Robert Lang traded today to the Red Wings, in return for a first round pick, a fourth round pick, and a prospect.

Not too bad for the leading scorer in the league.

Thoughts?

Nice pick up for the Wings - it should also lay to rest any Messier/Lindros to the Wings rumors.

My Washington Caps are in full-on Fire Sale mode. The kid we got is a quick, skinny guy with lots of scoring ability but is still 2-3 years away from being able to cut it in the NHL, according to the scouting reports. More like 2-3 years and 50 pounds. Tomas Fleischmann(LW) is listed at 6' 165 lbs. I'm 5'6" and I weigh 160. This kid need to bulk the hell up and quick. It seems like the Caps now have something like 200 first round picks with all the unloading they are doing. They COULD be dangerous in 3 years if everything they hope for pays off. They could be abysmally bad if it doesn't.

Lang should fit well in Detroit. I hear that they like winning a lot or something. Lang's 33 and this'll probably be his pinnacle season. He's scoring a TON on a team that isn't winning. Now I'm saying this as a Capital's FAN, but it was best to move him somewhere where he can be useful on a team that can justify his $5 million price tag with wins. Now that all of our offense has been dumped I'm looking forward to the team unloading Kolzig and Gonchar and just getting it over with.

It's a decent pickup but I suspect that once the playoffs roll around people will be saying, Robert who?

I think Lang will turn out to be one of those guys who was great on a shitty team because nobody gets up to play the Washington Capitals and will be mediocre on the Wings because teams actually try against them. :)

I agree. It's a nice pickup, but Lang will be expected to be more of a role player than a big scorer. Not to say that he won't score a lot, but with Datsyuk, Draper and Zetterberg having fabulous years and the usual cast of all-stars still playing solidly, I don't think Lang will be used nearly as much as he was in Washington.

What we need now is a couple of defensemen. With Wooley and Chelios hurting and Hatcher not back yet, the Wings need to shore up the blue line.

In a related story, the Caps will now trade places with their AHL affiliate in Portland...

They're pretty much the same team at this point anyway. What's the use?

Yeah, I figured the same thing. In Washington, there was nobody else. In Detroit, you'd think Lang would be fighting with any number of other guys for ice time, not to mention power play time. Then what happens? He picks up three points in his first game. Go figure.

I'm surprised as well. However, he made the most of his time because he still got about 5:30 of ice time less than what he was averaging with the Caps.

You won't hear me complaining though...
