Has anyone played the new Metal Gear for the GameCube yet? I never played the PS original, so I was quite interested in seeing what all the fuss was about ...

So far (I've just gotten to the tank driving boss - Raven, right?) I must say that it's quite the fun little game ... A little long on the cutscene cinematics (but I guess later sequels are even worse on this front), but just a gorgeous presentation overall.

One question, though (and I don't think this constitutes as a spoiler, so don't worry):

When you're supposed to contact Meryl over your ear-piece Codec thingie, the cut scene tells you to read her frequency off the back of "the package"; I put this in quotes because I've looked high and low and have yet to find "the package". I got so frustrated looking for the damn thing, then I eventually just started cycling through all the frequency numbers, hoping for the one in a million chance of actually landing on the right one ... Funny thing was, that's exactly what happened! I just went to a random number, then it seemed to automatically go forward a couple of ticks and "dialed" the correct frequency for me.

Barring an outstanding stroke of luck, the only explanation I can come up with is that you (or rather, Snake) automatically learns the frequency number once the cutscene ends, and it just automatically dials it for you once you log onto the Codec ... But somehow, that just doesn't seem right. So, could someone who's played the game before clue me in - is there actually a package somewhere that you're supposed to find and read?

I know for the PS version they had Meryl's codec number on the back of the game case. So you'd just get off there when the time was right.

Nope, that's what's supposed to happen. Once you learn a codec frequency for someone, it automatically appears in the list below the conversation windows so you don't have to keep scrolling through the frequency spectrum for the rest of the game.

At least that's what happened in MGS1.

Yup, it's on the back of the Twin Snakes case, as well. I thought it a bit odd, until I reached that point in the game, and had one of those "oh yeah, I forgot" moments.

So THAT'S what they mean when they say to look at the back of "the package"? Well, they certainly could have been a little clearer on that, couldn't they? Like, say "look at the back of the game box" or something like that?

And that STILL doesn't explain how I was able to find her codec number out of the blue ... Just dumb luck? I dunno.
