get along with the Iraqi public.

The only thing that should've been done was the removal of the takbir(green writing) that was added two days before Gulf War I.

Why?

That seems to be the part that Iraqi citizens liked the most.

I'm pretty sure it's one of those calls for violence. Don't hold me to that though.

I believe the writing on the flag means "Allahu akbar" (God is Great). During the Iran/Iraq war, Saddam added those words to the flag to give his secular government a more religious feel, and to drum up support from his own people. It worked, and Muslims really liked that part of the flag.

You hit it on the head, man. Saddam had a way of occassionally staging photo ops of him in a mosque, or otherwise looking like a devout Muslim, when dude was anything but, in order to shore up support amongst his people...who back then, as Sunni, Shi'ite and Kurd, had only Islam in common. Pure PR bullshit.

Of course, "Allahu Akbar" is the rallying cry for Islam, and thus had its own worth and meaning to the Islamic Iraqi populace other than as a Saddam propaganda tool. So when we ditch something put there by Saddam before Gulf War I (more PR), the Iraqis don't see us as removing a symbol of the tyrannical Saddam regime...they see a bunch of heathens (read: non-Islamics) ditching a sacred symbol of Islam.

That's bad for us. What the hell the good solution would've been, I dunno. (And spare me the "the answer is, we never should have been there in the first place" bit. Ain't got time for it.)

But the worst part about the new Iraqi flag...can YOU imagine Adam Sandler doing his "crazy Arab" bit in front of THAT!? Just doesn't work, man.
