McCaffrey had concussion-marred season

Associated Press
DENVER -- Denver Broncos receiver Ed McCaffrey retired Tuesday after a 13-year NFL career that included being one of John Elway's primary targets on two Super Bowl champions.

McCaffrey, 35, missed most of last season after two concussions in two weeks.

He broke his leg in the first game of 2001, but he returned the next season to catch 69 passes for 903 yards.

The Broncos told McCaffrey they wanted to cut his $4.5 million base salary for next season to help get under the salary cap.

The Broncos acquired McCaffrey from San Francisco in 1995 as an unrestricted free agent. He began his career with the New York Giants in 1991.

A starter on the Broncos' Super Bowl winners in 1998 and 1999, he also earned a Super Bowl ring with the 49ers in 1995.

My McCaffrey moment was September 10th, 2001. MNF; McCaffrey goes apeshit during the game, making great catch after great catch. However, he fractures or breaks his leg during the game.

My former boss and I were going to talk about that the next morning; however, that wasn't the first thing on our minds as we were in even deeper shock from the tragedy that happened.

Ed McCaffrey was tough and had great hands. He and Rod Smith complemented each other and made for a great receiving tandem. He's going to be missed.

Now I need to go get some of that Ed McCaffrey Peanut Butter.
