I think the Chargers would be making a huge mistake passing up Eli for Garcia. I really don't see them challenging next year no matter who they get in at QB so they'd be far better building for the future and taking a guy who could be good to great in a couple of years, rather than opting for an above average 30 something.
Of the teams with plenty of cap room and the need for a QB Dallas stand out to me as a possible destination, as does Jacksonville though they seem pretty keen on Leftwich. His availability makes poor old Kordell's future look all the bleaker though. | calvinh0560

I will always believe the Chargers made the right deal when passing on Vick for Tomlinson. You can find good QB's later on in the draft if you know what you are looking for and set up your offense around your QB. If you can get a stud Defensive Lineman I would take him. | Big Bad

An NFL contract is not guaranteed, so they usually make them long to prorate the signing bonus over the years of the contract for salary cap purposes. I'd be willing to bet that the Chargers could release Flutie by June 1 and not take a big cap hit. I'd expect them to do that if they take Manning.
Guru, do you really think Manning is the answer? It would seem to make some sense to think that if the Chargers traded down they could still get an impact guy at wide receiver to go with Boston and LT, and give Brees another go with more quality at the skill positions in 2004. Especially given the recent success of some QBs who were drafted in lower rounds, and the fact that Palmer and Carr (the last two #1 overall picks) got HUGE contracts and surely Manning will get a similar contract.
Of course, if you say Brees just sucks and HAS GOT TO GO, I'm not going to argue. | Guru Zim

I will forgive them if they pick him and screw it up, or he's not as good, because at least they are trying. It's not like we have a great QB right now in Brees. He's probably in the top half of QBs in the league - definitely not the worst, but no where near where I'm projecting Manning.
Sure, there are a lot of guys that are better than Brees. I guess I'm just not sure how many guys are better than E. Manning -- and I'm not willing to have the team pass because of Ryan Leaf.
I know Leaf is going to burn us a second time on this, and it frustrates me. We passed on Vick. That should atone the spirit of Leaf. Let's not miss on Manning. | edge2333a

But seriously, don't you agree those are pretty damn long odds? Peyton has set some BIG numbers up there that have never been achieved in the history of the league. I think Eli's going to end up being Ramon Martinez to Peyton's Pedro, a solid pro but one who ends up being fairly forgettable. | calvinh0560

I still think the best move for the Chargers would be to trade down and get some line help. This team is more than just a good QB away. You need to build for the long hall and that mean a core young Off and Def line
