(From Drudge)

After just two weeks on the air, Air America Radio, the fledgling liberal talk-radio network featuring Al Franken and Janeane Garofalo, appears to have encountered serious cash-flow problems.

The CHICAGO TRIBUNE is developing a story, insiders tell DRUDGE, on how the network was pulled off the air this morning in Chicago and Los Angeles, the network's second- and third-largest markets, because, the owner of both stations said, the network bounced a check and owes him more than $1 million! A charge the network strongly denies.

A Chicago source familiar with the situation said a Multicultural representative showed up at WNTD's offices Wednesday morning, kicked out Air America's lone staffer overseeing the network's feed to the station from New York, switched over to a Spanish-language feed, and changed the locks on the doors...

Air America filed a complaint Wednesday in New York state Supreme Court charging Multicultural with breaching their contract and seeking an injunction to force Multicultural to restore the Air America broadcast on both stations.

Statement of Evan Cohen, Chairman of Air America Radio:

"Air America Radio is temporarily unable to be heard on WNTD in Chicago and KBLA in Los Angeles, but Chicago and Los Angeles listeners can still hear our broadcast on the web at airamericaradio.com and on XM Satellite Radio (channel 167).

"MultiCultural Radio Broadcasting's conduct in this matter has been disgraceful. To shut off a broadcast that listeners rely on without warning and in the middle of discussions is the height of irresponsibility and a slap in the face of the media industry. In addition, it is a clear violation of their contractual obligations, and we are seeking legal remedies against them in court."

and here http://www.nytimes.com/ 2004/04/15/business/media/ 15radio.html

"Arthur Liu, the owner of Multicultural, which is based in New York, was quoted on the Web site of The Chicago Tribune yesterday afternoon as saying that he had taken the action after his company tried to cash a check from Air America and it bounced.

The Tribune quoted Mr. Liu as saying that Air America, which is majority-owned by Progress Media, owed Multicultural Radio more than $1 million.

Mr. Liu did not respond yesterday to several messages left at his office.

Mr. Cohen, however, said that Multicultural owed money to Air America. He said that Mr. Liu's company had recently deposited a check from Air America for $315,000, and that it had cleared. But Mr. Cohen said that Air America had stopped payment on a second check, for $156,000, after Air America discovered that Multicultural had leased air time on its Los Angeles station to another programmer in February and March, before Air America went on the air on March 31.

While not broadcasting during that time, Mr. Cohen said, Air America had already leased that time from Multicultural and was thus entitled to any fees collected. "

Capitalism - you gotta love it. What would O'Franken say?

"Air America" is actually having to LEASE time on stations to get their broadcasts on the air?!?

That in itself tells me everything I need to know about the viability of this product.

If they are bouncing checks after 2 weeks, does that break Heyman's record?

It's not as if they can stroll down to the local K-Mart and buy a handful of radio stations. It's a bit more complicated than that.

Heyman's mark was actually broken I beleive in 2001 by would-be money mark John Collins (what, you mean you DON'T remember the MECW era and all that it meant?)

It's not uncommon at all. Jim Rome pays stations to air his show in many different markets. That's why Tony Kornheiser's last hour wasn't aired in many different markets (and why he bitched about it all the time).

Air America put up a "press release" that seems to have been taken down (at least I can't find it anywhere on their site including the press area. Oh yeah, they won't be silenced). Here's an AP story about the reaction to it:

US liberal radio flames out in LA, Chicago over billing dispute.

As I type this, both AAR.com and Drudge are reporting that a Chicago judge has granted a motion to keep them on there for the moment.

They just don't get it. Liberals tend to be younger... they need better sound than AM can deliver. They can be a voice of dissent all they want, but they're never going to be able to command the advertising money Rush and co. do because the audience isn't big enough.

Oh, and for the record here's the (now apparently phantom) "press release". Just remembered I posted it somewhere else earlier:

RIVERSIDE, MOTHERFUCKERS!!! And congrats on that whole "Portland" thing.

I think Air America was a good idea in premise but I think they went about it in the wrong way. It is never a good idea to start a business off too big and Air America did just that. If the Liberals really want a voice they should get individual shows on the air maybe on NPR. Having an entire station speaking about the same things airing the same opinions is just dull and I don't think would make for good talk radio. Hopefully after this fails (and it will)Al Franken will get a big time show starting in just one market and slowly build up to more. I think having a voice like Al for the Democrats could help combat the voices of Handy and Rush and add some much needed flavor in the national debates.

But this is what happens when you try to create a market for something nobody wants to listen to without the proper financial planning

Please don't faint Grimis but I agree. What they lacked was a business plan. They had a market if they knew how to develop it and how to identify and cultivate the proper personalities.
