So I am reading the Cubs page and they are just moving around minor players. The Red Sox just don't make it and they sign Shilling, go for A-Rod and all the rest. The Cubs sign another .240 catcher (Can you say "PUDGE IS OUT THERE!!!!), another medium good outfielder, another utility infielder, a fair 1st baseman in Lee and a fairly good lefty setup man.

But they let Simon go, they let Lofton go - hey, at least they let Miller go (Yay!)

Un-leash hell - sign PUDGE!

AWA losing Lofton isn't a big deal and I think George is out of his mind. His still has some offensive skills but in the outfield. eh. Not what he once used to be. The Cubs have a potentially great rotation and I'm not sure not signing Pudge is that big a deal.

As a lifelong Cubbies fan, I will agree that a major signing needs to happen. Yes, our catching situation hasn't improved much, but if I were Hendry, I'd sign Maddux before Pudge. Pudge is expensive, and while great, isn't going to have a lasting effect. Maddux's experience could be great for the young pitching staff.

Of course, you won't hear me *complaining* if they sign Pudge. *g*

And I'm okay with losing Lofton and Simon. Simon was good, but he also swings at everything, which bugs me.

I had a nice reply all ready to go breaking down the Cubs' moves this offseason, but my computer froze. In short, I can't really argue much with any of the signings this offseason, and there are no tears in my beer for who they've let go. My only question is: Who hits leadoff? Will it be Grudz? Or will they try to work Patterson in at leadoff again, and bat Grudz second? (Gets my vote.)

They're saying he's going to be the backup and a left-handed bat off the bench.

Like I said, guys like Walker and the rest.. I say, all good. I like Lee over Simon. I absolutely loved Lofton on the team. I am not convinced with Patterson (strikes out too much to be a leadoff hitter, and has only had one third good season. Grudz seems like a good hand, but I am glad they have Walker behind him.

I like 1st, like 2nd, Short is pretty good and I love 3rd like no time since Cey, or Santo, fer Goodness sake.

Outfield is good, except, like I said, Patterson still has to prove it to me. I think Moises is getting up there and one thing could take him down, which is why Todd Hollandsworth was a good get for them.

Catcher don't impress me. Mike Barrett hasn't exactly torn 'em up the last few years and Paul Bako is "good field, no hit." We've had too many of them over the years since Randy. Heck, I'd take Jody Davis back. At least this Barrett is a strike-out man. Contact hitter, they say. Pudge might cost 'em, but that's what we really need to push it over the top.

Starters are fantastic, but we could use a more power closer. Joe filled in like a MAN this year, but, let face it: He's a set-up man.

my opinion: Do the one big get and pay Pudge for 5 seasons and see what happens

I think I'd go the other way around and have Grudz leading off, Patterson hitting second. Maybe I'm just incredibly old-school, but I like having a left-handed bat with some pop in the #2 hole. He can normally be relied on to hit behind the runner, but can also knock him in with a double.

The thing that worries me about the Cubs' lineup this year is the same thing that worried me last year: the lack of lefty bats in general. Yes, yes, I know good hitters can hit both lefties and righties, and that the Marlins won the Series with the three through eight holes all batting righty, but there isn't much reason not to at least try to play the percentages and/or force the other manager to make more pitching changes than he'd like or face the consequences. And I counter the righty-dominated Marlins of this year with the 2002 Angels with their perfectly balanced lineup that collectively was far better than the players who made it up. That's why, although I like Lee overall better than Choi and Simon, I think either of the latter two would have been a better fit in this lineup, right in the six hole behind Sammy, Ramirez, and Alou.

If I were running the Cubbies, I think I'd start scouting around for a big left-handed outfield bat to replace Alou. It won't happen this year, and while I like Hollandsworth, he's certainly not the answer. Maybe my Reds will finally make themselves better by unloading Junior? ;)

Between Patterson and Grudz, I'd put Grudz in the leadoff spot, but now that we have Walker, there's no telling who the starting 2b is going to be. The word now is that Walker is going to be backup, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he made a serious run for the starting lineup.

I think Grudz earned the starting spot, but let's face it: Gruds is a lifetime .285 hitter with 9 solid seasons. Walker is is a .290 hitter with 6 or 7, modeling a few Uniforms.

Similar players - similar stats - both can play, I am glad we have both of them.
