No complaints, but who did Morrissey have to blow to get head liner status? What is this, 1994 all over again? I didn't even know he had a US distribution deal for his new album that was supposed to come out almost a year ago. Anyway, here's the line up so far...

Morrissey
String Cheese Incident
Sonic Youth
Flaming Lips
Modest Mouse
Polyphonic Spree

...uhh, well, at least there's no Metallica, I guess. It IS supposed to be a two day festival now, so I'm hoping they announce more bands. I was really hoping that Coachella wasn't gonna be the ONLY music fest worth going to this year.

Yippee. One band who was long gone when they did The Simpsons, and one guy who Beavis called out for rock-humping when grunge was still hot.

Next.

Looks like a long summer ahead. Guess who the curtain jerker is on "The Hard Rock Cafe presents the VH-1 Classic Summer Hits Tour"?

NELSON!

Styx. Peter Frampton. And...Nelson.

The Lips....The Spree...on the same F'n bill. Good god this is going to be beautiful. I don't care that the ghost of Morrisey will be there, or Sonic Youth with Jim "Benedict Arnold" O'Rourke, or that lots of dirty hippies will be caravaning with String Cheese. The Lips. The Spree. We can only pray to see some collaboration involving "Yoshimi" or "Waiting for Superman" with fricking 30 person background choir.

I hope they add more, but that line-up doesn't look too bad so far. A lot closer to being indy-rock than having fucking Metallica. (Who I like, but Metallica at Lollapalooza is like having Eminem headline Lilith Fair). Sonic Youth and Flaming Lips both put on amazing shows.

I don't think I would have paid a dime in 1990 (let alone in 2004) to see Morrissey when I was 15, acne-riddled and moodier than a stadium full of Philadelphia Eagles fans..in other words, I was in Morrissey's prime demographic and I hated The Smiths/the solo stuff THEN.

I desperately need to get a ticket to this. Just the Flaming Lips alone will make it worth the price. They put on what is, without a doubt, the best live show EVER.

Used to go to about 5 live shows a week. And the Lips were phenomenal when I saw 'em. I'm a sucker for great songs played beautifully, excellent use of film and lighting, and charismatic stage presence.

I now have to ask, have you ever actually been to a Flaming Lips show? Or are you bashing them because you don't like what you've heard of their recordings?

Say what you want about the guy, but Morrissey sure knows how to market himself. In May, he's scheduled to perform for a whole week on Conan O'Brian, and let's not forget he TRIPLED the ratings for Craig Kilbourn last year.

...yeah, I'll probably end up going.

I wonder if Morrissey will be one of the Flaming Lips mascots, if so what will he be... My money is on "Happy Cloud", well he wants to make it sad cloud but all of Flaming Lips mascots are happy.

I wish I had some witty comeback to this exchange, but I don't. You're both right on the mark about him...

On a side note, has anyone ran across this (ocweekly.com) before? A friend sent me the link to it and I couldn't stop laughing about it for weeks. My favorite part was this...

"Morrisseys macho, but in a different way," Snowsell says. "When you think of the archetypal North American male sex symbol, you think of rockabilly icons like Elvis Presley and James Dean. But hes taken this most masculine of identities and remade it as a fey, wimpy, cardigan-wearing, gladiola-loving singer. When you present that to Latinos, whose culture offers very rigid gender models, it appeals to them because he uses this to show through actions that there are other identity options available. Theres no right or wrong way, and people can choose for themselves. They can be tough and sensitive at the same time."

...there is not a 'macho' bone in that man's body, much less his vocabulary.

Not only is this a "mighty white" response, but it sounds like you completely missed the point of the article. Well, at least you got some yuks out of it.

Retrovertigo, I saw them, for free, back in about 98 in Virginia, and was thoroghly unimpressed. The songs were not THAT good, and the stage show was less than stellar. Then again, my first ever concert was PINK FLOYD Momentary Lapse of Reason tour in JFK Stadium in Philly complete with 120,00 fans, and all the video and other visuals typical of a Pink Floyd show. Sorta blew the bell curve for SHOWS.
