Hey all, I've been lurking for a long time. My best friend just woke me up an hour ago to test out his new site.(It's about 5 AM now.) I can't sleep, so I went to DL some files from one of my filesharing programs. Anyways, since I havent done this in a while, I never noticed that my DL speeds are about 1/10th of where they should be. This only occurs when I am connected to a router. I have one of them Linksys 4 port jobs. Any ideas? I tested my speed on Cnet.com and it is SLOW!! I have a cable connetion. My current bandwidth with the router is like 99.8 when it should be over 1500. Any advice would be appreciated. I am an observer more than a talker, which is why I havent written. I hope no one thinks I am just writing on the board for the free advice. I read here everyday, I just never write. Also I am deliriously over-tired, so that made no sense probably. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would try these easy steps...

First, try a different port on the router. Sometimes those things are tempermental.

Second, reboot the router. Make it reallocate its IPs.

Third, try differnt CAT5 Cables to the computer and also to the Cable Modem.

Of course check your connection speed after each step to see if it helped.

Also, how many computers are hooked up? Remember, it's a shared connection, if another computer on the network is devouring the bandwidth, then other computers will be left with nothing but scraps. If there are other computers hooked up, try turning them off and test your connection then.

That's all I'm good for. :D

Check with your host to see if there is anything going on. Perhaps if you fileshare a lot, you are hitting a soft cap in download speed.

Also, you may be limited by the bandwidth of the host on the other end - I may get 1.5M down, but since I get only 384K up people won't be able to do better than that if I'm the guy they're downloading from.

Also ALSO, you might want to try nailing down your Ethernet to 100/Full if it's set to autonegotiate.

Depends on what his router is capable of. Some of the first gen. DSL routers were only 10 base (with the assumption that no-one is getting more thanm 3-5 megabits/sec from a provider - although that kind of hoses LAN sharing).

You'd really need to provide a lot more information about your setup to get any better advice.

thanks guys.. I tried everything except nailing down the NIC card to 100 or 10 (if its an older model). I'll try that now and let you know. Its a linksys befsr41 router. I have 1 computer, and one X-box hooked in at this time with a plan of adding a second comp. If the bandwidth problem can be solved. I don't know whatother info would be helpful...

thanks alot (For the help!)
