I believe I heard news of DC Mayor Anthony Williams on the verge of his own Recall election. It was on a Fredericksburg station, 101.5, and didn't catch much. This goes out to all the Weiners in and around the beltway (Grimis I'd think would have all the lowdown if it were true); was I hearing things? Moreover, to everybody on the board, has there been anything nationwide in terms of other recall elections?

After all, how cool would it be if Arnold actually did spurn a Total Recall?

I read about this in the post last week.

He vows to crush the recall because "he is doing the people's will" by being voted in the office (only because he was the accountant that finally controlled the DC budget), but little does he realize that "the people's will" swings both ways. (Was he in a cave for that whole California thing????)

Here is the story from the Wash Times

And here is the website of the group trying to recall him.

It sounds like they have two major beefs with him:

- his decision to close DC General Hospital
- his support of School Vouchers.

I don't think this will get too far...

Grimis, do you know the stips dor a recall in D.C.? My problem with all this is a question; What do we elect pols to office for? I thought it was to consider the information and do what was right and necessary, not necessarily what people want. If that is what they have against him, I don't know how you could conduct a recall, even if the whole city signed the petition. This is really stupid even if it goes nowhere. How could anyone in their right mind run for anything if you can only do what the minions like.

Here's what I know. The group recalling him had to explain why in 200 words or less. Williams gets 200 words or less toreact to the statement. Then, they can gather petitions. I'm not teribly certain about any of the other requirements.

I was living in DC when he closed DC General. It was a very big deal (in local politics terms).

You have to understand DC politics. They're really weird (remember - this is the city that elected Marion Berry AFTER he got caught smoking crack). It's rooted in some very raw racial issues that both the white and black communities in DC (and all the various subsets thereof) have not made a good effort to try and reduce. This also gets further exacerbated by the Federal Governments role in DC politics and the racial issues on that level. This recall doesn't surprise me at all, and depending on the specific rules of the recall, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Williams get recalled, even though on the surface he seemed to be a popular mayor.
