Rue de Pussies - I wish I could have seen that...
After thinking for a minute, though, I suppose if foreign comic didn't understand American racial tensions and went to an ethnic part of the U.S. and started cracking jokes, I can see how people might get upset. But it still doesn't change the fact that he's a hand puppet.

Sandler was a little stiff, but Triumph was at the top of his game! Pounding away at a poodle in the middle of a french restaurant...funny stuff!
They should have had Stompin' Tom on every night, he's more over than Hogan in '87...
Tonight should be interesting with all of the "controversy" of the french bashing.
Eff the french.

Not to say he hasn't had some good material over the years, but stuff like the lame Canadian sit-com(?) Blackfly overshadow any positive contributions he's made. Also, he's (I believe) a Newfoundlander, and both the accent and the culture require some background to appreciate. | fuelinjected

| #27 Posted on 14.2.04 1700.47 Reposted on: 14.2.11 1700.52 | I love the irony of the French being offended by being called p*ssies and there first action is take the p*ssy way out by crying and whining. Gawd it's like the kid in school who doesn't want to be called a "Sissy Momma's boy" and his first response is to run to his mom and cry about what his classmates say. The reaction to it is more telling and reassuring stereotypes then anything a puppet dog can say... The second it happens I knew it was going to hit the fan, the edit the entire segment out of the repeat on a cable network the next day(such a Canadian thing to do) You can make fun of Newphies, mullet white trash Ontarians, frozen & isolated Winnipegers, hick Albertians and lazy pot smokin BC'ers. But god forbid you make fun of the french, it's a national incident then. I'm glad Conan and the dog did that, they bring in a comedian and get all sensitive when he dares comment on the absurdity of Quebec.
I like the CN Tower vs. Space Needle. Guys in oversized costumes is always good for a chuckle. Also enjoyed the Canadian Moment, I understood what they said, I think they did a good job if you don't know what their talking about to get some humor from it... One thing I did turn on was the crowd, first days I thought what a great hot crowd. But the constant yelling and shouting out gives such a B-city feel. I guess you have to expect with so many more people at the tapings then a usual TV taping that the ratio of idiots would be higher too but still annoying
Tuesday: The hockey skit was funny, liked the over size helmet. Mike Myers is very cool. Might have been funniest guest of the week. I love his story of going to school with Elton John's Significant other and meeting him at an Oscar party and his shock. And his Spock 5 dollar was funny but him playing hockey diagram on the back was even funnier... I never found Ron James to be funny, the crowd responded, but they were so hot they'd pop for anything. But I find him lazy. We have so many good young Canadian comedians and Ron James being the one they used was a downer.
Wednesday: Scott Thompson is the best, he's a real funny guy. The tour of the city was great, the empty outdoor ice rink. CNTower and SkyDome and of course Woody's bar which was recognized by the crowd with a pop, which made it even funnier. It's good to see Michael J Fox, I haven't seen him do many of these shows since his illness. He came off really well, even made fun of his own condition. He's always was a favorite of mine... The Moose Caller really shows why Conan is so good, he takes such a cheesy thing like this and makes us all laugh with the guy not at the guy like someone like Mike Bullard would do. But Conan couldn't save Nickleback, what a horrible song. I used to like them but they are starting to really suck now.
Thursday: Well talked about the Dog in Quebec segment already. Adam Sandler was the only American and the only one shilling a movie LoL... Stompin Tom seems to be having more fun then anyone performing in front of such a young and youthful crowd all standing and clapping along with him.
Friday: As for the skit, compared to Triumph the night before and Scott Thompson on Tue. it would be impossible to top and it didn't. But still a funny effort. Jim Carrey, who I'm a big fan in the talk show circuit because he's usually so entertaining. He was good but not as great as I've seen him at times. I do like her knawling on the wooden table like a beaver... Eric McCormick said it all when he said "I have to follow Carrey" I thought he was funny but not much response as the crowd was spent. Except for loudmouths hollering stuff out. Barenaked Ladies, not really a fan of theirs but I they sounded like well Barenaked Ladies. | tsmstu

Carrey was trying sooo hard to get over. He needs to relax, he already IS over.
At one point he tried to get the whole crowd to chant CAN-A-DA with him, to no avail. He was funny though.
A good week overall with Conan in T.O.
As for Ron James, apparantly he is one of Mike Myers favorite guys, and that had a lot to do with his slot on the show.

on the front of the AOL homepage today there is a story about the Canadian government condeming Conan and his show calling it "racist filth"...I dont think its the Trimph thing that upset them the most. I think it was the Canadian Small talk moments skits that probably got them mad. Conan and Max were talking about Real politicians and real issues that were going on, and making a joke of it by pretending to care about what they were saying.
Political Humour isnt funny to Canadian politicians I guess.

Blame It on Conan
The Toronto businessman who spearheaded a drive to bring NBC's Conan O'Brien to Canada for a week of shows featuring Canadian-born talent has defended O'Brien against an avalanche of public outrage that ensued when Robert Smigel, in the guise of Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog, let loose with a series of barbs targeting French-speaking Quebecers. Peter Soumalias, founder of Canada's Walk of Fame told the Canadian Press wire service that he not only has no regrets about the bit but encouraged it. Soumalias said that some of O'Brien's writers did express concern about the material but that he assured them that Canada was mature enough to take it. As for protests by government figures about the skit, Soumalias said, "Government needs to stay out of the public airwaves. It's as simple as that."

The reaction wasn't only immature, it was embarassing. We're supposed to be able to laugh at ourselves. Maybe it needs to be equal-opportunity insulting, like the book How to Be A Canadian, which insults the inhabitants of each province equally. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
