Let me say first that I like RVD, I really do. Ive been impressed with him ever since he debuted last year. I think hes got a future with the WWF without a doubt but unlike some I think hes years away from being a main eventer. Hes missing something crucial and it just hit me in the last month.

Rob Van Dam cannot throw a punch.

Some may not agree but throwing a good punch is crucial to being truly over. Its an important part of ring psychology. Im not saying that he should just punch and kick his way through matches but the he definitely needs to learn to brawl a little bit. All those pretty flips and all that agility is good but he needs that "I can kick your ass" air that all the other main eventers have. And he definitely needs to improve his weak looking punch. During his fued with Goldust, everytime RVD would try to get a beatdown on Goldust I found myself disappointed because he couldnt make the beatdown look credible until he hit a 5 star or a rolling thunder or something like that. Anyway all Im saying is that until RVD learns to brawl a little he wont truly be ready for the big time.

I am sure that the many wrestlers that have contributed to the Van Dam blood drive would disagree with you.

Van Dam can go all the way, baby!

I think the points about Van Dam's brawling skills being less than stellar were more valid during his time when he was in ECW. Also then, his spots always seemed really laboured IMO. It seemed that he was always spending five minutes setting up for a spot and the flow of the match was interupted and seemed stilted as a result. Since he's been in the WWF, though, I think he has got so much better at all the little things and I really enjoy RVD matches nowadays (mainly because he is so different to anybody else out there, and choice is good). I think the Goldust match wasn't indicative of him generally, but what rockdotcom_2.0 was saying was true, to paraphrase someone else "he wasn't catching what Goldust was throwing". Overall, though, I'd take RVD as one of the better sellers out there I mean the art of selling your own finisher like RVD does was almost completely lost.

Anyway, in answer to the thread, I think RVD can make World champ/main event level sooner rather than later. It all depends on how long the WWF can ignore his amazing face heat, and let's hope they capitalise on it before it dries out (re: Jerry Lynn's year too late ECW title run).

I don't think not being able to much has stopped The Rock from going anywhere.

He can go as far as "Mr. MacMahon" lets him .

Hell , since when did you have to have skills to be a main eventer ? See Hulk Hogan .

I also think the RVD era will begin at WM, that is unless he gets involved in a 6 month feud with Regal or the Big Show that sucks the heat out of him.

And is it just me or did Edge and Christian both become the Marty Janetty of their breakup?

On the contrary I think the Rock throws a good punch. And he can brawl with the best of them. Thats what Im saying about RVD. He lacks the ability to brawl with conviction.

I can see RVD winning the IC title at WM18 and holding it for a good while, but I still dont see him entering the main event mix for at least another year. The main event picture is just way too crowded right now, and they still have to bring back Benoit in the near future.

Well someone who has rock's name in his user name would think he is a good brawler, eh? Just like I think Lance Storm is awesome and he's in my sig.

Anyway, The Rock has probably the weakest punches (except for maybe RVD) in the entire WWF. Can he brawl in other ways other than his punches? Sure he's pretty good. Not as good as Stone Cold, Angle, Benoit, HHH, and the other main eventers, and not as good as RVD too. Yeah, like I said RVD has weaker punches than the Rock, but he can brawl in other ways, after all this is a guy who kicks a chair into someone's face. If that isn't brawling, I don't know what is.

I really dont consider what RVD does as brawling. Like I said when he tried to do a run in to get a beatdown on GOldust last month during their mini-fued his beatdowns looked weak until he took to the air. I just think other than his high flying offense and his rolling thunders and similar moves, the guy needs more offensive moves. Like a good punch. And I refuse to get into a debate about the Rock.

I would say that the reason RVD's spots aren't so drawn out and stilted anymore is due to three things: 1) RVD has a bit more experience now, and should therefore be performing better. 2) The quality of the talent that he's working with is loads better. They don't get lost in their matches, and they usually know how to cater directly to everybody else's spots. 3) The WWF Camera/Production Crew. If RVD is in a tag match, they're good at working the camera so that if there is any 'down time' between spots for RVD they've always got the camera on something else.

RVD will make the main event. Hell, he main evented on PPV last year, and I seriously doubt it'll be the last. In fact, I'll make a bold prediction (and if I'm wrong, who cares? Doesn't cost me anything): Next year, RVD will be the face chasing the title into Wrestlemania, and will walk out with the belt(s).

As for his lack of brawling skills, I agree his punches don't always look good. But neither do a lot of main eventers. Hogan's are pathetic. Rock's tend to be uneven until the spit punch, when he usually lays it on pretty good. And Austin's are usually good except after the Thesz press, when they can be downright pathetic. I seem to recall similar questions about Angle's brawling abilities as he began to rise to the top...and last year he produced quite a few brutal, psychotic brawls with both Austin and Shane McMahon of all people. RVD gets a little bit better all the time, and has ever since he's gotten to the WWF. I'm confident he'll be able to add to his brawling repertoire by the time he makes the big dance.

Rock used to throw the best punch in the WWF, they don't look as good anymore though. Anyway, onto this RVD thing. I remember when he attacked Goldust a couple weeks ago and was straddeling him, punching him, and all I could do is laugh. He looked like a cross between Lita (with her no-contact flailing) and Chyna (with her stupid looking forearms). I don't think this will stop him from main eventing though. What will hurt him is his mic skills. He's going to get killed on the mic the first time he steps up and has to do a "main event" feud (i.e. wrestle AND talk). The guy is a joke on the mic, his promo before No Way Out looked like something from a rejected Tough Enough try-out video. I think putting him on the mic is going to kill his momentum, it hurt the Hardys big time and he's no better than them.

Bring Bill Alfonso in and turn RVD heel .

I think Fonzie and RVD could have potential together , especially since RVD is in desperate need of a mouth piece .
I always liked the work they did together with Sabu in pre TNN ECW .

Hell , reform that stable , and as crazy this might sound , give him Bob Holly as his partner . Think
about it , with Bob Holly's " How Do you Like Me Now " gimmick and RVD's " Points To Self " gimmick , that could make for some funny TV , kind of like the gimmick RVD and Sabu had going on in ECW , you know , the constant bickering over who had the most belts and who's better .

Plus , RVD can do a dead on Bill Alfonao impersonation .

Just a thought .

Only way I'll like that team is if it lasts for one match...which ends with Holly busting a candy jar over RVD's head and leaving. If I ever see RVD and Holly team up, I'll puke.

I think that RVD would make a credible WWF World Heavyweight Champion, if not for one thing:

His interview skills are pretty bloody pathetic. Granted, he doesn't really speak much, but when he does, it's “Cool” this, “Cool” that.

I never watched a single ECW program so I've never seen a Bill Alfonso interview. But if he can help RVD interview-wise, more power to him. RVD needs that right now to get to the next level.

As it is, I definitely see him leaving WrestleMania as the Intercontinental Champion.

In response to the question about “have Edge and Christian both become the Marty Jannetty of their breakup?” I think right now, a case can be made for that. Edge is a very credible I-C Champion, but the long feud with Regal really sucked a lot of the heat out of him. Christian, ever since losing the I-C Title back to Edge, has gone back to being primarily a tag-team wrestler.

I think re-forming the E&C team might be the best way to go. But they shouldn't kill either guy's singles push, either-- rather, the team should be highlighted second, while each individual is put over in quality singles matches. Both men can end up being a great singles star-- they just need to be used better than they have been.

At least, that's my opinion.

I dont know, I like RVD, but i have a problem for some reason with a Champion using a top rope flying move. I would rather see it be a power move. However, he does do such a good job of selling the frog splash that I could settle for it.

Hey , Bob Holly needs something or somebody to get him over , because the only thing he is ruling right now is obscurity .
