Example: A team gives a 5-year contract with a $5 million dollar bonus. Only $1 million counts on this year's cap, giving the team more room to sign other players for this year.
Of course, if the player gets released the entire remainder of the signing bonus get put toward the cap right away. That's part of the reason you're seeing so many guys get released now instead of after June 1, because the cap value would roll over. It's also part of the reason teams like the Cowboys get so bad. I think they had like $25 million toward last year's cap committed to players not on the team anymore. | SerWolfe
