Man Bill Belichick is having a heck of a year as well. The Pats has had tons of injury and lost some key players due to the Salary Cap. After losing their first game I thought The Pats would go to a free fall but after that they have lost only one other game and are having a hell of a season... Speaking of hell of a season you have to look at Chiefs and what Dick Vermeil is doing there
You also have to be impressed Parcells, love him or hate him, he took a bad team in a pressure city and turned them around. But The Cowboys lost there last 3 of 4 games so it seems like they are coming back to reality... Andy Reid in Philly and Jeff Fisher in Tennessee are both doing fine jobs for their team.
So who do you think deserves the nod as Coach of the Year. My picks 1) Marvin Lewis. 2)Bill Belichick. 3)Bill Parcells... But man one and two for me are close. Parcells with a slight edge over Vermeil for third. | Promote this thread! |             | Mayhem

And the big thing is that he will be 7-0 against teams with winning records. While taking nothing away from what Lweis has done this year he is simply not the best coach in the league right now.
The Pats have had 41 different starters so far this year. Lost both their #1 and #2 receivers for big chunks of the year. Huge losses on Defense with Ted Washinton gone for 6 games and
Rosevelt Colvin for the year (I still think after Vick, Colvin is as big of a lost as any other team has had this year).
Belichick has done this with Rookies, 2nd and 3rd stringers, and with GREAT gameplans. That is why I think he should be Coach of the year. | Zeruel

It's a toss up between Blichick and Lewis. IMO, the nod goes to Belichick who took all the turmoil at the start of the season plus a plethora of injuries and put together one Hell of a season. Lewis Two and Verneil three, Parcells four. The smoke and mirrors defense that KC put together amazed me, and Parcells got the most with limited talent. | JayJayDean

Two guys who haven't been mentioned but I think deserve some credit are Brian Billick (nah, that's ok, I DON'T need a quarterback) and Mike Tice. They can be "Co-Coach of the Year: Teams with Purple Jerseys Division".

However....the Patriots, with all of their problems and injuries, were still a preseason pick to make the playoffs, and some pundits (i.e. me in my school newspaper column lol) actually picked them to win the AFC. Even in the cases of Vermeil and Parcells, they were taking over teams that had been unsuccessful, but at least had solid nuclei upon which to build.
Marvin Lewis, however, took one of the worst franchises in SPORTS, let alone the NFL, and made them respectable. That is a landmark achievement. | drjayphd

My ballot splits first between Belichick and Lewis. If someone pointed a shotgun at my nards, though, and made me choose, I'm'a say Lewis, but Belichick is really 1A. Credit to John Fox, but not a TON of credit... that goes to the GM for signing Stephen Davis (the only reason I'd fear the Redskins when they had him). Capers gets some dap too, and he probably would've last year, as well.

If Cincinnati stays strong through the end of the year, it has to go to them. They didn't look good against Baltimore last week, but if they can bounce back and finish strong, Marvin Lewis is your man. That team was the punchline to a bad joke for how many seasons now, yet almost overnight they're a legit contender for a division title? Amazing. If they crap out and finish below .500, though, maybe it's not so automatic.
Three weeks ago I would have said Bill Parcells is right there with Lewis, but the Cowboys have come back to earth in a big way the last couple of weeks. Looks like they were just playing over their heads early this year as opposed to being a legitimately strong team.
Dom Capers? Nah. He's got a competitive team in that the Texans are in a lot of games, but they were in a lot of games last year as well. They were a team that didn't win much but never really got blown out either. They're still at that point, which tells me they haven't made all that much progress this year. A serviceable job from Capers, but nothing outstanding.
At this point, I say give it to Lewis, but there are still three weeks worth of games left. How teams on the bubble finish says as much about a coach as how much he gets out of them over the first 16 weeks. |
