from an official WB Press Release

A statement from The WB:
For the last seven years Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have been cornerstones of our network. The sum total of the work done on those shows has produced some of the proudest moments in our history. Like some of the great series that are leaving the air this year, including Frasier and Friends, the cast, crew, writers and producers of Angel deserve to be able to wrap up the series in a way befitting a classic television series and that is why we went to Joss to let him know that this would be the last year of the series on The WB. We have discussed continuing the Angel legacy with special movie events next year, which is still on the table. In a perfect world, all of these details would be completed before this information went to the press so that we could be definitive about the show's ongoing future. But in any case, we did not want to contemplate this being the last year of Angel without giving the show the option of crafting their own destiny for this character and for this series. David Boreanaz continues to be one of the finest, classiest and friendliest actors we have had the pleasure to work with and we hope that the relationship furthers from here. The same can be said for all the actors and producers on the show.

zap2it also has an article with quotes from David Greenwalt

HOW? WHY? WHAT THE HELL? The ratings and DVD sales are both doing well yet they can it? At least give it another season for everything to be wrapped up nicely (I mean the tv movie options sound nifty if they don't rush thru things). I mean we're what, nearly halfway through the season? Hopefully we'll hear something from Joss soon.

Maybe now he can work more on bringing "Firefly" to the big screen.

Smallville gets better ratings (if I recall) than it's follow-up show Angel, but Angel's ratings are still pretty damned respectable. I guess the WB is taking the hit and renewing Smallville for a full seven years and letting Angel play out the string.

Quite a few people on this board do actually, i'm sure more than the amount of people who care about you.

I don't have an article right in front of me at the moment but in report I read Joss and Co. were ready for the cancellation so they already had an ending planned out for this season if it were to come to that. That's why WB made the decision early enough to allow them to finish it properly.

This really sucks though. Smallville has been pretty mediocre lately and now Angel will be gone. I think the only tv show that I like that will be left is Alias.

i was joking...

I am looking at it from the actors prospective. They made a FOURTUNE on that show and its in syndication now.

Believe me, David is thrilled. Hes been doing this character for a long time now. He made a great living at it, got his own show, with a following, now he gets to end the series in a respectable way. He for sure wants nothing more than to move onto other things.

As a fan of the show, you should be happy you got to see your favorite show for this long.

In this day and age, its rare that a new show even gets to run half as long as Angel did. Buffy and Angel both had good runs. SERIOUS runs in terms of $$$.

Plus - they are talking about doing 3 Angel movies, so its not like you wont get more content out of them.

While I can repspect that you are disapointed that the show is finishing up, know that its part of the business.

No disrespect, and Im sorry if i did.

Boreanaz has never said anything about being tired of the character. He directed his first episode this year, and said he was ready for more. SMG may be an ingrate (everything she did after season 4 screamed it) but I wouldn't judge David like that without direct quotes or numerous reports of Diva-esque behavior.

Edlund, Minear, countless others involved with the show still like telling stories. If they didn't, the quality would've dropped faster than you can say West Wing.

For you to come in and say "Who cares?" and try to applogize by assuming the actors don't care is idiotic.
A)The actors have not said ANYTHING like that. None of them. I wouldn't say Marsters storming the Vatican at Whedon's request is entirely ubelievable to me.
B)If they didn't, they'd be sandbagging it. They're not. The acting is just as good as the writing.

Warner Brothers... fuck you. This show was one of the last old guard of Science Fiction/Fantasy left.

I could rant more, but I'll just stick with what I said when Firefly went to another dimension.

TV sucks for Sci-Fi fans and this is why.

So Firefly is probably dead. Haunted definitely is (you don't want me to get started on that, trust me). Do Over, a funny, witty, and quick paced look at second chances is going a whole season but may not get a second. The great black hope of the TV watching geek is Forrest Whitaker's Twilight Zone Remember when The X Files was in it's prime? When Hercules was going full blast and Xena was smart enough to keep its lesbian subtext tongue in cheek and not in your face annoying? When Adrian Paul cut off a different head every week? What happened?

So how de save Firefly? We can't. UPN wouldn't help. They cancelled Haunted, the (consistantly) darkest quality show since American Gothic (which Viacom also killed), they saved Roswell when half the cast didn't want to be there, the people of Viacom are not exactly intellectual giants. And before you tell me I have no right to judge them please watch and episode of "Girlfriends". Viacom killed WCW too. And Invader Zim. And put Rocket Power on the air. So basically, whatever type of nerd you are, Viacom has a FUCK YOU personalized with a smile. How swell.

Oh but Scifi series have a home on cable do they? WHERE? Lexx went because the guy who played Kai was tired of doing it. What HAVE we got left? Stargate? I'm sorry, I liked Sliders better before Macguyver took over. The Sci Fi Channel's turned 80% stupid these days anyway, cancelling Sliders (because Farscape was cheaper and almost as good in the ratings) and then nixing Farscape when Stargate did almost the same thing Farscape did to Sliders. Not to say that Slides didn't suck in the last season, but the Bellasaurus may be their only saving grace (if he can get Stockwell back and Bakula to make some cameos I'll be 100% happy). Oh, and remember when First Wave just kept GOING AND GOING but I-Man got nixed for no fucking reason? You don't? Lucky you. Black Scorpion gets 50+ episodes and what happened to The Chronicle? Let's move on.

The place on television for cult shows is quickly diminishing because Buffy and Angel can't last forever, Smallville is supposed to have a limited lifespan, and everything new and good has no chance. I like John Doe, but it wasn't as good as Firefly and...

Friday on Fox is the timeslot of death for new SF shows. Sliders, Dark Angel, etc all died before season 3 or 4. X Files survived by moving to the Married With Children timeslot. Star Trek will survive no matter how good or bad it is, it's Star Trek. Voyager ran for 7 seasons and I've seen better episodes of Space Cases.

And syndication? Forget that shit. A few years back we had Highlander and Forever Knight. What's on now? Andromeda. Please. I'd rather have more Cleopatra 2525.

The FREAKIN Bachelor draws ratings and genre TV is dying. Where does leave us in a few years? Screwed.

And if you watch Anna Nicole... please, please rot in hell.

War.

Update?

Smallville hasn't been mentioned with its three year plan since season 2.

John Doe is dead.

Whether Enterprise deserves to keep going is questionable, but it's on the chopping block.

Futurama is gone.

Mutant X has joined Anrdomeda in the pile of uninteresting crap that just won't leave. There's some other spaceship show in syndication, but it's so forgettable I saw the first 6 episodes and can't remember the title.

Angel is dead. TV is Whedon devoid.

Fanboys, we got two options. Get pissed, or say goodbye and pray for shows like Alias, Battlestar Galactica, and Dark Shadows.

Oh and a pre-emptive fuck you to Gellar for not being on Angel this year.

AngryJohnny, there's a working theory among angry Whedon fans that WB cancelled Angel because of Dark Shadows. They feel there's not enough room for 2 vampire shows. (Though, oddly enough, there used to be!) Joss even seemed nervous about it in this interview.

I'm just stunned and pissed right now.

Smallville's cast is signed on for another three years after this one, but the lifespan is pretty damned limited. I admit that I never watched Angel too regularly, but when I did tune it the show was pretty entertaining. Ah well. Another good show bites the dust.

I didnt say the actors dont care...Every single actor on that show is now without a steady paycheck, ofcourse they care...but for the lead in the series, its not going to be the end of the world for him by any stretch.

All of them are making BANK of syndication and ALL will be guaranteed at least another movie of the week out of it.

I was simply pointing out the upside to the downside.

There are obviously fans of this show, DIE HARDS. But like I said, this is the nature of the business. Politics in hollywood are WAAAAY worse than the politics of the boys in the back.

The show had a huge run, SMG is at fault for "moving on and not looking back", its a shame.

Angry Johnny, I had forgotten about American Gothic before I saw it mentioned in your post. Now that was a damn fine series that died before its time. I still want to know what that sheriff was up to. Buffy and Angel, on the other hand, had a pretty good run. I know Buffy has a lot of fans on this board, but I'm one of the people that thought the show really ran out of steam about three seasons before it died. And while I don't watch Angel, according to the press release it's at least going to have a chance to run a finale. I'm a fan of quality series, but I'm even more of a fan of quality series that tell a complete arc, and don't just end when they're cancelled.

Fuck off, Stu.

This sucks, but after the way that the show was nearly cancelled last year (or at least the way the show was discussed with respect to cancellation), I can't say this is a surprise. At least we do know about this ahead of time so that Joss can script a big bang ending.

That said, does anyone think a letter writing campaign can help? And I'm not talking e-mail or an online petition either. I mean a full fledged print it and sign it and pay .37 cents to mail it letter writing campaign? I know it saved Designing Women some odd years ago. Could it work here?

(probably not...)

Then again, WB let Buffy go after 5 seasons, only to be saved by UPN. Of course, after reading AngryJohnny's JKyle rant (does the font need to be so big?) that probably isn't the place to look... (Have any more rumours regarding the proposed Willow series appeared?)

Hell, as good as the show has been, none of the Buffy/Angel stuff has been as good as seasons 2-3 of Buffy. Maybe we should let Angel go while its still better than decent before we get a truly crappy season*. Better to go out somewhat strong...

*Of course, none of us fanboys would admit it was a crappy season. Ever.

Edit: And hot damn! From the zap2it article, they are saying next week's puppet episode was written and directed by BEN FUCKING EDLUND!!! That is going to RAWK!!!

Suck ass suck ass suck ASS. Where's the logic in this?

Oh well, one small positive. With Joss now freed-up from pretty much all of his commitments, maybe he cna finally get the Giles spin-off, Ripper, off the ground. It's been mooted for ages and was actually slated to premiere this fall, but hey shit happens. Come one Tony Head, SIGN ON!

I don't understand these posts. Just because YOU don't care about something doesn't mean you need to post and tell everyone else that YOU don't care. You can read the title. Just ignore the damn thread. If YOU don't care, then you're an ass for wasting the five minutes it took to read the thread and post a reply.

Of course I'm an ass for wasting two minutes or so replying to you, but oh well...

This sucks. It is one of the very few shows I bother to watch on TV anymore. Here is what I put in the WB feedback conference:

I can't believe you are canceling the only show worth watching on your network. You keep the rest of the tripe you call entertainment and cancel one of the best written shows on televesion. I suppose you need to keep going down your path of appealing to the lowest common denominator of society. Long live "The Surreal Life". It is too bad intelligent, thoughtful shows that have a story arc that goes beyond the attention span of a gnat are becoming few and far between. I can assure you that I will not be watching your network any longer, and will be watching to see what sponsors of your shows I can stop giving my business to.

To think they did this within 2 weeks of putting out a press release praising the show and noting it is it's 2nd highest rated show. Sound decision-making there.

I had started watching the show only this season in order to get my Buffyverse fix. I had never seen the show before but was won over before the first episode was over; the first ten minutes after the opening credits is one continuous shot. The Ben Edlund Halloween episode was funny without relying on geekcentric injokes, I thought. I'm not crazy about Spike's heavy presence because I think the character wore out his appeal awhile back. I realize I'm in the minority on this. 'Course I was happy to see Harmony again so my opinions are worth only that much.

I'm sad to see the show go but my eyes will be relieved to no longer watch what has to be the most dimly lit show in TV history.

I got an entertaining bonus year of Whedon after a rocky last season of Buffy. I ain't complaining. I'm also inclined to believe the lead actor will have no trouble getting film work.

I just wanted to respond in lieu of the fact that there certainly is a dearth of sci-fi on television.

I too, am a sci-fi TV fan, and it really is odd that there are few TV shows today that are even sci-fi, very few of which are actually any good at all.

BUT... fear not, fellow Wieners, because 2005 will be a monumental year for us sci-fi fans. Sure, all of us here in the United States won't get the chance to see it as it comes out of the gate right away (perhaps), but for all of you over in the UK, you will. And hopefully its return will bring about more quality sci-fi television.

What am I talking about?

DOCTOR WHO.

I'll hop on the "this stinks" bandwagon. I never watched either show much (this or Buffy), I didn't have the time.

Recently however I caught some Buffy in syndication (insomnia can be your friend sometimes ), so I thought I'd give Angel a try.

I was starting to get into, so it's kind of a bummer that it's going away.

As for some of the other shows mentioned already:

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA - I enjoyed the mini-series, is there anyword on this becoming a regular series?

DARK SHADOWS - That would be fantastic, but if it's the reason for Angel getting the ax, it better measure up.

DOCTOR WHO - This HAS to happen, and it HAS to be good. I cut my sci-fi teeth with the good Dr., Daleks, and the ever cheesy machine men.

Is there enough episodes of Angel for it to hit syndication? Has it already?
