I'm not to keen about web economics. How is it that CRZ can host this site with no ads and not ask for money, but OO needs money to stay afloat, with about 100 ads popping up?

Is the answer somewhere in there and I'm just not seeing it?

C'mon, this is easy. When CRZ is talking to the likes of Ric Flair and Vince during RAW and Smackdown, what do you think they are talking about? Of course, business. WWF funds CRZ.

I'm pretty sure that the short form looks like this:

GuruZim and CRZ (and others, methinks) administer the board, features, design, etc. So no paying someone to do it for them.

The Brothers Zim are also capable Unix administrators; CRZ admins the main slash site on Solaris and Guru does the Debian x86 installation for the board. So no paying someone to do it for them.

CRZ works at XO communications. Some quick checking reveals that both the board and the main site look up to be xo.com.mx. Sounds like `free' hosting to me (probably under agreement with XO that bandwidth doesn't exceed Xmb/mo). So no paying for bandwidth.

So, it's the Zim brothers on a box in Mexico.

Ergo [/slash] is entirely the product of CHILD LABOR.

Mr. Scaia doesn't have access to cheap (as in free) bandwidth, is not an administrator of any kind, and probably only knows enough HTML to make his own life difficult (and I don't mean that as an insult). So he's got to pay for these things. And frankly, though admin and design wouldn't be that bad, bandwidth is expensive.

Plus, as much as we like to think of CRZ as a god among men and Internet writers, I'm pretty sure Scaia has a significantly larger audience.

I think that all about sums it up. Websites are not cheap to run. And really, with the amount of time and content CRZ and GuruZim provide on this board, I'd say it's still pretty expensive just in terms of time alone.

There's a long story behind xo.com.mx which I won't reveal in case I ever get sued...but that's some REAL nice detective work there. ;-)

I'll confirm ALMOST everything tarnish said and be purposefully vague on the rest. (Rick gets more hitz than me? Perish the thought!)

So you need more money when you need to support more "hits" because of bandwidth?

Or CRZ is capable of hosting so many people with no pop up ads because he has hoox0r ups to a healthy amount of bandwidth?

Just seems really weird that Scaia sounds like he needs money so bad he's about to go out of business, and has so many pop up ads, but slashwrestling looks about the same as onlineonslaught in terms of content.

Thanks for the website economics lesson. =P

Well, both, really.

The OnlineOnslaught.com index page circa right now is about 32Kb (to the nearest allocation unit on my hard drive), meaning that the site incurs 1Mb of traffic for every 32 users who visit the index page alone. And that doesn't include any locally-stored images. Now, mind you, I don't know what the logistics of things are with respect to browser caching vs. dynamic content, but if that's the ``average visit'' to the site, he's going to use 3MB of bandwidth for every hundred hits. If you're paying for bandwidth, you've got to offset the cost somehow...

I think CRZ uses the Power of the Warrior to fund his site.
