Oh, please. There are plenty of funny conservatives, like... well, I can't think of any, but I'm sure they're out there.

Bob Dole.

That's about all that comes to mind, though.

You don't think Dennis Miller is funny?

How about P.J O'Rourke?

Jonah Goldberg?

Florence King?

and if we're talking people who are in office right now, I think Dubya has a pretty good sense of Humor, if not the greatest timing in the world. His little deal for the Radio and Television News Correspondents Association the other day on WMD (looking under the furniture in the Oval office for the missing WMDs and so on) was funny - and as Letterman shows, he often does a joke that's not a joke.

I used to, then I saw him on his CNBC show. Not good times. I actually feel sorry for him.

If you think it'd be funny to see Osama bin Laden jokingly throw a model airplane into a model of a skyscraper, George W. Bush is the President for you!

Dennis Miller - used to be funny, and still is once in a great while.

P.J. O'Rourke - occasionally funny.

Jonah Goldberg - never funny. Only has his job because of his ho-ass mom (like most conservatives, makes his living off his parents). Should be shot in the kneecaps whenever possible.

Don't know who Flornce King is.

Even if Dubya has a sense of humor, he should really wait until AFTER he's Prez to show it. Luckily it'll only be another 9 moths or so!

Whoever writes "Mallard Fillmore" is pretty funny though.

Are you kidding? That's gotta' be the worst comic in the newspaper. I know it must be in our local paper now as a way of "balancing" against the oh-so liberal "Doonesbury", but there are already enough unfunny comics in the paper.

I remember one week when both Doonesbury and Mallard Filmore were doing strips about the Dean campaign. It illustrated perfectly how terrible Filmore is. Where "Doonesbury" made jokes about the youth, inexperience and naivity of Dean supporters, Fimore just decided to say "I hate liberals."

At the same time, I'm glad our paper did start carrying Filmore, as it is probably the least funny comic I have ever seen (that tries to be funny). I wish I were making this up. I ignore all the other bad comics in the paper, like "Curtis" or "Funky Winkerbean" or whatever, but every time I read the comics I make sure to read "Mallard Filmore", just to see how bad it is. It's like a two trains full of really unufunny people ran into each other.

Perspective is a funny thing. Flip "Doonesbury" for "Mallard Filmore" in the above quote, & I'd say it's spot on...

As far as the assertion that there are no funny conservatives & only liberals are funny, it is so ridiculous I can't believe it even warrants an example. (which of course I will now provide :-)

In addition to those mentioned above, I'd add Tough Crowd's Colin Quinn, Jim Norton & a few other stand-up types whose names I can't recall.
Anthony from "Opie & Anthony" is a conservative, & HE'S the funny one of the two!

Basically to say that one side has the humor & the other doesn't is ridiculous. Especially when you look at the most recent Democratic candidates the last two Republicans.I can't imagine anyone arguing that Gore & Kerry are funnier than Dole & "W"...

Actually, I always thought of Ant as middle-of-the-road with a slight tilt to the right, particularly given his hatred of the Clintons. He's said in the past that he's not a Republican or a Democrat, but rather a "free thinker."

And I personally find Opie funnier, but mainly because he's just a psychotic asshole.

Does it count if I laugh with Dole, but at W?

What, you don't get "Cathy" or "Family Circus"?

(Although I will agree, Curtis and Funky Winkerbean ARE pretty brutal.)

The thing is, "Family Circus" is not funny in some schmaltzy, sentimental way (except when it's creepy and dealing with dead people) and "Cathy" is not funny in some womanly, whereas the punchline in "Mallard Filmore" usually amounts to "liberals are stupid and I hate them." I mean, even "B.C.", when it gets all crazy and preachy, is a funnier "conservative" comic than "Mallard Filmore." "B.C." will point out the excesses of liberalism, or something like that, whereas Mallard Filmore just makes stuff up. There was one stip that was something like "A liberal's dilemma: they want to support their local, independent bookstore but can't pull themselves away from the lattes at Borders." I wish that I didn't understand this, as it's just so banal that it stuns me. I'm assuming that, as a liberal, I should be offended by this, but I'm only offended as a human being. I've never felt any moral qualms about shopping at a Borders instead of a local bookstore, as the selection is usualy quite different, with harder to find or used books only being available at the smaller places, and I don't drink lattes either. And I've never met a liberal that this would apply to either. In fact, I would imagine that any liberal that did support their local book stores and did enjoy lattes would probably buy them at some independent coffee house as well.

The most amazing thing, though, is that it seems to get less funny and make even less sense every day! I always think "man, nothing can be as skull-explodingly bad as today's comic" only to be proven wrong, usually within a week.

This is perhaps the longest post I've written in quite some time. I really could care less about this comic, and am really just curious as to what goes into the mind behind it. It's like this strange being from anothe planet, or something, to me. I'm more in awe of the existence of the comic than I am bothered by it. It's a sort of frustration at not being able to see how it is funny at all.

Does anyone else get "La Cucaracha" in their paper? I could handle the crappy racial and political commentary if it were funny, but it's not, it's stupid. I wish my paper carried the Boondocks instead.

I can't reconcile these statements.

Just try to think of it as "Pluggers" for a different audience and you'll do fine.
