MOTION PICTURE
LEADING MALE: Johnny Depp [Pirats of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl]
LEADING FEMALE: Charlize Theron [Monster]
SUPPORTING MALE: Tim Robbins [Mystic River]
SUPPORTING FEMALE: Renee Zellweger [Cold Mountain]
ENSEMBLE: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

TELEVISION
MALE IN MINI/TVM: Al Pacino [Angels in America]
FEMALE IN MINI/TVM: Meryl Streep [Angels in America]
MALE IN DRAMA: Kiefer Sutherland [24]
FEMALE IN DRAMA: Frances Conroy [Six Feet Under]
MALE IN COMEDY: Tony Shaloub [Monk]
FEMALE IN COMEDY: Megan Mullally [Will & Grace]
ENSEMBLE DRAMA: Six Feet Under
ENSEMBLE COMEDY: Sex and the City

Thoughts: Well, Depp's win really cements that anybody has a shot in the Actor Oscar race...except maybe for Depp. I can't see him winning. It's between Murray & Penn, and Penn has the juicier role so I would've expected the SAG to honor him...but they didn't. So...I haven't the foggiest who'll win. Theron is a lock. Zellweger is a lock. Robbins is a near-lock.

And once again, Jerry Orbach speaks the truth. During the pre-show (well, an ad during Law & Order), he called the cast the Susan Lucci of the SAG's. And looks like they went away empty-handed, right?

Doesn't Sean Penn usually never show up for awards like the Golden Globes a few weeks ago? I thought it was pretty funny that he showed up and didn't win, instead Depp won and he didn't show up.

Yep. And that bums me out and slightly annoys me. But you know what's a lot scarier?--Orbach's a two-time Tony Award winner who got his start in musicals. Can you imagine Lennie Briscoe singing and dancing? I can, and it's the most bizarre mental image I've ever had.

How about Vern Schillinger as the voice of the yellow M&M? He's got musical experience, too.

Does anyone get the impression that these awards shows are absolutely meaningless? Only the big-budget movies ever get nominated, and even when they throw the occasional bone to something that didn't cost 80 million dollars to make it never wins. I look at all these shows as nothing more than a marketing ploy, a way to help get more people out to more of these huge blockbusters so the rich can get richer and poor can get poorer.

Sorry, HMD, but that's just not true in any sense of the word whatsoever. The "big budget movies", ie. $80mil+ as you said, rarely ever get any awards-love, and oftentimes it is the most deserving who are honored. How many cinemas has Monsterplayed in, for example? I can't see any basis whatsoever for that statement.

Totally disagree, usually it is some big budget POS that gets all the nominations and awards (I was shocked they didnt jump all over Dances w/Swords)...this was the first year that I have seen a lot of small independents get all the love...they really deserve all of it this year, most of the good movies were small indie stuff (Lost in Translation, Thirteen, Monster, Whale Rider, Swimming Pool, 21 Grams, Girl w/ the Pearl Earring (and not sure if it counts here but Mystic River)...the only big budget movie that came out last year that sticks out in my mind was Pirates (which Depp totally deserved an Oscar for)

Independent doesn't automatically=quality. To say that its always "big budget POS" that get the awards is just crap! The Pianist won three majors at last years' Oscars (adapted screenplay, actor, director), and the original screenplay award went to Pedro Freakin' Almodovar! Adaptation was nominated in three of the four actinc ategories, and Chris Cooper won Best Supporting! The year before, Halle Berry and Jim Broadbent both won awards for indy films, and the year before that both Soderbergh and Benicio del Toro won in their categories for Traffic! AND Marcia Gay Harden won for the Ed-Harris-financed Pollock! Hilary Swnak for Boys Don't Cry, Angelina Jolie for Girl, Interrupted, Roberto Benigni for Life Is Beautiful, James Coburn for Affliction, Goeffrey Rush for Shine, Frances McDormand and the Coens for Fargo, Nic Cage for Leaving Las Vegas, Mira Sorvino for Mighty Afrodite, Kevin Spacey for The Usual Suspects....do need to go even furthe rback into the records, or is my point made?

Actually, one reason I occasionally watch "Law & Order" is that I saw Jerry Orbach as Billy Flynn in the touring production of "Chicago" almost 30 years ago, and he ROCKED. The truly uncanny thing is that he looks exactly the same as he did in the '70s.

I never said that indie ALWAYS means quality, but usually, on the whole, the actors don't "phone it in" as much as they do in the big budget movies...thats just my opinion, usually they are better written and are just usually a better package

Are you telling me that Dances w/Swords, Cold Mtn are great movies?!?! Troy looks to be a blah movie also

Cold Mountain's a great movie, mainly because it dares to go in a slightly different direction with regards to wartime loss in the final half hour. Plus its gorgeously-shot, its got a great supporting cast and Minghella never misses a beat in terms of direction. The two leads are Hella bland, fair enough. The Last Samurai was a typical Hollywood epic, but Watanabe was absofuckinglutely awesome and it entertained me for a coupla hours. Are they world-beaters? No. But neither is exactly a piece of shit.

Ok, this year you've got a point. But the Godfather? Chariots of Fire? Terms of Endearment? Platoon? Rain Man? Silence of the Lambs? Unforgiven? Forrest Gump? TITANIC?
Sure lots of these were good films, but you can't tell me there wasn't a lot of money invested in them. I'm not necessarily referring to budget size either, just that the academy often selects who is "due" as apposed to who was just the best that year. Take Denzel's Oscar. Was that really for Training Day, or was it to offset the fact that he should have got it at least a couple times before that?

Good points, and when it comes to the Best Picture Oscar I can somewhat see where you're coming from. But its not usually just a case of "which film needs a boost at the box office?" (although I have to admit that's the only reaosn I can see for Chicago winning last year). There's al sorts of things attached to it, and generally I tihnk the Academy do a half-decent job of giving awards to those who deserve them.

Also, Denzel won mainly due to a)Crowe blowing his big opportunity by being a total moron at the BAFTAs, which rubbed a lot of LA types the wrong way, and b)The Academy not wanting to give the award to the most deserving man, Will Smith, due to his entire career up til that point being based around broad comedy.

I was blown away a few months ago when I was watching an A&E Biography of Orbach, and found out that he was the voice of the French candleabra in Beauty and the Beast!

And if Law & Order were to win any acting awards, the time would have been at any point between seasons 1 through 8. On the other hand, it's tough to act well if your writers just aren't pulling their weight.
