William Petersen, star of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, has said that he will leave the series after fulfilling his contract obligations next season. Peterson, who has been critical of the show's producers and CBS for cloning the series, told Playboy magazine in its March issue: "I'll do CSI until I legally don't have to do it anymore, which I think is at the end of next year. Right now, that's as long as I can foresee doing this show." [CBS officials said Tuesday that his contract has another three seasons to run.] Reacting to CBS's recent announcement that it is planning a new series called CSI: New York, Petersen told Playboy: "Taking a blueprint of something that was organically conceived and trying to synthesize it is the difference between organic chicken and chicken jerky. There's nothing I can do about that. That's [CBS owner] Viacom, big American capitalism and ratings points."

Well fuck. He is a great actor and his character is just AWESOME. I love how they plant seeds about his character in season 1 and you didn't really get the full story until season 3.
I really hope he reconsiders. What would they do? Kill his character? Get him reassigned? Who would take over C.S.I.? Willows? Would Brass take over the position he had in the Pilot before Brown fucked up and let Gribbs get killed?
What about Sidel and her geek love affair with Gris?
I've never really been pissed about a cast change since Yar was killed off in ST:TNG, and that was like 17 years ago. Promote this thread! | | geemoney

I actually wanna see this Playboy more for Petersen's interview than the Sable/Torrie pics (okay...I already saw them online). Every interview I've read makes him seem very articulate and he has a strong opinion about things. Something tells me his CSI character and his real-life self aren't that different. | fuelinjected

Petersen Going MIA on "CSI"? Wed Feb 18, 8:45 PM ET By Kimberly Potts
CSI star William Petersen is mad as hell, and he's not going to take it any longer! Well, not any longer than he's contractually obligated to do so, that is.
But just how long he is, in fact, contractually obligated to do so seems to be a topic for debate, as the Emmy-, Golden Globe- and Screen Actors Guild-nominated star kicked off a brouhaha with a Playboy magazine interview that suggests his days on the hit CBS drama are numbered.
"We're just finishing our 81st episode. That's a lot. I'll do CSI until I legally don't have to do it anymore, which I think is at the end of next year. Right now, that's as long as I can foresee doing this show," Petersen says in Playboy's March issue.
The source of his rush to ankle the show? Ostensibly, it's his long-standing beef with CBS' decision to carve out its own little Law & Order-ish series dynasty by continuing to spin off CSI.
Though, given the fact that CBS says Petersen is actually contracted to do the show through the 2006-07 season, more cynical boob tube fans might wonder if the star is trying to pull down some more small-screen scratch with his comments about leaving the hit show, la the not too distant effort by Everybody Loves Raymond star Brad Garrett.
Following a big pay hike in fall 2002, Petersen currently makes about $5.75 million a season for producing and acting in CSI.
The Thursday night series, which is averaging 26.3 million viewers a week and is the highest rated drama on television this season (third overall, behind Fox's weekly duo of American Idol episodes), has already begat CSI: Miami, which, despite some critical drubbing, has managed to average 17.7 million viewers each and is the ninth most watched series on TV this season.
"And they're going to do another CSI next year," Petersen tells Playboy, referring to the CSI: New York spinoff CBS has in development for fall 2004. "Hey, they can do the show five nights a week with five different casts, but as long as they don't have my guys, they're not going to do it as well.
"CSI: Miami doesn't have our chemistry," sniffs Petersen, who landed at number eight on a recent Harris poll of American's favorite TV personalities. "Taking a blueprint of something that was organically conceived and trying to synthesize it is the difference between organic chicken and chicken jerky. There's nothing I can do about that. That's Viacom, big American capitalism and ratings points."
Actually, Petersen did suggest something he'd like to do to take a swipe at the men responsible for the spin-off mania when asked by Playboy interviewer Stephen Rebello who he'd most like to have as "guest corpses" on CSI.
"The big three would be [CBS chairman] Les Moonves, [Alliance Atlantis Entertainment Group CEO] Peter Sussman and [CSI producer] Jerry Bruckheimer, all of whom are getting filthy rich off this show," says Petersen, who, while a producer on CSI, apparently does not get a cut from the spinoffs.
"They should spend a day on the slab while we poke and prod them. You'd have to ask their wives if they'd be convincing as stiffs." | dunkndollaz

That said, CSI: Miami is a completely different show in tone & style. I like it though Horatio is a bit pompous at times. It only got better when they dumped Kim Delaney and beefed up Emily Proctor's character. CSI: New York is a show that I will be hard pressed to even consider watching. They needed a more exotic locale for a second spin-off. CSI: New Orleans would have been so much better.
Grissom is one of the best characters on TV. It will be a shame if CBS screws this one up. | evilwaldo

I learn a lot from him in terms of dealing with employees. He is a manager that I would love to work under, firm but fair. He expects a lot from his employees but stands behind his values.
It would be interesting from an office perspective what would happen if he left. Do you promote from within and have a mini-storyline of people trying for the position and office politics become involved or do they bring in a new character. I would prefer the promote from within and move lab tech David up to a CSI. There was some tension when Warrick was put in charge for that episode back in Season 1 or 2. | StaggerLee

That, and stop complaining about CBS making fortunes off shows, to me, 50,000 a year would be great money, and I would be more than happy with it! Ten times that much would be HEAVEN! | dunkndollaz

Feel the Jorga Fox love!!!
Last night's episode was one the best in a while. Gil hints at leaving. Sarah shows up to a morning job buzzed. Greg gets ripped at the job for not having his stuff in order. Catherine get nailed for using the lab for personal reasons. Nice way of setting the table for future episodes. | geemoney

He seems a natural fit for the role of Gil Grissom, and it seems his anger towards CBS is what's fueling his decision to leave when his contract is up. | CRZ

That's a pretty ignorant comparison. Unlike Shelley Long, Peterson did pretty well for himself in the movie biz BEFORE doing "CSI." Granted, "Manhunter" WAS almost twenty years ago... | Nate The Snake

Then again, who knows? Bruce Willis was just a moderately entertaining everyman when he left TV... now he's a filthy rich moderately entertaining everyman.
I'd certainly be interested to see what he does post-CSI. He doesn't fit the traditional leading man mold, and he's too good (not to mention well-known) to waste on small parts. | Ruby Trax

He's not big on the mainstream fame that "CSI" has brought him -- he doesn't do a lot of press and what little he's done usually covers how much he misses living in relative anonymity and doing theater. He's a big Chicago stage guy -- he cofounded the Remains Theatre in the late '70s and is quite a legend around town. At this point he's probably financially secure enough to walk away from Big TV Fame and do something that'll make him happy/happier without having to take crap parts in The Skulls II or anything to keep him going. Although I'd miss him dearly :'( | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
