Coke Launching Mid-Calorie Cola

ATLANTA (AP)--Coke is launching a mid-calorie cola that promises half the sugar, carbohydrates and calories of its regular version.

The Atlanta-based company said Monday that Coca-Cola C2 will debut first in Japan and then the United States this summer.

The company has been researching the idea for a year.

There will be subtle packaging differences to distinguish between the new drink and the company's flagship brand.

In January, PepsiCo Inc. said it, too, was looking at the idea of selling a mid-calorie cola. At the time, spokesman Dave DeCecco said the Purchase, N.Y.-based company had applied for a patent for Pepsi LS, which some have speculated stands for low sugar. The company later named its mid-calorie cola Pepsi Edge and said it would debut in the United States this summer, roughly the same time as Coke's version, DeCecco said Monday.

Cadbury Schweppes hinted at an industry conference in New York in December that it is looking at a lower-calorie version of Dr Pepper.

In trading on the New York Stock Exchange, Coca-Cola shares were up $1.07 to close at $53.00.

So Pepsi will have Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi One, and Pepsi: Edge? Do they even make Pepsi One anymore?

Just to note something else Coke is trying to do.....

Coca-Cola bring out handbag-sized cans

Coca-Cola has launched a 'mini-break' Diet Coke designed to fit into women's bags without taking up too much space.

This move follows the success of magazines such as Glamour and Cosmopolitan, which slimmed down to compact size in order to be more portable and to fit more easily into bags.

A spokeswoman for the company told the BBC that the can would better "fit in with today's hectic lifestyles".

"This is primarily aimed at women and will be promoted in the women's press," she added.

Diet Coke with Lime is the greatest diet soda ever invented, IMO. It doesn't even taste like diet soda.

Regular Coke has 37.5 g of Carbs (Sugar) and 150 calories. So this new Coke would still have 18.75 g of Carbs (Sugar) and 75 calories.

That's hardly a big difference. But it'll make people think they're being "healthier". Like at McDonalds, people will get the Big Mac, tons of fries and oh, a C2. No regular coke for me, I'm watching my sugar.

The true test is in the taste. If it tastes good, I'm sure people will buy it instead of regular coke but if it doesn't, why bother? It's still loaded with sugar.

The only time I remember drinking Pespi One was back in 1999 and I drunk it just because I was collecting the Episode I cans.

And what is Pepsi: Edge?

They still have it on the shelves in NY too. My Dad loves the stuff (although I really don't know why).

I'm just waiting for Pepsi to come out with their answer to Diet Coke w/Lime. If the Pepsi version is better in the way that Pepsi Twist is better than Lemon Coke, then we may have the greatest soda of all time!!

But will it taste the same? Because the taste of diet soda (especially Coke and Pepsi) is revoting (IMHO).

New Coke was SO nasty.

I was going with just the regular cola flavorings, but, don't forget the diet versions of both of those, and the two Pepsi Twists.

God damnit! If you want to diet, DON'T DRINK SODA! I can't believe that the companies can get away with putting out all crap and have people actually buy it. If you want to lose weight, DRINK WATER.

It really isn't that hard. I used to drink on average 64 oz.s of Mountain Dew a day. I haven't had any in well over a year. It isn't that hard to quit. Just don't buy any! Wow, I'm sorry, but I just can't believe that people buy this stuff.

It is hard to completely revamp your diet, but things like Soda should be the first to go!

But soda is tasty and provides necessary caffeine!

I guess "RC Edge" must have been discontinued or Cadbury/Schweppes would start howling at Pepsi...unless they're just completely unaware they ever MADE and trademarked an "edge" cola...

Only if they bring back Crystal Gravy, too. Mmm... and the ads were so appetizing, too.

As for soda, I'm with Shep. Although it was a lot easier than I'd thought it would be to just go to water. 'Sides, for best results, everyone knows you add yeast, barley, and hops.

Well, perhaps if New Coke had merely supplemented, and not replaced, the original Coca-Cola, people would've been more positively inclined towards it. New Coke had a decisive test-taste advantage over both Coca-Cola and Pepsi. But during those tests, they couldn't ask the most important question: How would you feel about the product were it to replace Coca-Cola? After all, if they asked that question, the cat would be outta the bag.

Having said that, I've never actually had New Coke myself. It came out in 1985, and I was three years old at the time. And I only ever saw Coke II once-- a 2-liter bottle in a Kroger store about nine years ago.

Anyhoo. If you ask me, this low-carb thing is getting very weird. Beer companies had competing ads on the subject. We've got x less carbs than the other guys. Yeah? Well, you can burn x carbs channel-surfing. Hardee's is selling burgers that don't have bread. And now this.

It really makes me wonder if America is losing its collective mind all at once. Well, this and a whole buncha other things.

Snopes tells us why that was not possible:

The next hurdle was what to do with the original: continue to market it, or discontinue the product? The company was already seeing its sugar cola market shrink thanks to competing lines; it wasn't going to make its market share problems any worse by splitting its entry in the sugar cola category. Although New Coke and Classic Coke drinkers combined might outnumber Pepsi imbibers, it was a lead pipe cinch Pepsi would claim to have a more popular drink than one or both of them. This was too big a marketing advantage to hand to Coca-Cola's #1 competitor. Thus the decision was made to discontinue Coca-Cola when New Coke was introduced. Again, this looked great on paper wage the war between Coca-Cola and Pepsi, not Coca-Cola and itself.
