The man, the myth, the LEGEND that IS William Shatner returns to network TV. First, he was Captain Kirk in the 60's, then he starred in the fan favorite 80's action drama T.J. Hooker. Now ABC announced that this fall, he returns 2 decades later to another, hopefully long running show as a head lawyer in THE PRACTICE spinoff, which STILL has no working title yet.

On a sad note, Jerry Orbach announced it was retiring time for Det. Lennie Briscoe on LAW & ORDER. After 12 seasons, Jerry Orbach is calling it quits at the end of this season. Oddly enough, he is in talks to star in Dick Wolf's fourth 'L&O' series coming next season tittled LAW & ORDER: TRIAL BY JURY. Michael Moriarty is also in talks to be on the show, reprising his role as ex-assistant d.a. Ben Stone.

SPADER + SHATNER= RATINGS!

Man, Shatner was awesome on the Practice this past week. Can't wait for the spinoff, though I'll be sad to see the Practice go. It really rejuvenated itself with the arrival of Spader this season.

So, if Detective Lenny Briscoe is retiring, will Orbach's character on the new L&O show be a retired Lenny Briscoe? Or a new character? A new character would be so jarring in that setting. Not too long ago, I caught a very old L&O from the Paul Sorvino era. Orbach was played a defense lawyer on this episode. It was very strange.

And Moriarty is coming back? Man, after he flipped out a few years ago and moved to Canada and said he would never work in the USA again I THOUGHT HE WAS SERIOUS! But then again, maybe he wants to get his face back on US TV so he can run against Jesse Ventura for president in 2008. Check this out!

Moriarty is also getting ready to film a 4 or 6 hour miniseries for USA Network called THE 4400. It's a sci-fi drama about 4400 missing people, all reportedly abducted by aliens, showing up back on earth. The odd part of they were all taking from different time periods dating back to the stoneage. Very interesting...

Michael Moriarty also won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of James Dean's father in a TNT original movie about two years ago, I believe. I think he's coming back to earth....I mean, back to work full-time pretty soon. I, for one, would be rather excited, since he is a wonderful actor.

Oh as for William Shatner in the Practice spin-off...I'm there. "Denny Crane" was hilarious!

They need to stop making Law & Order series. Seriously. Not even the promise of both Orbach and Moriarty will get me to watch this new show (well, maybe the first couple of weeks...)

The original series is a shell of its former self because they stick to mostly 'ripped from the headlines' crap because SVU gets all the juicy stuff. Back in the glory years of L&O, it was interesting because you had totally different cases from week-to-week.

Criminal Intent isn't really a L&O show because it's a total star vehicle for Vincent D'Onofrio, and he's basically Holmes to Kathryn Erbe's Watson.

If Dick Wolf really wanted to pump his franchise, he'd...

a) cancel Criminal Intent
b) put D'Onofrio as Jesse Martin's new partner on the original series. Also, send over the Criminal Intent writers to the franchise show in order to freshen up the scripts.
c) leave SVU alone, since they're actually doing pretty well as it stands
d) FIRE Elisabeth Rohm as quickly as possible and hire someone that can actually act

Coming soon from NBC:

LAW AND ORDER: YOU'LL WATCH ANYTHING PRECEDED BY THOSE FIRST THREE WORDS AND A COLON!

Although I'll give Dick Wolf credit: in addition to a snazzy theme, he was the first person I know of to put Jill Hennessy on my TV screen. Mmmm...Jill Hennessy...

Lennie, we shall miss thee. *sniff* Orbach be the bomb-diggity, yo.

My Favorite LAW AND ORDER was the Simpsons one. Law and Order, Elevator Inspector Unit!

Anyhow, with Lenny retiring, I dont know if I would watch any more. To me, he IS the show.

Moriarty's an asshole, but he's a HUGE asshole. He came in to my workplace a couple times when I worked retail. He's mastered the art of "looming menacingly." He's like 6'6".

That said, apart from the intimidation factor he was apparently quite the wuss. A buddy of mine served him daily for months at a local watering hole and said for a big guy he was awfully prone to having his mouth get into disagreements that his wallet eventually had to settle.

Let's not talk about his "political machinations" when he was up here in Canadia.

The last thing I remember him in was "Along Came a Spider." Was he drunk in all his scenes in that movie or did it just appear that way?

In my mind, as good as he was on the original Law & Order, I can't see him recovering his career. Orbach will be excellent in anything he does; he's every bit the consummate acting professional that Moriarty and David "I act solely with my sunglasses" Caruso only wish they could be. Whether it'll be enough to hold my interest in a third L&O spinoff it remains to be seen.
