I'm not a big football game fan, and I was looking for another game then Madden (wanted to try from my Football game expierances another game) and I'm happy I found ESPN Football.

Main thing I like (besides extensive gameplay) is the crib feature.

Any other ESPN players out there with opinions?

ESPN football is the 2004 version of the Sega 2k series, right? I liked 2k3 a lot... how is the new one? I already have Madden on my PC so I'm thinking about picking up something different for a console.

I have both Madden and ESPN NFL Football, and I'm getting ready to pick up ESPN again. It's hard to play both games concurrently, since the controls are so different. But having logged substantial time with both, let me provide a quick review:

ESPN NFL Football is a big improvement over last years game (which wasn't too shabby to begin with), and is the first Sega Sports game that could really compete with the Madden behemoth. I might even go a step further and say that it's better than Madden, on the XBox at least.

Graphics/Presentation: Absolutely amazing. From the minute this game starts up, it blows Madden out of the water. From the Chris Berman pregame show, through the NFL Primetime highlights, once could be easily confused into thinking that this was an actual ESPN broadcast, and I've NEVER been able to say that about a video sports game. I also like how Sega Sports uses voice actors instead of actual announcers, as the actors can record many more hours of dialogue in comparison to, say, Madden and Michaels. There are VERY few instances where the dialogue repeats itself.

Gameplay: Sometimes, it's the little things that make a difference. And ESPN NFL Football gets some of the little things right. For example, in Madden, to scramble with your quarterback, you have to tap "Y" to toggle off your passing icons, then tap "Y" again to pull toggle them back on. In the heat of the game, I've scrambled, found an open receiver, then found myself spinning wildly toward the sideline because I forgot to toggle my passing icons back on. Compare that with ESPN, where a simple pull of the left trigger makes your QB tuck the ball and run. Simply let go of the trigger to pull the icons back up. It's a easy way to carve up a defense, especially with a nimble quarterback.

While the game doesn't offer Madden's much-ballyhooed "Playmaker" feature (which I quickly forgot about when playing the game), it's much easier to make reads at the line of scrimmage and change the play accordingly. You'll be shocked the first time you send a man in motion, and you can actually READ what the defense is going to do.

First Person Football: The big new feature this year is the First Person Football feature. And it's not bad for a first effort. I half expected the game to control like a FPS, and it does somewhat, as the left thumbstick controls your player, and the right thumbstick looks around. Unfortunately, the rest of the controls are the same as in the regular game, which makes the player harder to control. To it's benefit, the feature takes full advantage of the Dolby Digital setup, as you can "feel" the pressure by the sound coming from your surround speakers. It's a subtle thing that makes a world of difference. While I couldn't play a whole season like this, it's fun every now and then.

Extras: The Crib, in my opinion, is much better than the Madden Cards, and it actually provides some replay value. At first glance, collecting bobbleheads and posters for your crib doesn't seem that fun, but there's two things that make The Crib worth the purchase alone: the paper football game (which is more fun than it has any right to be), and the thing that has made me happier than any game last year: unlockable SportsCenter commercials. Yeah, you can unlock other videos, such as the making of last year's commercials and such, but being able to unlock those classic commercials makes this whole thing worthwhile.

I've finished a season in Madden, and the Owner mode isn't really all the great in retrospect. One can only change the price of hot dogs so often before it gets boring. I am tempted to play through another season just so I can do something silly, like move the Packers to Mexico City (just because I CAN), but outside of that, there's little reason to pick it up again. I have a feeling I'll be spending much more time with ESPN NFL Football in the future.

Am I the only one who finds it hysterical that ESPN has a football game, but they advertise the HELL out of their competition (MADDEN on that NFL show with Suzy, and 2 guys whos names fail me because I just got a flashback to Nameth checking out her ass, one is Merrel Hodge?)

Suzy Kolber, Merril Hoge, and Ron Jaworski.

Don't forget, ABC owns ESPN, so it's kinda sorta competition. I was surprised when I saw the switch from Edge Shave Gel this season though, and when they picked a video game sponser, it wasn't the one that their networks name was on.
