Next year John Madden will be doing commentary with Al Michaels on Monday Night Football. Dennis Miller and Dan Fouts will "Exit Stage Left" and leave a 2-man booth. It is going to be something to hear how this works out. Al is alot more talkative and opinionnated that Pat Summerall. But that GOD Dennis Miller is off my TV on Monday nights.

Thank God for CBS Radio Sports. Now, I won't EVER have to listen to Madden again.

Dan, Dennis, and Eric have been let go. Just Al, John, and Melissa on MNF.

Well that's just poor. I liked Dennis Miller, and I really liked Dan Fouts. Madden on the other hand has added nothing to a game for me in years. If this were the WWF, this would be called "hot shotting" and a "Ratings grab" and it would be the truth.

IMO dan fouts is an outstanding commentator who not only knows what he's talking about, but he gets that point across to the audience. while madden knows his stuff, it's getting harder and harder to see that when he starts opening up his mouth.
i didn't mind miller because some of the best/funniest moments were when he would tell one of his incredibly funny jokes which was followed by a length silence.

The problem with Madden in recent years is that as Pat Summerall's ability to call games has decreased so dramatically, Madden has reduced himself to constantly talking about nothing it seems to keep Pat from saying too much. With Al Michaels as the maestro, I think Madden's act will be seriously toned down. I don't see Madden going to the telestrator to circle Reggie Roby's watch, a random bird on the sideline, or some fat guy in the audience with food on his face because it won't amuse Al like it did Pat.

Plus, it gives Madden a fresh start. He was basically kissing the ass of either Troy Aikman, Brett Favre, or the 49ers for the last decade. Now he's got to learn the names of some AFC teams

But the key is keeping Melissa Stark. Does sideline reporting get any cuter than her? Bonnie Bernstein and Jill Arrington are hotter, but Melissa is such a cutie I just can't wait for someone to get injured so Al can send it down to Melissa for that detailed injury report.

Well ABC had been trying to get Madden for years now and finally go their man. I think Al and Madden will have to tone down both of thier acts to make it work. It will be something to see though. I hope it works out. Will it be John and Al on Madden 2003?

as long as they got rid of Miller, I'm happy. Getting rid of Dickerson was a good move too. He was useless. But they kept Starks??? She's terrible. Sorry, cuteness doesn't work for me. She talks about nothing but rubbish!

Getting rid of Dan Fouts was a mistake. I hope he joins Fox.

First off, who the hell cares about what sideline reporters SAY?!?! That has to be the most pointless job in sports. It's a complete time filler and gives the booth guys a chance to talk to someone else for a couple minutes. Cute or attractiveness is EVERYTHING. Disagree?

1)Then tell me a time where the sideline reporter got a "scoop" on an injury report that couldn't have been done by a nameless and faceless intern who asks the trainer the player's status and sends a message up to the booth guys to report.

2)Tell me a time where a coach being interviewed either before or at halftime has said anything profound. Before the game, they need to execute their game plan, minimize turnovers, create turnovers, and not give up big plays. At halftime, a)if they're winning they need to remember that there's still 2 quarters to play, need to maintain a high level of play, but could still reduce mistakes to play better; b)if they're losing, they need to come out for the second half with intensity, play smarter, and not make mistakes.

I love Suzy Kolber--you won't be able to convince me that Edge NFL Matchup isn't the best show on TV. But, Stark has "friend you so wanted to bang" written all over her.

Very well put my friend. I couldnt agree more. Sideline reporters are useless, which is why it was so painful having to watch Eric Dickerson fuck up constantly. He was awful, I mean the guy was 10 yards from the action and he seemed like he had no idea what was going on on the field. Remember that game where he made the statement that the Packers (I think it was them) need to pick up their defense when they were on OFFENSE. Just terrible. As far as Fouts goes, I hope ABC is smart and keeps him. Maybe they can move him to an ESPN crew or put him on NFL Countdown with Boomer and the boys. As for MIller, He didnt bug me too much. But I wont really miss him either.

Sorry dude, but you are confusing me! Are you agreeing, disagreeing (or both) with me? In my last post, by saying that Dickerson and Starks are bad, I'm implying that sideline reporters are useless (unless you are Cris Carter and like to bump into them! Read: Pam Olvier). Which is what you said. But then your (1) and (2) examples seems like you disagree with me?

Personally I think Tony Kornheiser would be a great 3rd man in the MNF booth. Put Michael Wilbon with Chris Berman in the studios with Melissa Stark and "The Sports Guy" Bill Simmons on the sidelines, now that would be a show. I would tape Raw just to watch MNF.

What I inferred from your post was that E.D. and Stark were both terrible, but that someone somewhere would be a good sideline reporter. I said that cuteness was my only criterion for the sideline reporter, and you said that that wasn't enough for you, implying you have some kind of actual standard of ability. Nowhere did I get the sense that your comments were meant as an indictment of sideline reporting as a "profession," so to speak.

My examples were meant to be the standard form of every report and interview a sideline reporter has ever done, providing evidence for their worthlessness.

So if you believe that sideline reporting in general is pointless--we agree with each other. Where we apparently disagree is in keeping the sideline reporters for their looks.

Clearer?

Suzy Kolber does in fact, rule. I never "got" the Melissa Stark thing. She's waaaay to thin, and Bonnie Bernstein is a cutie too.

I'm not that big a fan of the sideline reporter either tho. They usually have very little to add to the game and the coaches that have to talk to them on the way to or from the lockerrom at halftime say the same things over and over and over. It's really a waste.

I hope the change for Madden returns him to his early-years form. I used to really like him, but his act has gotten so old...

At least we don't have to put up with his Thanksgiving crap again...

I like the idea of Micheals and Madden.

Fouts will land on his feet somewhere, and become the #1 guy at either Fox or CBS. Dickerson will land somewhere too, for better or worse. Miller will land back on HBO.

Melissa Starks = MEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOW!

Fouts is supposed to be going to College Football so don't shed any tears for him. But Madden was not really that bad. Pat really is the one that dropped the ball the past few years. Pat sounded like he was ready to meet his maker the past few years and made many mistakes that John had to cover for. I think Pat brought John to his level. It is hard to keep a show going on all cylinders when half of your engine is falling apart.

I look forward to this to see how it works out. I am a Madden Mark anyway.

I'm surprise how much wienerville love Fouts is getting. I think he is horrible. In fact, when it came to actual football analysis, I thought Dennis freakin' Miller was the better of the two, and that's just sad. The best thing about Madden coming was that it meant that Miller, Fouts, and Dickerson going.

I agree though that Madden is not close to being the top analyst in the game anymore, even though he still gets credited with that by critics. I honestly think that title may already go to Moose Johnson and Troy Aikman, even though they are new. Paul McGuire and Phil Simms are pretty good too.

Melissa Stark meets the requirements of a sideline reporter, mastery of the English language (that's why Eric had to go). Sideline reporting is not rocket science, so she does fine (of course, so did Lynn Swann and Lesley Visser, but they got fired too).

And Suzy Kolber does indeed rule.
