I use to have Napster, but they charge now so I dumped them.

Everyone has told me to jump on this KAZAA.com for free music?

What other good sites are out there for downloading free music?

I used Napster too, and now I use WinMX (winmx.com) which is just as good for me...However, I mainly download popular music. I'm not really sure if it's got a lot of the "underground" stuff you may or may not be looking for.

Try BearShare. It's a Napster-like interface to the Gnutella community, allowing trades in music, videos, and pictures. The content depends on who's online. It does tend toward the popular titles of the day, but it's always good for something - I first saw "The Lord of the Rings" by downloading it as an AVI file from a BearShare member.

I swear by Audiogalaxy; it's kinda the exact opposite of what the other guys described, in that popular stuff is usually blocked by the copyright holder, but more obscure and indie stuff is there for the pickin'.

Take a look at www.audiogalaxy.com if you're interested.

Personally, I prefer Morpheus to Kazaa. I don't care for the spyware included in Kazaa since it and my computer do not get along at all. The selection on Morpheus is a bit limited since they lost fast track access through Kazaa, but I'll settle for a slightly more limited selection without having to worry about the blue screen o'death from software conflicts. The new Morpheus is using the Gnutella core with a proprietary front end and seems to be working fairly well. It is definately the fastest of the p2p programs that I have used. Hope this helps.

Plus if you're creative, and learn to misspell things, the popular stuff is there too!

I've never had any problems downloading something popular on Audio Galaxy. Sometimes I run across a song with the copyright symbol on it, but usually there's another version right under it that isn't copyrighted. Anyway, I'd recommend Audio Galaxy because after a year of using it I've always been able to find exactly what I was looking for.

Yeah, the new Morpheus sucks. Nothing downloads correctly for me, and if something actually DOES download, it goes at about 1-2K a second(on a fricking cable modem!)

And why the fuck did they get rid of the internal player? fucking idiots...

I use both Kazaa and Audio Galaxy. AG for more obsecure shit, like audio books of Anne Rice etc.. I don't care if Kazaa has spyware. Everyone is so scared of being recorded and watched. If they want to sell my animal porn veiwing to some reseach company then let 'em. It's all a big trade off. All the free movies and games I've downloaded pretty much secures my place in hell.

There's closing in on 500 users at Weinerville now. If all the other options fail, you could always try asking here for what you want, then someone might arrange an AIM chat with you and transfer it that way.

On the subject of quality rips, I find the combination of Audiograbber with the Fraunhoffer (possible spelling error there ) professional codec to be the best quality. Has anyone found anything else to be quicker/better?

I like my MusicMatch for rips, but really haven't tried anything else. I finally found my old walkman so i'm going to try and hook it up and get some of my bootlegged stuff in mp3 format and burn some CDs while watching the NCAA tourney next week.

On the misspelling for audiogalaxy, the copyright holders are getting more creative day by day on catching misspellings. I have run across a few (like maybe 5) that are pretty much undownloadable(?) unless you nail it right when someone has used another misspelling.

Edit: As an addition, I just got the newest version of Kazaa (1.51) and I can see an obvious and consistent difference in speed.

I used imesh for awhile, but think I got a virus thru some of the files I had gotten from there. The same thing just recently happened to my brother.

However, that was a great site for setting a billion things to download overnight and having most of them done the next morning.

I got winmx this weekend and have liked it so far, so thanks for the tip chuckc14
