PEORIA, Ariz. -- Rey Ordonez has left the San Diego Padres, handing the starting shortstop job to Khalil Greene.

General manager Kevin Towers spoke to Ordonez's agent, Adam Katz, on Friday and said the 33-year-old Cuban player is not expected to return to the club because of issues related entirely to baseball. The Padres had granted Ordonez a temporary leave of absence Tuesday to fly to Florida to deal with family issues.

Ordonez was a no-stick chump, I'd rather give the kid a shot anyway. Judging from his spring, Greene would have gotten the starting job anyway. I've read speculation that Bochy announced the SS position as an open competition to keep Ordonez' head in the game, but apparently he saw the writing on the wall.

It wasn't so much that Bochy wanted to keep Ordonez's head in the game. The Padres wanted an experienced SS in case Greene wasn't ready. Obviously, Greene proved that he is ready, and Ordonez didn't want to continue playing for a spot that wasn't there.

It's been a strange spring for my Padres. Nevin hurt himself, again... Beck is out for "personal reasons"... and this Ordonez thing. With the season opener against the stinking Dodgers only a couple of weeks away, I hope this is the last of the strangeness.

Don't they still have Vazquez? I'm sure he can still fill in admirably for Greene if the kid isn't ready.

Yes, the Padres still have Ramon Vasquez. They are trying to turn him into a "supersub". Even played him at first for a couple of innings the other day, but they weren't going to use him as an everyday SS this season. It was going to be Greene or bust.

That's really too bad. I thought he was a pretty good player last season, although nothing special.

The guy that I miss out there is Donaldo Mendez. He can't hit (or he couldn't) but he was a defensive gem. I'm not sure where is now, though.

Mendez was a non-roster invitee to Pirates' spring training. I don't know where he might end up when the season starts, though.

I liked Mendez, too. He had a great glove. I thought he needed a little more time in the minors. I knew he was gone when the Padres had him start playing other positions. If he learns how to hit a little, he'll do a team a lot of good.

Remember, Guru, it could be a lot worse. Dare I say... (dare... dare!)... D'Angelo Jimenez?

D'Angelo Jimenez is no superstar and has a shaky-if-playable glove at short (which matters not as he plays second base now), but he's a hell of a lot better player than Donaldo Mendez, who is Augie Ojeda-esque in his complete disregard for the science of hitting a baseball and reaching base because of it. He's a fairly good fielder but "defensive gem" is probably pushing it.

As far as where he'll end up when the season starts, the minors. He'll be 26 in June and looks to serve only as a last-player-on-the-roster guy for a team with bad infield defense.

Regarding Ordonez's hitting, he always said he'd hit better if he didn't have to bat in front of the pitcher, and in his brief time with Tampa last year, he did that. It was an empty .300 to be sure, but just getting Ordonez's OBP above .300 was a miracle of sorts. Not that I'm trying to defend Ordonez, because he's a jerk and he sucks.

Yikes!

I have to admit, you made me worry I was thinking about the wrong guy... and I was.

I have apparently confused the few games I watched of Santiago Perez with Donaldo Mendez.

Now, Santiago has a crap fielding percentage, so I'm not sure why I thought he was so great, but I'm telling you - there were games where he looked like Ozzie Smith out there.

He appears to be out of the majors.
