Injured backup to injured McNair out for year news services

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Titans backup quarterback Billy Volek will miss the rest of the season after lacerating his spleen during his first NFL start.

"It's one of those things that he would miss eight weeks at best," team spokesman Robbie Bohren said Tuesday.

The Titans' backup quarterback to Steve McNair, Volek was hurt Sunday when he led Tennessee to a 28-26 victory over Buffalo. He threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another while substituting for McNair, who has an injured left ankle and strained right calf.

McNair, who was the second quarterback Sunday, is likely to start this week. He had played 43 straight games until missing the Bills' game. He has a cracked bone spur in his injured ankle.

Meanwhile, Neil O'Donnell was in Nashville on Tuesday,'s Len Pasquarelli reports, and wants to play again. The Titans would like to have him, but both sides do not have an agreement in principle. The sides are working toward getting a deal done by day's end.

The Titans have scheduled a 5 p.m. ET news conference to discuss Volek's situation. There was no immediate word as to whether an O'Donnell deal would be done by that time.

O'Donnell was released by the Titans at the end of training camp for the second time this season.

The Titans originally reported Volek had soreness in his ribs. Volek complained of abdominal pain and was admitted to Baptist Hospital that night.

Volek's father, John Volek, said from Rocklin, Calif., that his son is angry he won't get another chance this season.

"He wanted an opportunity to play, and now it's been taken away," John Volek said.

The team's only healthy quarterback right now is rookie Jason Gesser, who has never taken an NFL snap.

Gesser, signed as an undrafted free agent, shared the Pac-10's offensive player of the year award with Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer, the No. 1 overall pick in this season's draft.

The Titans could sign Neil O'Donnell, who spent the 1999-2002 seasons with the Titans but was cut at the end of training camp. O'Donnell still has a home in Nashville.

The Titans (10-4) can clinch their fourth playoff berth in five seasons Sunday with a victory over Houston or a loss by either Baltimore, Cincinnati or Miami.

If the O'Donnell deal doesn't work out, I hope somebody mentions Jeff George, just for the uproar it'll cause.

That sucks a lot for Volek. He did a great job in his first start, and it's always fun to see the younger guys go out and take care of business.

Having had the pleasure to watch Jason Gesser for three years, I think if he had to start on Sunday the Titans would be in fair shape at QB. Gesser is reminds me of Jeff Garcia in a lot of ways and I was fairly surprised he wasn't drafted.

I heard that at about 6:30 this morning ... I was like "What?" ... I listened to the Jeff Fisher press conference this afternoon and he seemed pretty optimistic about getting O'Donnell. Neil did a lot of god things while he was here in Nashville ... I'm glad to see him get a chance to come back.

It does suck for Volek. He played about as good as you could expect against the Bills. He's a trooper and I hope he re-signs with the Titans in the offseason ...

Though I would like to see what Gesser could do ... He was Co-Pac 10 player of the year last year with Carson Palmer.

It's damn good thing I don't make the decisions for the Titans ... you see how indecisive I am about this.
