TAMPA -- One of the few bright spots of the early Tampa Bay Buccaneers years may be coming home.

Doug Williams, who quarterbacked Tampa Bay to three playoff berths before bolting to the USFL in a salary dispute, has accepted an offer to return to the team in an executive personnel capacity, Thursday's Orlando Sentinel reports.

According to the report, the team confirmed that it will make a major front-office announcement on Thursday.

Williams, the head coach at Grambling for the past six years, joined the Bucs as a first-round pick in the 1978 draft and ultimately led the previously woeful franchise to the 1979 NFC title game, where the Bucs were beaten by the Los Angeles Rams, 9-0.

After leaving the NFL for the USFL following the 1982 season, Williams returned to the NFL in 1986 and eventually led the Washington Redskins to victory in Super Bowl XXII following the 1987 season. Williams tossed four touchdowns and was named the MVP in the 42-10 win over the Denver Broncos.
