NOW all they need is someone who can throw the ball to Boston and Chambers.

==========
Deal for Boston is completed

BY ARMANDO SALGUERO

asalguero@herald.com

The trade sending David Boston from the San Diego Chargers to the Dolphins is complete pending a successful physical by the player, with the team landing the receiver it covets, the receiver reuniting with the position coach he loves and the Chargers picking up much of the tab.

The Dolphins, 25, who did not wish to comment according to a team spokesman, will send the Chargers a conditional sixth-round pick in 2005 and a player to be named, according to NFL sources. The pick will go to San Diego if Boston makes Miami's 53-man roster, which is almost a certainty.

Cornerback Jamar Fletcher, Miami's first-round pick in 2001, is among the players the Dolphins and Chargers have discussed including as the final piece of the deal. Fletcher has struggled throughout his tenure in Miami.

The agreement on compensation between the teams was only one of three agreements this deal required.

Boston, who was due $6.9 million in guaranteed money from the Chargers, reached a settlement with the team late Monday on how much of that money he will get.

The player who signed a seven-year, $47 million deal with the team last year before falling out of favor, is expected to collect nearly all of that money.

The Chargers will make those payments because, while the Dolphins were extremely interested in Boston, they had no interest in paying guaranteed salary off a contract they did not negotiate.

The Dolphins were also careful not to take over those guaranteed payments because Boston's career has been sometimes unpredictable, so much so that the Chargers were initially expected to release Boston this offseason after he spent only one season in San Diego.

TROUBLED SEASON

The Chargers will end up paying Boston approximately $12 million for one season. In that season, he was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team after, among other things, getting into an argument with a strength coach.

With the Chargers agreeing to pay Boston's guaranteed money, the Dolphins then needed to work out a new contract. Miami is expected to sign Boston to a six-year deal worth about $6.7 million per season. Boston will make about $24 million over the next four years, but much of that money is based on incentives.

Of the $7 million Boston is scheduled to make in 2004 and 2005, approximately $6 million is tied to incentives, such as him being active for each game.

The contract's signing and the introduction of Boston as Miami's biggest prize during the offseason could be done as early as today.

REJOINING SULLIVAN

By coming to the Dolphins, Boston will be reunited with receivers coach Jerry Sullivan. Sullivan was hired two months ago from the Arizona Cardinals where he served as offensive coordinator last season and receivers coach before that.

Sullivan coached Boston for two seasons in Arizona, including 2001 when Boston set a team record by gaining 1,598 yards on 98 catches. He also scored eight touchdowns that season.

The acquisition of Boston could reshape the focus of the rest of Miami's offseason. Initially, the team expected to invest its first-round pick on one of a deep pool of receivers coming out of the April college draft.

With Boston soon to be in the fold, the Dolphins could use their first-round pick on other pressing needs -- such as the offensive line.

Wow. Has anyone ever gone from a 7-year, $47-million contract signing to being traded for a 6th-round pick and a player to be named later in ONE YEAR? In any sport? It even took the Mariners TWO years to trade Jeff Cirillo.

I was kinda lukewarm about this announcement...on one hand, yes, David Boston can potentially be a focal point of the offense (assuming you have someone to THROW him the ball) and can go for 75/1200/10 even in an offense that's going to run the ball at least 325 times and since Boston's a good blocker for a WR he'll help that as well.

On the other hand, you have to hope he checks both his baggage and that chip on his shoulder at the door. Which is not a guarantee, particulary on a team where there isn't really anyone in particular who keeps the rest of the locker room in line, up to and including Wannstedt.

Boston will probably have a great season. At least, until Thanksgiving, when Wannstedt will usher in the yearly implosion by using him and Chambers both as decoys, while having a fullback be the primary pass receiving option. On the bright side, Wannstedt will be punished for his stupidity by having a two year contract extension provided to him after they miss the playoffs by 1 game.

What's REALLY sad is that I have no counter-argument for any of that.

Today, ESPN Radio's Dan LeBatard had on a newspaper writer from one of the Miami newspapers (Herald, perhaps?). They talked about how weird Boston is. He takes like 90 supplements in pill form a day, and get IVs full of magnesium and other stuff twice a week. Everybody seems to agree that Boston is more worried about being a perfect physical specimen than being a wide receiver. They also seem to think that he's a bit aloof and unfriendly. Of course, they thought that about Ricky Williams when he came to Miami, and, as far as I've heard, he's turned into a pretty normal, friendly, guy.

Man, are the Dolphins trying to compete with the 49ers and the Cardinals for who is going to suck the most next season? They sign Rams tackle who was a revolving door when he started, traded for Feeley, and now trade for Boston.

I hope Ricky is back on the meds because this would get me depressed.

Just wait until he sees the oxygen chamber at Zach Thomas' house...that's the moment where Boston goes COMPLETELY off the deep end with his regimen.
