Elvis Costello - Oliver's Army, Clubland
The Cars - Best Friend's Girl

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax!

Not sure if all (or any) of these would qualify for new wave, but . . .

Icicle Works - Whisper to a Scream
Talk Talk - Talk Talk
Talk Talk - It's my Life
Hipsway - The Honeythief
Arcadia - Goodbye is Forever
When in Rome - The Promise
Boy's Don't Cry - I Wanna be a Cowboy
Orchestral Manouevers in the Dark - So in Love
New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle
Real Life - Catch me I'm Falling

I'm going to an 80's party my wife's friend is throwing this weekend, and would make a good mix CD out of my "new wave" stuff, but of course, most of them think of 80's new wave as Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, etc. *sigh*

pray for me

Since I am older than everybody else here, I remember some of these bands by actually seeing them perform in alcohol serving venues!

I saw a great double bill at the Orpheum in Boston back in the day with the Thompson Twins and Reflex.

Joe "King" Carrasco and the Crowns with A Flock of Seagulls.

Lords of the New Church in a Boston club that held about 100 people. I guess they weren't really new wave as just kind of punky weird.

As for the songs:

Love the Plimsouls - Million Miles Away
A Flock of Seagulls - I Ran
Anything by Heaven 17
Early Cure - Jumping Someone Else's Train/Boys Don't Cry
Any and all Talk Talk

Here's my terrific ten:

DEVO - Girl U Want
Hubert KaH - Rosemarie
Talking Heads - Air
Wall of Voodoo - Back in Flesh
Die Doraus & die Marinas - Fred vom Jupiter
The Cars - Double Life
The Vapors - Lenina
Athletico Spizz '80 - Where's Captain Kirk?
Men Without Hats - Ideas for Walls
Elvis Costello - Lipstick Vogue

Everyone interested in new wave should check out the German branch of it, NEUE DEUTSCHE WELLE--tons of interesting and novel bands.

The Cure - Fascination Street
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence & Personal Jesus
The Thompson Twins - Lies
Tears for Fears - Shout
Peter Gabriel - Shock the Monkey

For the most part I guess you could say I like obscure songs by popular bands :)

I'm not much of a new wave fan, but in an effort to further blur the lines between threads, I feel I must mention that I bought a Men Without Hats bootleg just to hear The Safety Dance live.

Speaking of Men Without Hats, it always bugs me to a certain extent when people call them a one hit wonder, because "Pop Goes the World" was somewhat of a hit for them too. I love that song. Every time I'm in Kroger and they're little music for another annoying announcement of savings comes on, it triggers the chorus of that song for me because of the little keyboard beat.

Yes, I am weird like that, why do you ask?

Every true new wave fan needs the new Go-G0's live in central park DVD. They rule the music world. Everytime I see and hear Charlotte Caffey play guitar, I can't pay attention to anything else.

I was lucky enough to see Charlotte Caffey and Jane Weidlin open up for Matthew Sweet here in Louisville a few years ago. Good show. Jane wore the same "Astro Boy" t-shirt I saw her in when she opened up for the Lemonheads in Cincinnati a year or so before that.

Best part of the show tho was after having to travel to Indy, Cincinnati, Nashville, etc. to see Matthew Sweet, he played a club almost across the street from my old apartment. After hanging out to get my picture taken with him, etc., I walked home. Too cool!!

Dude! Which album was he touring for?

I met Matthew Sweet outside Axis in Boston...my wife and I were early for the show, and we were waiting outside. I was wearing my Blue Sky On Mars hat (long since retired), and all of a sudden, f'n Matthew Sweet comes out of the club. I immediately gave my hat to the wife to wear, 'cause I didn't wanna seem like a dork. He came up to us, said "Hey, how's it going?" we said "Great, it's a pleasure to meet you" and he went on his tour bus. Ended up playing "Thunderstorm" that night, but turned up his nose at "Scooby-Doo". Oh, and "Sick of Myself" had about 14 false endings.

For some reason, I really like Doctor and the Medics' "Spirit in the Sky."

I listened to Canadian radio during that time (being near the border) and watched "Good Rockin' Tonight," so I really liked some Canadian bands that are virtually unheard of in the States, like Gowan and The Box.

In high school, I was, in fact, obsessed with both Gowan and Howard Jones. (And Siouxsie, but for different reasons.)

Who else? Baltimora? Falco? Cats Can Fly? Hmmm.

Lou,

I believe it was for Blue Sky on Mars. I had seen him in Indy about a week before the album came out and then he hit Louisville a few months later. I've met him after the show almost every time I've seen him. It was too cold after the Indy show and I had a 2hr drive home, and at the Nashville show last year I had my wife and best friend in tow and a 2 1/2 drive home.

He's very accomodating to his fans who are willing to wait around for a while to hang out with him for a few seconds. I know I always appreciate it.
