You ever invest a good deal of time into a game and then reach a point where the object is just so ridiculus that you just up and quit? Well I have reached that point with good ole Max Payne. Yes, many of you have played this one years ago and probably have beaten it as well, but fuck that shit ... I give up! The damn inferno kitchen is just too tough to get through and I really don't see how there is skill involved with it. I even looked up the way to get out and I still can't do it. So, I quit and I doubt I'll ever pick this game up again, which in a way saddens me a little because it wasn't a bad game up to that point. There's very little trial and error and it's just a mad dash.

I quit another game a long time ago. Red Faction II. I made it all the way to the end only to have the last guy be something that you had to sit there and mash buttons to beat. I'm sure if I had stuck with it long enough I could have finally beat him by mashing the right buttons and getting lucky, but once again there was little skill involved.

Fuck both those games.

The key to the flaming kitchen is to quicksave, try a path, die, quickload and go the other way.

It is a bit annoying given how little it has in common with the rest of the game, but the end of Max Payne is worth it.

And besides, then you can play Max Payne 2.

You know how when you die, and the camera pans around you? Well at this part of the game, you can get a good look at what parts of the kitchen haven't exploded yet, showing you which way to go. Also, make sure you have a pile of pain pills on hand, and you can take some fire damage while doing the maze. It was tough, but I agree w/ Carl, it's worth it.

The freaking dream sequence blood maze, on the other hand...

I get sad when I buy a game and give up on it as well. I gave up on LOTR:FOTR for the GBA.. but it was a pretty terrible game with lots of bugs in it--BUGS??, those are usually unheard of in console games.

I also had this pokemon-like game for GBC called Magi-Nation. It was kind of weird, and I got sad because you could only save one game at a time, and I accidentally moved on to a later part of the game without collecting a bunch of items from earlier on, so I couldn't go back and get them, so I just gave up :-(

alrighty then.. I've mostly gotten over these losses--

best, socetew

Alright, fine after reading these posts I went and gave it a try just to give it one last shot and by gawd I passed the damn level. Then of course there is another of the blood trail levels shorty after. I will stick with it though thanks to Wieners of this board.

I've never played Max Payne 2, but I have a healthy loathing for the trail of blood dream-maze at the beginning of Act 2. If you've gone through it with the volume up (and constantly died during it), you understand my plight. My roommate had it last year ... played with the volume cranked. Drove me insane. Didn't help that it took him about 5 hours to make it through that part, too.

The mute button is your dream maze friend.

Oh Yes, oh yes it is!

Congratulations, BDL - hope you find it worth it.

Don't say "I QUIT"...put it away and try it again some other time. I've recently started playing Final Fantasy VIII again, and it's become worth the effort to work through the problems I never could figure out.

However, one game I had to say "F*ck this sh*t" would be Wrestlemania 2000 and No Mercy for the N64, because the computer characters were TOO DAMN TOUGH.

Congrats on sticking to it. If it's any consolation, those godforsaken blood-trail dreams were mercilessly slaughtered and replaced with actual, surrealist dream sequences in MP2 (COMPLETE WITH HARDCORE NUDITY!).

As to No Mercy, while some of those later fights were in fact freakishly, freakishly challenging--sometimes in skill, usually because they were just utterly freakin' cheap--the moment wherein in tandem with my victorious 3-count I sprung out of my seat and cried "EAT IT" was generally enough to make it worthwhile.

Okay, it's done and over with. I am glad that I toughed it out. Although I still don't understand what his wife knew to get her killed. Now I'm sad that it's all over. Is Max Payne 2 any good? I saw some sketchy reviews.
