| #1 Posted on 21.4.04 1034.38 Reposted on: 21.4.11 1036.21 | Picked up a copy of the new album from Muse this weekend. ABSOLUTION is, in a word, incredible. It's similar to Radiohead, circa OK Computer, but with heavier guitar, a concert pianist and a more (if you can imagine that) pessimistic view of the world.
The first three tracks are really amazing and at first I thought the rest of the album tapered off a bit, but now I really think the rest of the album is really good - just in a not quite as good as the first three songs but better than most everything else kinda way.
The website is http://www.muse.mu/ though I haven't really looked at it and don't know what's available through the site. But just FYI.
Also grabbed the Von Bondies "Pawn Shoppe Heart" and "Lifted or the Story Is In the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground" by Bright Eyes (Conor Oberst).
While these two albums are very good upon first listen, I'll reserve comment because I was so blown away by the Muse record that I probably wouldn't give the other two their deserved props. Promote this thread! | | FMW

But then again, three of the four best songs have been the singles (Stockholm Syndrome, Time Is Running Out, and Hysteria), so it probably would've been better for me if those songs were new to me. But yeah, that and the Liars album are my early AOTY candidates, though that'll probably all change once I finally get the Franz Ferdinand disc... | FMW

Now THIS is my Disc of the Year, just an awesome awesome album. Soooo many great tunes, it's tough to pick a favourite. There really isn't a weak song on the whole album. | The Amazing Salami

Well, fortunately (or unfortunately) I live in an area with one radio station that isn't country music and it plays only Top 40 pop stuff. So, I bought this with no clue what it would sound like outside of one or two random reviews I read on it. So you can see why I was so floored. | dMp

I believe the first I heard of them they were described as what would have happened if Radiohead would have made bombastic rock tunes. And yeah, they like to lace their songs with pianos, big guitars and all that.
I saw them live twice, the singer is a maniac, doing quite some posing with his guitar but backing up every single bit of it.
Wasn't Absolution from '03 btw? | The Amazing Salami

According to the website...It appears to have a release date of Sep 2003....I don't know if that's the US release date also.
Either way....I said "new" album because living in rural Oklahoma it takes that long for a released record to get her if it's not super mainstream. Lucky to get it at all...I looked in three different record stores and ONE story had ONE copy of it. | Feely

*comforts you poor Americans* There was also Showbiz btw (I forgot about Hullabaloo) so that makes four. All albums are worthy of getting. | The Amazing Salami

OK. So I picked up a copy of this disc the other day. And I guess I don't get it. It's alright...not bad at all. But nothing great, imho. I didn't like it as much as, say, the Von Bondies, even.
The vocal melodies are a bit repetitive (and I mean throughout the record, not just on one song). The music is great, but so.....small. I guess maybe that's it. I like BIG music (which is probably why I loved Muse right away). But I really like the White Stripes, too, and that's WAY small music.
FF just reminded me of the Strokes (and therefore about 50 other bands) without the annoying vocal overdrive effect the whole time.
That being said...I liked Auf Ausch (or whatever that track is called) the best. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
