Longtime WWE developmental talent Nick Dinsmore began working under the ring name "Eugene" at the Raw house shows this weekend.

The idea behind the Eugene character is that of an over the top simpleton who loves professional wrestling. I was told the character would be similar in vein to Warren (Cameron Diaz's younger brother) in the feature film "There's Something About Mary."

As PWInsider.com reported exclusively last week in the Elite Newsletter, Dinsmore is slated to begin filming vignettes to introduce the character on TV shortly

*** i think it's great that Dinsmore is going to get a shot with what seems like it could be a cool gimmick. I know I've seen him on WWEE tv a couple time. (probably velocity) From what I hear he has been the best technical wrestler in OVW for a while.

And he would be forever associated with the Eugene gimmick, which on the one hand is great for name recognition, but terrible for his future prospects of ever being taken seriously as a professional wrestler.

I'd like to say it's about time they had a retarded fan to vicariously make fun of the wrestling viewership. Now all they need to do is use my narcoleptic gimmick and then they'll be out of ideas and have to go back to the top of the order.

If I were Dinsmore I wouldn't know what to think. He has worked so hard and so long to get to WWE and now he is saddled with this? I just hope he has made alternate career plans.

I can't help but think this gimmick is somewhat ill-conceieved. If they make him a simpleton/yokel/moron that's one thing. Making him full-bore mentally retarded, a la Warren from TSAM, is perhaps playing with fire in today's extremely sensitive society. Not that I have a problem with it personally; characters are characters and acting is acting.

But then, well, what the hell was George "The Animal" Steele? Wasn't he basically a big, hairy retard?

It's really no more offensive (or is it?) than exploiting anti-foreign sentiments for cheap heel-heat, something the WWE has always done. I think a moronic "wrestling-is-my-life" fanboy character would be hillarious. I can just see Dinsmore racing around backstage, asking everybody for their autograph, like if the Coach came by to interview him before a match, and he even asked for Coach's authograph, that would make me howl. Then he'll say, "Excuse me, Mr. Heindriech, can have your autograph?" Then he'll cripple Heindriech in a match, then he'll mark out over himself for winning. Pure gold.

Will it offend some people? Well, some people just sit around all day waiting to be offended by something. It makes them feel good about themselves. Whatever floats their boat, I say. Whether or not it's truly "offensive" in a general sense will depend on just how much they play up the "retard" angle. If they play it right, it could make him a kind of pathetic, underdog babyface kind of character. The kind of character the crowd will get behind because they'll feel a little protective of him because of his "condition". He'll just have to mark out all the time and be super excited about everything, and the crowd will love him, just love him, like a goofy little brother, oh yes they will.

I like Dinsmore, and I like that's he's getting his own character. It's better for him than making him the replacement Doink, like they did a while ago.

Well this would explain why he shaved the beard again (the only other time he shaved it was when he was Doink).

Is WWE trying to tell OVW something when the OVW champion is be "elevated" to playing a simpleton?

I mean if true, this will make for a great heel storyline in OVW between Dinsmore and the "Team Players" (a splinter group in OVW of WWE contractually signed workers), but I doubt they're doing this just so OVW can have a funny storyline.

So I take it I missed the news that McMahon rehired Vince Russo? That sounds like the worst gimmick since Beaver Cleavage.

Beat me to it, OFB. My first thoughts were also "The Second Coming of Beaver Cleavage".

I guess they're trying to recapture the magic that was CHAZ!

Maybe they'll have him carry around a picture of Jamison as his spiritual inspiration. This has played for comedy for 2 weeks and then buried written all over it.

Being a retard only works for big fat wrestlers. Think of all the big goofs wrestling has had:

George The Animal Steele
Norman the Lunatic / Bastin Booger
P.I.G. (aka Mideon)
Haystacks Calhoun
Golga/John Tenta
Kamala

But, if you weigh under 300 pounds, I dont see how you could pull it off. Isnt Dinsmore a scrawny little dude? He should be on Smackdown wrestling the likes of Paul London, Kidman, Ultimo, etc.

If he was really a true "wrestling-is-my-life" fan-boy, he'd mark out over crippling Heidenreich, then give himself a star rating.

Actually, that could be an interesting idea. A Smark gimmick. He could be like Dean Douglas, but instead of giving grades, he could stay backstage and give star ratings. He could go around butting into wrestler's conversations giving them hints and the like. He could meet the wrestlers as they come back through the curtain: "Well, Mr. Taker, I would be happy to give you five stars, but the psychology on the leg was a little off and you completely blew that superplex attempt..."

This would be awesome, and not just because Heidenreich would end up crippled. Some kind of a wrestling super-fan that watches all the tapes and considers himself an "expert" would have all kinds of potential for comedy. Imagine he's wrestling, like, Lance Storm on some RAW and he's all "Well, Lance Storm has never won a match when wrestling on the West Coast on the first Monday of the month. I can't lose!"

Will it offend some people? Well, some people just sit around all day waiting to be offended by something. It makes them feel good about themselves. Whatever floats their boat, I say. These last 3-4 sentences sound exactly like they're coming out of Vince's mouth. "He'll puke and the fans will love it! This will be great!" There is no way that wrestling fans will get behind a wrestling retard in the 21st century. Also, since Dinsmore is a technical specialist, how the hell will they explain how this idiot is able to pull off inside cradles, counter-holds, etc.? Rain Man?

I like Dinsmore, and I like that's he's getting his own character. It's better for him than making him the replacement Doink, like they did a while ago.

If Dinsmore is decent on the mic as well as good in the ring, then Doink could seriously be a killer gimmick as long as they play down the 'clown' aspect and play up the 'Pennywise/Joker' persona. Matt Bourne had the right edge to the character when it debuted, but then Doink became a jobber post-Wrestlemania IX. An evil clown is miles better than a wrestling retard.

Hell if you're going THAT route, why not hook him up with Terri and a fortune telling supercomputer?

Honestly, I don't really see the harm if they're just going to play this off for laughs on Heat or something. Sure it's mildly offensive and Dinsmore probably deserves better, but eh. I'm hoping he makes it to RAW though.

Besides, it's not like they're giving this gimmick to somebody like Eddie.

I've gotta admit you've convinced me, AssDroid. If the new character is like how you described it, it would be great.

Dinsmore IS good on the mic . . . if given something to do. As a straight, no-real-gimmick face he was very bland; make him a heel or give him something to do with his character and he lights up a bit.

Hope for the best for him whichever way this works.

You mean, besides killing the guy's career before it even starts? What exactly is the point of doing this gimmick? It sure as hell isn't going to make Vince money. It sure as hell isn't going to make him anything other than a low-card comedy/jobber guy. It seems like its only purpose is to give the writers a good laugh.

I can understand giving this gimmick to a big fat guy who's doomed to the midcard anyway or someone they have under contract that they have nothing else to do with, but Dinsmore's a young guy, he's got a decent look, and who knows where he might be 2 years from now if the WWE pushed him a better way rather than wasting him in a goofy undercard gimmick.

I've been high on the WWE product for a couple months now, but this just seems like pointless nonsense from a creative team that should know better. Goldust, Hurricane, and Stasiak all got the lame-ass gimmick treatment and look where they ended up. Seriously, send Grenier back to OVW and reunite Dinsmore and Conway. At least they'd have chemistry together.
