Associated Press
WASHINGTON -- Jacksonville quarterback Mark Brunell agreed to a seven-year, $43 million deal with the Washington Redskins late Thursday, clearing the way for a trade next month.

Brunell will receive an $8.6 million signing bonus, according to agent Leigh Steinberg, who wrapped up several weeks of negotiations with Redskins owner Dan Snyder.

Brunell is expected to displace Patrick Ramsey as the starter, giving Joe Gibbs the veteran he sought in the coach's first season back in Washington after an 11-year retirement.

"Mark and Joe Gibbs have been talking every day, sometimes multiple times," Steinberg said. "Mark's comfort level and excitement level with coach Gibbs has grown every day. He became convinced throughout the process that the ability to play for a Hall of Fame-caliber coach that had been to four Super Bowls was unique and too good to pass up."

The deal cannot become official until the offseason trading period begins March 3. The Redskins have offered the Jaguars a third-round draft pick for Brunell, according to a source familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity.

******

I'm not a real big fan of this move. The Redskins are overpaying to fill a position that (in my opinion) has already been filled. There are better ways to spend money. But hey, if the 'Skins make the playoffs, good for them.

Of course, the Jaguars still need to actually make the trade, but if they don't they owe Brunell a two million dollar roster bonus.

It would be interesting if Miami or Tampa Bay came up with a better offer and submarined the Skins. I HATE Washington, so I am hoping SOMEBODY gets Brunell just to mess them up. Then what is Ramsey going to do.

BTW, has any mention been made as to what they plan to do with Ramsey? Perhaps trade him to Arizona?

The Skins also have other concerns--such as resigning stud DB Champ Bailey. Not to mention having room to resign Smoot next year.

On defense, you either need a great rush to make up for average corners or great corners to make up for an average rush.

I'm sure Ramsey would do a fine job if the O-line kept him off the turf.

We're looking to trade Bailey for some draft picks, last I heard. It was either re-sign him or Arrington this year and we went with Arrington. Now, Bailey is asking for too much money, so we're looking to trade him. Detroit seems like they want him, so if we got their first round pick, we'd have #5 and #6 in the first round.

I've got to say I'm not keen on Brunell. It's like we'll be on borrowed time with him. Why not keep Ramsey, who has more than shown the caliber of player he is? He's tough, willing to take a hit, and is only going to get better. I hope Ramsey mops up in training camp and keeps the starting job.

It's a sad day for Jags fans, seeing perhpas the former face of the franchise leave. It's kinda bittersweet, because he wouldn't be playing if he stayed.

Seven-year contract? That seems a bit much for a 33 year-old with past injuries.

They "Franchised" him a few days ago.

WTTG Fox 5 just said that Ramsey and Brunell will have to fight it out in preseason and they interviewed some of the WRs and they said that all this has lit a fire under his ass so to speak. Like they say, competition is good for everyone.

I completely agree. Seven years is way too long of a contract for him. I would assume it's very "back loaded", with the majority of the salary during years 5-7.

C'mon, this is the NFL, there's no way that contract lasts longer than three years in its present form.

Geez, who's Brunell's agent, Scott Boras? *rimshot*

Yeah, I know it's Steinberg. Work with me here...

It's now being said that we will trade Champ to the Broncos for CLINTON FREAKING PORTIS. That'd be a pretty sweet deal for us, I'd think.

Speaking as a Bronco fan, I don't know how to feel about this. I'd hate to see Portis go, because 'backs like him don't come around often, and he's a lot of fun to watch. But we're in dire need of help on defense, and Champ could help us a lot.

Plus, it's been said that who-dat running backs often succeed in the Broncos' system, so perhaps Portis is expendable? Still sucks to see him go.

Denver also wants a 2nd roung pick, but from reading the espn article, there are contract issues that must be resolved with Bailey AND Portis first...

The thought of giving up Champ is a bittersweet one.

He is the Darrel Green of the 2000s as far as the skins are concerned, and we are giving him up for a SWEET back...

We need the Tailback, but do we HAVE to part with our best CB?

Last I checked, Champ didn't score 14 TDs like Clinton did...and we DO need that kind of runner, but if we just didn't piss off Davis, we wouldn't be in this bind.

Fucking Spurrier.

Man, just think if Spurrier didn't piss off Davis, and if Norv (or was it marty?) didn't get rid of Brad Johnson, the league would be a different place. The last 2 superbowls would be very, VERY, different.

Speaking as a Chiefs fan, I'm 100 percent in favor of this trade. I hope it gets done three weeks ago.

In retrospect this deal benefitted both teams. I will say that Champ ended up being the better player in the long run, but Portis ended up being a more than servicable running back for us for the last 7 years.

Does the Big Gold Belt come as part of the deal, or is it worth the ol' "player-to-be-named-later?"

Of course you'll get the belt, and the whining about his stats not being high enough. In Joe Gibb's locker room, he'd be a cancer. A typical Hurricane asshole cancer.

Looks like the Bailey/Portis swap is a done deal. All that's left are contract renegotiations.

Farewell Portis--I hardly knew ye. :`(

I'm not sad to see him go in the least bit, sorry. Brunell is definitely not what he used to be. While he may be currently better than Leftwich, ol' Lefty still has plenty of time to get better anyhoo, so Brunell may as well go somewhere he can start.

I guess the Broncos and "genius" coach Rat Shanahan think they can plug in anyone for an automatic 1,300 yards. I think this could be a mistake though. Plus, I've just franchised Portis in my fantasy league for next year and I'm concerned about him running behind a suspect OL in washington.
