From CNN.com

With John Kerry emerging as the likely Democratic presidential nominee, President Bush is targeting the four-term Massachusetts senator. "He's built up quite a record," Bush said of Kerry at a fund-raiser in Los Angeles. "In fact, Senator Kerry's been in Washington long enough to take both sides on just about every issue."

Is it just me, or does Bush fail miserably when he tries to be the quick, witty smart-ass type?? He's said way too many STUPID things for this to work on any level, in my opinion.

I would speculate that it works on *some* level...since he raised $800K in Los Angeles (says CNN (edition.cnn.com)) and that was only one of, what, THREE fundraising stops yesterday? (EDIT: He actually pulled in over $4M according to CBS (cbsnews.com))

Besides, is it really quick, witty and smartass...if it's TRUE? ;-)

It's politics! However, he would be well advised to let his minions shoot the jabs and at all costs appear above the fray and presidential.

Come on. You're usually so good. You know as well as I do that these rich Republicans were going to pony up the money regardless of how stupid OR brilliant Bush's remarks were yesterday. He IS there candidate, like it or not.

You: Is it just me, or does Bush fail miserably when he tries to be the quick, witty smart-ass type?? He's said way too many STUPID things for this to work on any level, in my opinion.

Me: Hey, here's a level where it works, wouldn't you say?

You: Well that doesn't count because...

No, no. It's more like this.

Me: Bush fails when trying to be witty.

You: No he doesn't because people gave him money at this place where he was trying to be witty just yesterday.

Me: They were going to give him the money regardless, so the "witty" part of your argument is faulty.

You: Nuh-uh.

Fine. Let's go back to http://www.cbsnews.com/ stories/2004/03/04/politics/ main603906.shtml ...

"He's spent two decades in Congress. He's built up quite a record," Bush said, drawing chuckles from 600 donors. "In fact, Senator Kerry has been in Washington long enough to take both sides on just about every issue."

CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller reports Mr. Bush drew laughs with that line, and went on to say that he believes his differences with Kerry on tax cuts, job creation, Iraq and other issues will give Americans a clear choice in November.
(emphasis added by me)

Shall we continue this pointless exercise?

OK. Let's see if I can get my semantics together enough for you.

Is it just me, or does Bush fail miserably when he tries to be the quick, witty smart-ass type?? He's said way too many STUPID things for this to work on any SIGNIFICANT level (one definition of significant level might be "something more than 600 donors who were already in his camp, ready to chuckle at the first attempt at humor or ready to clap for every attempt at valor"), in my opinion.

Well considering it was the start of what will be a major knock against his opponant for the rest of the year, was kinda funny though not haha so, and has gotten replayed on every news show since I'd say it worked pretty damn well.

I dunno, I laughed when I read it. It's probably been the first time I've laughed at something he's meant to be funny, and I voted for the guy.

I guess Bush could have said "Sorry about the dumb joke - John Kerry wouldn't have said those things in an effort to get you to donate. He would have taken the high road and just asked his wife for his weekly allowance".
