The first thing I said when Carolina tied the game was, "De ja vu all over again." A little over a minute left and the Pats got the ball back at the 40, thanks to John Kasay doing his best Wade Richey impersonation on the kickoff. "Too much time," my friends and I said.
Then, on the 3rd and 3 at the 40, we all said, "Play man and maybe send a couple of guys." We figured it would be the right thing to do. Instead, the Panthers drop into a zone, and 15 yards later, the Pats have their game winner.
It was a damn good game to watch, and the football gods smiled. Ladies and gentlemen, the San Diego Chargers are on the clock.

Add a big old concrete-sweatsuited statue of Belichick to go up with the Brady and Vinatieri monuments.

The first 28 minutes of this game was just dull football, but that last 32 minutes was just gold. Carolina just kept hitting those big passes...Ty Law must've used up all his INTs in the Indy game.

A great win for the Patriots, though missing the playoffs next year would not be unexpected.

Some football games are more enjoyable to watch when you aren't greatly emotionally invested in who wins and you can just appreciate all the good football. This was one of them.

Now please calm down with your self-congratulating Tom Brady praise. If the first Patriots Super Bowl ring didn't convince anyone of how great a QB he is, then the second probably won't do much either. Let them go back to sulking their egos knowing that their local pantheon of football gods is really the best and that they just got screwed this year somehow and that next year will be better.

All that said, I'm happy the Patriots won. They are the better team. But judging by his performance, Delhomme's day will come. Give him time. I went into the game with a slight bias against the Panthers for taking out the Eagles, but at the end, I feel bad for them, because they are going to be so hard on themselves for losing the championship, when they played a hell of a game and deserve to be commended for it. Good job Panthers. Congratulations Patriots.

Ho-lee crap. Whatta game.

Attaboy, Pats. Delhomme made it close with those wide-open receivers near the end, but you pulled it out anyway. Way to go.

But look out for next year, when you face Favre one more time! (maybe)

Fun game to watch - can't believe Fox went for 2 at 21-16 - automatically and absolutely screwed me in all of my 100 square football pools.......barring injuries - the Pats will only get better - looks like the road to the Super Bowl in the AFC is going to be going through New England for the next few years

What a great game. As much as I hate the Pats, I give them full props for the win. And the Panthers deserve a lot of kudos too.

Never say die attitude for an entire team is hard to find in pro sports these days, but both of these teams had it yesterday.

It could have been so easy for either team to fold up many, many times yesterday, but they didn't.

First quarter it looked like it could be one of the most boring Superbowls in history with Carolina not having any yards to speak of and Pats kicker Vinanorward missing field goals left and right... The game really picked up in the second half

Panthers coach surprised me with some of his 2point decision. I agree with the announcers. I wouldn't go for 2 points until the final 3-minutes cause so much scoring could happen in the 12-minutes when he went for it that you might have needed that extra point to make the difference.

I wasnt as surprised by that (if they would have kicked the PAT they would have lost by 2 instead of 3) as I was when they played prevent when NE only needed about 10 yards to get into field goal range. It was almost like saying go ahead kick the winning field goal, we dont care. They should have jammed them at the line, and played a normal pass defense.

Being a fan of the Buffalo Bills (and rooting for the Colts to win these playoffs), I hate the Pats. But it was a tremendous game (except the 1st quarter but who cares). Congrats to Brady and his teammates.

I don't think Law was the cover on any of those big shots, that was Poole. I was really expecting to see Law pull off at least one INT, but the concensus talking to a couple friends of mine was that he and his assignments just sort of negated each other.

I was in 2 minds as to whether I could bear to watch the game after getting dumped by the Panthers, and up until about 3 minutes before half time I was thinknig I'd made the wrong decision.

But holy shit did it get good after that.

I really found myself wanting the Panthers to pull it off towards the end if only to shut up all the 'experts' who have been telling us how woeful the NFC is all year, but kudos to the Pats for getting it done.

I'm astounded at the ease with which both QB's (especially Delhomme) were able to throw at will but damn if it didn't make for some great entertainment.

Really though, had Carolina never SEEN play-action up close before? Even on 3rd and 1 at the end of the half when the Pats couldn't stop the clock they STILL bit on it. I mean damn, its only Smith and Faulk, let them have the freaking thing.

I'm not convinced that Kasey's kick off was the decider though. Sure it didn't help but Carloina hadnt been able to do anything to stop the Pats since the 2nd quarter and I've an inkling an extra 10 or 15 yards wouldnt have been that big a problem to overcome.

Oh, and Branch was absolutely robbed of the MVP, but I guess the winning QB gets the nod more often than not.

I am only going to say this once:

Good game, Pats.

And now, I hate you. Not because of the game. The Patriots came out and played one hell of a game. No, because of two people. The first was some random Pats fan who was watching the game down the hall from us in my girlfriend's dorm. She laughed at every single Carolina play that didn't result in a first down, "Ha ha ha!". I really wanted to punch her in the throat. But the real reason I hate the Pats? Bill Simmons. I normally love his columns, but man has he gotten on my nerves this past week. I really don't understand how any Boston sports fan could turn into such an arrogant prick, and it really makes me mad that his team walked away with the W. My only consolation is that everything in his analysis of the game turned out wrong (except for the win), but that's not very surprising as the man had obviously never watched any of the Carolina games this season. So fuck you Bill, and fuck your Patriots too. I hope your team doesn't win another post-season game for the next decade.

As for the game itself: Great game. Luckily for my heart, I've been watching Carolina play all season, so this 'Against All Odds, we Come from Behind!' schtick is kind of old hat to me. The Patriots should pay their O-Line millions of dollars in bonus money for managing to do what few teams could all season. What a bunch of no-name All-Stars. As for Carolina? Well, there's three plays that I'd really like to have back:

3) It's a Pass, you idiots: There's 23 seconds in the half. The Pats have no timeouts. It's third and one on the Carolina five. And our defense falls for the play action. Everybody from Trgovac on down should be ashamed of themselves.

2) This is a kick-off, not a punt: So confident in the Panthers defense, John Kasay says, "Those Patriots are pathetic. I'll spot 'em forty yards, and I bet they still don't make it!"

1) T is for Touchdown, not Timeout: Jake Delhomme throws to Ricky Proehl for 31 yards, and a first down at the New England 14. With a 1:43 to play in the game, somebody calls a timeout. Three plays later, Carolina ties the game with 1:08 remaining. If the Panthers had let the clock run, and THEN called the timeout, Tom Brady would've only had 45 seconds or so to get in field goal range.

All in all, it was a great Super Bowl. It ended on a down note, but who knows? Maybe Bill Simmons got mugged after leaving one of the Super Bowl parties last night.

Speaking as a Pats fan, having to listen to every so-called "expert" hyping up the Panthers over the pass 2 weeks, plus having to hear that 99% of the current and ex players who went to the game picking the Panthers, and having to listen to Sapp's comments over and over, his columns for me were a nice little balance. You knew he was a Boston homer from the get go so you shouldn't have been surprised.

And btw, nice game Garolina.

Brady's line 353 passing yards, he was 32 for 48 , threw 3TDs, 1INT, if those aren't great numbers in any game let alone the Super Bowl I'm begging you to tell me what are.

Excellent game. I totally agree that Carolina was pretty nuts in going for 2 - that really changed the game. Let's face it, your team is only scoring on the big play right now, you aren't really rushing well (except when New England was clearly thinking "Pass" all the way), let's go for 2! I also found it humorous that the Pats turned around and showed Carolina how to mix it up for a 2-point conversion. Thank goodness the Pats won!

That said, CLEVELAND 0-0

(edit - playoff final standings for the board? Santa Sangre? Anyone?)
