Tonight: the songs of Barry Manilow. I can only name a couple of them myself, so there will be less of an idea for more of what these songs SHOULD sound like compared to Elton John night. We got right before the show and I had to get Izzy Jo ready for bed, so I missed the big "the Idols get to know Barry"-bit, surely a big loss for me. I did get to see the Idols point out that George is the bathroom hog, however, and I think we should explore that during the results show instead of another useless Ford ad.

Diana DeGarmo starts off, looking and acting very much like Celine Dion Jr. Her performance of "One Voice" is quite good, although I agree with Randy that she started off a bit shaky. She definitely powers through the last note, her one superior skill compared to the rest that are left. I think she did quite well, even getting a compliment from Simon that it was her best so far. I can't imagine Jennifer or Jasmine sounding better.

George is second with "Trying to Get That Feeling Again". Does he have a cold? Is his voice strained from the weeks of performing? 'Cause this is not good. No power in his voice, and he tries to compensate by jazzy-ing up the song, which doesn't work. This is his worst performance by FAR, and makes Diana look that much better by comparison. Hopefully he's just under the weather, and I doubt he'll go after this week with John Stevens still in the competition, but might we see George in the bottom three? Possibly, unless some others come up short this week.

Jennifer Hudson. Singing Barry Manilow. In capri pants. *shudder* She actually sings "Weekend in New England" pretty well, although her voice is so powerful (read: LOUD and DEEP) that she has trouble holding the big notes without going "aheeaheeaheeaheeaheeah". I just can't wait to see her GO, but Mrs. JJD says she did as well as Diana, so I defer to her more objective opinion and grudgingly give her props.

On the plus side, I'm now convinced "Barry" is being played by Dana Carvey in heavy makeup. And they show the "shaving lady" from "The Swan", which I don't watch, but they seemed to do an incredible job on her face, even if it looks kind of blocky and fake in the lighting. (Does that make sense?)

Jasmine is up next, sans flower, and looking like she's trying to get into a club with a fake ID, but in a good way. Like if she got in you'd hit on her, but hopefully she'd let you know she's 17 BEFORE any laws were broken. Anyway, she's not as good a singer as Diana, but she's a lot better performer than the young, wooden Celine Jr., and she does a nice job on "I'll Never Love This Way Again". Simon notes that the "silly" flower is gone, but apparently Jasmine (or Jazzy, if you're Ryan Seacrest; hey, she's STILL 17, Ryan!) has snuck the flower in somewhere. We don't get to see the flower. And thankfully "Barry" reminds me that Dionne Warwick ("well, he thought he was Dionne Warwick") performed the original song, because MAN, that was bugging me that I couldn't place it. Solid work from Jasmine, and with only three remaining George is clearly that weakest performance so far.

LaToya follows Jasmine with "All the Time". I'm starting to hope LaToya wins, because she, at 25, is a WOMAN, and she's starting to win me over with the "glittery tank top thingy with jeans" ensemble. And she can sing a little, too, and considering she doesn't have Fantasia's charisma (or "spastic" tendencies, depending on your point of view) or Jennifer's "big-ness" she's the best gimmick-free singer on the show. She's certainly the one left you'd want to see on, say, "Regis and Kelly", compared to Fantasia and Jennifer, who should never speak. Ever. The song? She does her typically fine job, probably better than anyone else so far, and she's so effortless on stage you can tell she's nearly ten years older than Jasmine and Diana.

John Stevens OF COURSE is singing Mandy. He might have more (some?) feeling in the song if he changed it to "Randy", or maybe "Brandon". Between "Barry" and John, what do you suppose the over/under is on the number of female breasts they'll see in their adult lives, 1/2? John's is an inoffensive rendition of "Mandy", kind of like CLay Aiken would do. But without Clay's charisma. Or Clay's talent.

Finally, it's Fantasia, who should bring the crowd back to life following John's performance. "It's a Miracle" is the song of choice, and it's good if a little too gospelly for my taste. I mean, it was GOSPELLY. She'd better tone that down, because I'd be willing to bet that a good bit of America doesn't "get" the gospelly thing and it could cost her votes, but on this night she continues the trend of good show-closing performances.

I'd say the five ladies were about equal this week, with George and John clearly being the weakest performances. It wouldn't surprise me to see anyone except LaToya and Fantasia in the bottom three this week (including George), but this has gotta be the week we say "good-bye" to John Stevens, isn't it? Anyone else would be a major upset.

What, they didn't bring The Coach on for a special appearance, dancing and singing the Copacabana, and then getting his ass shoved to one side by The Rock?

John Stephens must go. My wife still likes him, but I am thinking she thinks he's her little brother or something. Cowell freaking broke me up saying he looked like Stan Laurel. We both yelled "YES!" at the TV when he said that.

We were not too fired up for Fantasia this week, though. She was shouting at me! She changed the song way too much. If she'd sung it straight, it'd been better.

George was god-awful. He may be living on past glories by squeaking by this week. And I know CRZ will be absolutely crushed if George goes home, but he stunk up the joint this week.

The rest of the female singers were all pretty good this week. Celine Jr. (thanks, JJD), Jasmine, LaToya and Jennifer were all pretty good this week.

Bottom Three Prediction: John, George and Celine Jr., with John getting the ax. Please. Please.

Missed Celine Jr putting the little dunks to bed

George was awful and he hasn't been great for a couple of weeks now - past glory can only carry him so far

Jennifer can sing but someone needs to teach her how to dress

Jasmine was the best she has been so far but please quit trying to hit that last power note - it does not work

LaToya - I can see her winning and think Simon wants her to win

Little Sinatra was horrible again - no inflection and a monotone tenor - I also blame him for my having that song in my head during my commute this morning. And even better than Simon's line about Stan Laurel was Little Sinatra's look of "Who is Stan Laurel ?"

Fantasia - NO MELODY - ALL SCREECHING - ALL POWER NOTES - if I wanted Tina Turner I would put Tina in my disc player - and what is with FOX pushing her kid down our throats ? An observation that Mrs. Dunk made was that the child didn't try and go to her mother when Seacrest carried her out and Fantasia didn't try to take her from him until he basically told her to take her child.

I see George, Celine Jr. and Little Sinatra in the final 3 and hopefully Little Sinatra will get the Obit video....

Great swerve tonight as they flipped the bottom half into the top.

I was glad to see Jenny get the boot. She takes a slow song and makes it even slower. She really did a bad broadway rendition of circle of life. Her performance this week had way too much church gospel in it.

Very disappointed in the song choices. I was counting on Laytoya or Jasmine to do Copacabana. My wife stayed up all night waiting for Copacabana and was pissed that nobody did it. I also would've liked Coming to America for the cheap USA pop.

I'm not sure where all the John Stevens hate is coming from. His Mandy was inoffensive yet a very popular song. He may not have the range or power of Clay Aiken, but still. He shouldn't be sitting for half the performance. I'd never give a speech without standing, because you can't project your voice.

I can respect Randy because he never liked Clay from day one. Simon and Paula flipped from loving him to hating him for being too young. His voice hasn't changed at all from the first day, either you like it or you don't. How many 16 year olds remember Stan Laurel? All I know is he wasn't the fat guy.

I hate Jennifer as much as anyone, and no one is happier to see her go than me, but it's a travesty that she got the boot before John Stevens. It's also ridiculous that Diana, Jasmine, and John were the top three, BUT Mrs. JJD and I did some heavy analysis and we've got a couple of theories as to what happened last night.

- Notice Ryan hasn't talked about the "record" voting numbers for a couple of weeks. Maybe the Fantasia voters got lazy, or maybe they got their cell bills and thought this would be a good week to skip voting, because surely John was going.

- Is it possible that with seven finalists the fact that four are African-American was bound to cause a couple of them to cancel each other out? Fantasia and Jennifer's sounds certainly aren't for everyone. Could middle (read: white) America have voted en masse for Jasmine, Diana, and especially John while the bottom three's vote totals suffered? Not in a racist way or anything, but there's a reason there's an R&B chart and BET.

- If there are two people who seem to come across as NOT humble and as people you probably wouldn't like if you knew them, Fantasia and Jennifer are those people.

Anyway, total shock at the results last night. And what was with George? They have a bottom THREE. There were two groups of three on stage, so whichever group he joined would be the safe group, because he'd be the fourth member, yet he acts like they might go "SURPRISE! Everyone's safe but YOU, George!" Apparently the Idols aren't great at math or deductive reasoning.

We were stunned at home too when we turned it on in the final minutes and saw Fantasia & Jennifer standing there. It should have been Little Sinatra and only Little Sinatra and everyone watching out there (including the pre-pubescent & teenage girls with their cellphones) knows it.

I cringe in anticipation of Salsa Night next week with Gloria Estefan - Little Sinatra crooning Do the Conga (or whatever it's called) will be painful.....

A couple of other thoughts about the results show...

- Randy Jackson: "This is not a popularity contest." Hey, dumbass, when you tell America to call in and vote for their FAVORITE, that's EXACTLY what it is. Seacrest doesn't tell America to vote for the "best singer", DAWG.

- And what was with Seacrest throwing Diana, Jasmine, and John under the bus? He basically stood on the stage and called America out, like you'd have to be idiots
to be choosing THOSE three over THESE three. Even Simon mentioned that Diana and Jasmine had done a good job, and Ryan kind of scolded America for their voting choices at the end of the show.

- Jennifer Hudson's farewell song got cut off at the end. Too bad. NOT.

As good as they (mostly) all did Tuesday, I except them all to suck next week, if this is the case. Can we bring Leah and Amy back for this, they might have had some potential for that genre.

Honestly, with last night's results, what thought is scarier, John Stevens or Jennifer Hudson on Salsa Night. I'd say it's a toss-up. (Or more appropriately, a "throw-up".)

Jennifer stunk at the beginning of the competition but she's improved by leaps and bounds. She even managed to get her crazy facial expressions under control. No way she was more gospelly than Fantasia this week. I find Fantasia to be the most arrogant out of all the contestants, but she was sweet to tell Jennifer she was her American Idol. It was a travesty they cut off Jennifer as she was singing. Did anyone notice Fox played too many commercials during the first break? Must have been six minutes of commercials. When they cut back, they already put Fantasia in Group A and telling Diana to go to Group B. I don't understand who keeps Diana in this competition. Celine Jr., she is not, talent-wise. Poor George looked like he knew he didn't deserve to be there. I think John Stevens knows that too. Get that hack out of there, pronto!

I don't find Fantasia to be arrogant, I just think people are confusing confidence (which she has in spades...because she is that damn good) with arrogance.

I didn't see it in the Next Thread listing when I was going through, and since I have Mark Forum Read, it was (almost) unavoidable. It also hasn't been a problem in the last couple of weeks. I will alter my navigation strategery next week though, to avoid this.

I'm sorry about the spoiler thing. I wasn't thinking about people not on the east coast. I remember I didn't like the spoilers in the Survivor thread so I didn't do it intentionally.

I'm hoping all of the people complaining about other people's voting habits all voted themself. I never voted for anyone, so I can't complain about these results.

I'd also like to see how many votes are cast in this thing. I'll bet the presidential election gets less votes than this stupid contest.

Sometimes it's nice if the poster puts more than "interesting" in their post. What did you find interesting? Jennifer's hometown couldn't watch or vote because of twisters? The show being rigged? Americans are racist?

I can't think of what Barry Manilow song you're thinking of here. I suspect you're actually referring to the song "America" by Neil Diamond.

What?!?! So I know Neil Diamond songs... My Dad is a big fan!!

(Disclaimer: I do not watch the show, but all they talked about on the radio this morning was the Jennifer Hudson thing)

It would seem to me that the only way for American Idol to somewhat insure that the "right" people getting booted, would be to have America vote off a cast member rather than having them vote for their favorite.
The format would not have to change, as you could still have the bottom 3, but this way the voters could all vote for the crappiest instead of trying to save one person & diluting the vote for the worst performer.

Just a non-fan's opinion...
