I posted this in another thread but thought I'd make a new thread for those that didnt check the other thread out.

I keep up with the ratings for all the networks as much as I can by just reading the Life section of the USA Today every wednesday. They recently changed the way they present the ratings and added a Top 15 cable ratings section as well. For the longest time they gave ratings, viewers (in millions) and rankings. The rankings were by the rating.
They now just give viewers (in millions) and rarankings by the amount of viewers. This new presentation is much easier to follow.
Anyways, I found it interesting that the Feb. 9th RAW drew 4.5 million viewers and was ranked 7th for the cable ratings. The Feb. 12th Smackdowm drew 5.5 million viewers and was ranked 84th for the broadcast network ratings.
This info makes it seem as if it's a lot easier to draw viewers on broadcast networks. I'm sure WWE wants to draw equal amounts of people for each brand so they can maximize their house show tickets sales, their PPV buys and merchandise sales. Thus it's easy to conculde more big names are needed to carry the RAW brand.

I believe more people get Smackdown then RAW.

I believe RAW has more "superstars" then Smackdown to begin with anyway.

RAW also has the women's division for those that like to, quoting Rassmussen, "toast their loads".

For more info, pick up some Wrestling Observers as Meltzer gets way into ratings and buy-rates, shit I never fully understand.

Yeah...since UPN is a broadcast network, I think more people get that than say Spike TV. That's the reason I think the ratings are different.

On a somewhat related note, I wonder how many people watch ONLY RAW or Smackdown!, one and not the other. And for the ones who do, how many are forced to (don't get the other network perhaps), and how many choose to only watch one brand?

Im one of the people who only watch Raw. This may be because at home we do not get UPN and I never got into that habit even as I got here to school where I get it. Even when there wasnt the split and I watched both regularly I still missed Smackdown often yet never missed Raw. In fact I turned away from Smackdown this week as soon as Brock got in the ring for his speech. OH and I never watch Heat anymore on a side note.

I actually do not watch SD! because it is not live. I think it takes so much away from the program for some odd reason. I do read the recaps to keep up with it and will order the PPV's but I find myself unable to actually watch it weekly. I watch RAW weekly, though.

Before I got to college, I was this way too. I'd only occasionally watch Smackdown, and the only explanation that I can think of as to why I didn't watch it is because it wasn't live, and I could see the results ahead of time. That, or maybe I thought CSI was more important.

Why assume that star power is the answer? I'm afraid you can't figure out what is most needed just by comparing the show's ratings. A lot of factors are involved.

I get both shows, and I still watch RAW every week (barring a Green Bay appearance on Monday Night Football) and Smackdown only if Survivor is out of season or Friends is a rerun. It's just that Thursday is a far more competitive night for my personal tastes.

There was an interesting (I thought) fun factoid included in pwinsider's coverage of a WWE conference call -- Click Here (pwinsider.com):

Linda talked about the "Escape The Rules" marketing campaign for Raw, saying it was part of their continued efforts to help establish Raw and Smackdown (which gets "Smack Your TV" as their catchphrase) as separate brands. However, Linda said that 70% of the fans that watch Raw or Smackdown don't watch the other show, so they are looking at cross-brand promotions to help in getting fans to watch both programs.
I assumed there was some skew between the Raw & SD viewerships, but I never would have guessed it was anywhere near 70%.
