Got a medical question which I normally reserve for www.straightdope.com but I guess they starting charging for membership

Anyway, I was playin in a basketball game and my right pinky got jammed. Everyone who has played basketball has experienced this. However, this one was particularly bad. I thought it was broken, but I could move it alright.

So here's my question. You know that feeling of "pins and needles" when your arm falls asleep? Well whenever I touch the outside of my hand(Ring and Pinky finger and down), I get that feeling. Also, when I have my hand on my mouse for a long time(solitare), that part of my hand goes really numb.

Could I have really damaged a nerve by jamming my pinky against a basketball?

Guru, as a medic in the Navy for 13 years, I am slightly insulted! LOL!

Anyhow ShotGunShep, if you can tolerate it, try some Naprosyn or another over the counter anti inflammatory drug. There is probably swelling around one or more nerved running through the hand and up to the pinky. The swelling will put pressure on the nerve, and make the pins and needles feeling you are experiencing. DO NOT take more than the recommended dosage, and make sure to take with food or at least 2% milk, as NSADs (Non Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs) tend to be rough on the stomach. If you don't get relief, at least temporarily, within 3 to 4 days, seek REAL medical help. (I.E. Go get an Xray)

Sounds like the ulnar nerve. The inflammation from swelling that occurred due to the injury is compressing the nerve. The same thing can occur when working on the computer and the nerve is compressed by desk, mousepad, etc. when the pinkie side of the wrist is in that position for a prolonged period of time. See your family doctor/chiropractor for it to rule out anything more severe or long lasting.

I've only been a medic for ten years ;-) here in the trenches of central jersey...in addition to StaggerLee's comments, try some old fashioned ice or epson salt, eat an apple and get some rest.

That reminds me of a funny moment on the old sitcom Empty Nest. Where the lead is a Pediatrician and for one episode they gave him a medical radio talk show and every single call that came in he replied with the same answer "I suggest you consult your family physician/doctor"... I thought that was kind of funny a talk show with same suggestion or advice for the entire program.
