Incidentally, why did it take until now to get "Downer" meat banned? That just seems to be one of those obvious things to deal with...

"Sick" cattle were never to be in the human food supply. "Downer" cattle ae typically those that broke a leg or sustained some other injury that wouldn't allow them to walk and/or stand.

Grimis the other impact on the industry is setting a maximun age beyond which cattle cannot enter the human food supply. Although that really only impacts the dairy industry alot. Beef producers turn cattle over within 18 to 24 months.

I didn't see any mention in Grimis' article of banning downer cattle from use in feed for other cattle (which I believe was the major reason so much of the cattle in Britain was infected).

It seems this ban would do little or nothing to lower the risks of infections.

Incidentally, anyone look into what might be the cause Mad Cow and CJD? Pretty scary stuff, which may explain the hype...

From the Washington Post:

The Agriculture Department's announcement yesterday of a ban on the sale of meat from ailing "downer" cattle marked a policy turnabout for the Bush administration, coming only a few weeks after the department and allies in the powerful meat lobby blocked an identical measure in Congress.

Uh-oh.

Also, I bet Rep. Gary Ackerman thinks he's the wittiest guy in D.C. right now with his "shot themselves in the hoof" comment.

That was already done under the "evil" Clinton administration. I believe they may still be used in dog food etc.
