The question is for those of you who see no viable candidate on the other side, who would you accept from that party? No bashing of the current candidates but say you are AWA or Grimis and not thrilled with the Dem.'s, who from the Dem's would be acceptable and vice versa for you Dem's out there. Joe Lieberman. He's pro-death, but not stupidly so (he supports a viability law, for example). Voted for the GOP tax cut. Didn't vote for the balanced budget thing. He voted for Iraq and for Iraq reconstruction. Says good thing about the Military. Against gun control. For a one-time legalization of illegal immigrants. Has voted against a BUNCH of welfare increases and for a bunch of welfare reforms.

And I am not sure Zell Miller counts as a Democrat anymore - especially considering he has endorsed Bush.

As far as the dems running.. Lieberman was and is, a tool. Clark was my hope, but he just couldn't keep his mouth shut long enough to not be branded an idiot. (I don't think he is an idiot, just that he wasn't prepared for the politics involved) Dean was a surefire loser. No questions asked. His one issue was Iraq, lots of people mad about Iraq. But when it comes down to it, it won't get you elected. Kucinich is the most principaled of all of them, and the one with the most ideas for the future. Which is why he is pulling 1% everywhere. Edwards is probably as good a choice as any of them, as far as electability, but he is missing something. I think he will be a player in presidential politics in the future. ANd John Kerry. John Kerry is the most Status Quo politician of this bunch not named George Bush. His voting record is clean, the guy has for the most part avoided any real hypocricy with his votes. His Vietnam service and then protest is enviable. I think most of the people who are vehemently antiwar have seen what war is. I think most hawks, in large, have not seen war, especially in these days and ages when there haven't been any really huge body counts with any of our conflicts.
If I had to pick someone who I wanted to run. Joe Biden. I think he could probably pick up some reagan democrats. He's well spoken, has a warm personality, and tends to vote his conscience, which is a good thing. He also seems principaled | vsp

I honestly don't mean this as an insult or zinger, but this does even more to reinforce my refusal to vote for Lieberman for _anything_.
I'm not entirely sold on McCain, but I'd take him in a heartbeat over Bush. I'm having trouble thinking up Republicans that I'd trust with the Presidency, but then again, I'm having trouble picturing most Democrats in that position...

We had to choose someone from the other side. I didn't say I would vote for him, but that I could. Let's say it was the fall election and by some weirdness it was Kerry Vs Lieberman - I vote for Joe. Kerry Vs. Kucinich, I stay home or write in Condie Rice. | Grimis

Bingo. Besides, when it comes to personal liberties I would trust Kerry less since he wants to sign everything over to the UN and Edwards less since he is a trial lawyer... | samoflange

However, I'm closer to Democrat (aside from Independant), and there my vote would go to Dean, if he's still in the race when the time comes, otherwise Kerry has it. But overall, Dean is my top choice (the scream put him over for me;D) In the '00 election, on the other hand, I was impressed with Nader. If he could run this time without endangering the Democratic votes (like he did last time) he'd be my third pick.

| #20 Posted on 29.2.04 1039.59 Reposted on: 1.3.11 0000.20 | You know, I would have an easier time pulling the lever for Edwards than Kerry. I keep hearing that the support for Kerry is because he's electable. But personally, I think Edwards matches up better against Bush than Kerry does. Remember, the November election won't swing on loyal Republican and Democratic voters, it will swing on independents and disgruntled party members who may be willing to switch for an election. I think a lot of these votes swing on intangibles. Edwards is a great speaker, and seems to be just a good guy. Kerry on the other hand seems smug, smarmy, and just arrogant.
See, in Tennessee, I see Kerry as having no shot carrying the state. Edwards, on the other hand, I could see mounting a challenge. (Yes, Kerry did beat Edwards in the primary here, but so few people vote in the primary, and I'm sure were just the hardcore Dems, I don't think that's a true reflection of how things would go in a general election i.e. if the vote had been Kerry vs. Edwards, winner goes to the White House, I'm sure Edwards would win) You could say that TN is not all that important, but given what happened last time, and I suspect the vote will be close again, EVERY state matters. That said, this opinion may carry a regional bias. Obviously Kerry DOES get elected in Massachusetts. And given some of the others that either get elected or trumped up in some other way, I think what may play as cocky here just plays as confidence there. So I can see that this may just be a matter of perspective, and maybe if you did a state-by-state breakdown, Kerry really does have the best shot. |
