What's up with all of the greatest hits cds that appeared around the holidays? I mean I can understand that they make good Christmas gifts, but the amount of new releases that were greatest hits was just ridiculous.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but here's a small list of cds I saw for the first time in Nov/Dec(or close to):

Counting Crows - Films About Ghosts, The Best Of
The Very Best of The Eagles
The Very Best of Sheryl Crow
In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003
Red Hot Chili Peppers Greatest Hits
Bob Seger Greatest Hits 2
No Doubt - The Singles 1992-2003
Michael Jackson - Number Ones
The Essential Bruce Springsteen
Stone Temple Pilots - Thank You

Ok, maybe that's not a whole lot, but I know there's been more. Comments?

Cash grab and most of those bands were due for another one, I guess. I mean, RHCP didn't have one for their Warner Bros. years (What Hits!? was EMI-only, save "Under the Bridge") which were a hell of a lot more successful, commercially. I can't explain the Michael Jackson one, though.

They do it every year?

Greatest Hits CDs I got for Christmas include:

Erasure
Human League
Dead or Alive
Underworld

I believe all of the above came out in 2003.

Not to mention the reissues (with bonus tracks!) - the Human League had four, the Cure had some, ZTT released or is releasing a slew (Ask me about the ACT box set sometime )and I believe even more are scheduled for 2004 - and let's not even get into all the SACD reissues...

Flock of Seagulls? Is that the same early 80's - guy looked like he cut his hair with a weed eater - Flock of Seagulls? I thought they only had two hits "I ran" & "Modern Love is Automatic"

The Eagles have to be the biggest musical whores ever outside of Kiss. They already have 2 greatest hits albums out.

Sometimes it has to do with the number of albums an artist has left to do on the recording contract ... if they just lack 1 or 2, why not slap the hits together with a couple of new tracks and ship them out at the holidays. It's all about the record labels making a buck.

I got the STP & Chili Peppers hits ... I must say the new tracks on the Peppers disc are pretty poor.

I thought "Whisper to a Scream" was their biggest "hit" ...until I looked it up and saw that that was actually the Icicle Works hit. Oops

I have a greatest hits compilation of theirs myself...

(image removed) Looks like this came out in the UK in 1986 and Jive got around to releasing it in 1991...

1. I Ran (4.55) 1982
2. Space Age Love Song (3.45) 1982
3. Telecommunication (2.29) 1982
4. The More You LIve, The More You Love (4.09) 1984
5. Nightmares (4.36) 1983
6. Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You) (5.30) 1983
7. (It's Not Me) Talking (5.00) 1983
8. Transfer Affection (5.20) 1983
9. Who's That Girl (She's Got It) (4.17) 1985
10. D.N.A. (2.30) 1982
11. Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You) Extended Version (9.08) 1983
12. The Story Of a Young Heart (6.07) 1984

More than you EVER wanted to know.
EDIT: I just put this CD on and iTunes says most of these songs are off by a few to many seconds - as if 4.55 wasn't long ENOUGH for a single, right? The extended version of "Wishing" comes out to 9.36 - YEAH!

That Springsteen 'Essential' CD is the bomb. How good is the Boss when he fills three discs with great music and there were STILL plenty of hits omitted?

Thanks, Chris, that is the exact CD that I just got in the mail on Tuesday. I saw A Flock of Seagulls at spring break in Daytona in 1983. It was during the day when they came out on the patio and nobody knew who they were but me and one of my friends, so we asked for their autographs and talked with them for a bit. All the other drunks at the pool were saying "Who are those pasty faced guys?" Mike Score was wearing a baseball hat so as not to give away his identity..

By the way, CRZ, I am looking for a reasonably priced greatest hits disc from Icicle Works and have struck out. Any help there?

The Essential Journey is worth having as well. You know, if like me, you sorts like Journey but can't really see yourself becoming a Neal Schon completist.

Why no Neal love? He's the best musician in the bunch!

Anyhow, The Eagles have two other greatest hits, because they had enough hits to fill two cds.

But, like poorlytoldjoke said, KISS has about 5 greatest hits cds out. Kiss Double Platinum, Kiss Smashes Trashes and Hits, You Wanted the Best You Got The Best, The Very Best of Kiss, the 20th Century Masters Collection, and TWO box sets.

It's actually pretty good. I had heard 4 or 5 of the songs previously, but "Fashion Fever" was really stupid. Maybe the Fashion Reporter can use it as his theme song.

By the by, I listened to the whole A Flock of Seagulls CD yesterday in the car. Why oh why is there an extended 9 plus minute version of Wishing? The regular cut is already 5:30. Three and half more minutes was a waster of space.

First off, Neal wasn't as easy to mock as SteeeeeeevePERRY! so therefore, no one bothers.

And we already know merch-wise, KISS is a band of money-grubbing whores, so that's not much of a surprise, now, is it?

You've got to be kidding. Three hits collections in thirty years is NOTHING. Take a look sometime at how many greatest hits albums The Who have out. Or look at Paul Simon, who seems to put out a new solo greatest hits after every new studio album, and throws in a Simon & Garfunkel hits collection every so often as well.

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot the worst offender of them all. The number of compilations of the hits of The Doors is staggering, especially considering they were only recording for, essentially, less than 5 years.

Oh, yes, and the first Eagles hits collection is only the greatest selling album of all time in the US, so thinking there'd be demand for a new one is hardly outlandish.

The Eagles' box set from a couple of years back covers everything for me. Nothing beats the "Hell Freezes Over" DVD, though. I think the only new thing on their latest Greatest Hits package is "Hole in the World", which is rather underwhelming. Bring back Felder!

I picked up the Essential Springsteen and Essential Johnny Cash in the fall. The 3rd Springsteen CD is rarities and never-before-released stuff, but the sound quality on some of the live recordings is piss poor. The Essential Johnny Cash is recommended for a nice long drive. I'd still like to get that posthumous box set from the American Recording Sessions.

edit: I bought the Sheryl Crow Greatest Hits for the bonus DVD of the videos. I watched "Soak up the Sun" until I started going mental. Her cover of "First Cut is the Deepest" really is great-she brings out the longing in that song.

My friend Joe went over to Vietnam to get married last month and he brought back all these really great DVD/VCD greatest hits comps, one was a best of Human League that has about 30 videos and live performances. I'd totally forgotten they did the theme song for Electric Dreams.

He says these all cost him about $2 each.

I saw the video for this on VH1 Classic yesterday and they attributed it to just Phil Oakley, not Human League. It was kind of weird seeing Oakley with really long scraggly hair.
