Also keep in mind. The pollsters don't have to vote for number on in the BCS. If USC does play Michigan and beat them then that's a great win. Some people think Michigan is the best team even though they have to losses. They could still be number one in the polls which would make them co-champions wouldn't it?

LSU vs. OU - SUGAR BOWL
USC vs. MICH - ROSE BOWL
FSU vs. MIAMI - FLORIDA BOWL
OSU vs. KSU - FIESTA BOWL

via The BCS selection show on ABC & ESPN, SUNDAY NIGHT!

EDIT
IF OU & USC win, there WILL be split champs. OU the BCS & ESPN/COACHES champ, and USC the AP champ.

(edited by rikidozan on 7.12.03 1759)

EDIT 2:
Just for shits and giggles, let us look at the 3 losses.
OU lost to KSU, now ranked #10 in the BCS
LSU lost to Florida, now ranked #15 in the BCS
USC lost to Cal, now ranken #40 in the BCS.

USC has the worst loss.

KSU has an average HUMAN poll ranking of 9
FL has an average of 17
Cal has an average of 45

USC lost to the worst team.

KSU has an average CPU poll ranking of 11.33
FL has an average of 16.50
Cal has an average of 37.67

USC still has lost to the worst team of the 3.

KSU has the 10th best SOS
FL has the 5th best SOS
Cal has the 19th best SOS

Again, USC lost to the weaker team.

True, their margin of defeat was smaller, but being the sucky team Cal is, that is to be expected.
Just something to think about.

EDIT 3
http://www.mratings.com/cf/compare.htm
The College Football Ranking Comparison, which holds rankings from 80 sourses (Which I will try to join next year), AP, ESPN, the BCS computers, and other rankers, have:
OU #1, average ranking 1.41, 60 of the 80 gave then a #1 ranking
LSU #2, avg 2.46, 15/80 gave them a #1
USC #3, avg 3.19, 5/80 #1s
Michigan a distant #4, avg 5.56

OU got 75% of the #1 rankings. The #1 team is in the Sugar Bowl after all...

See the link for all the rankings. The ranking on the far left is the one that most agrees with the Consensus (SportsDoc's rankings this week) and the one on the far right column is the one that's most out of whack with everyone else (YourLinx's rankings, and they have been most out of whack all season).

Isn't this exactly why the BCS was put in place...to avoid this from happening? :)

Interesting that the Orange Bowl wound up with the FSU/Miami rematch when they wanted the OSU/Miami rematch.

Wonder how many people will care about Ohio State/K-State...

After today's decable, I don't think the BCS apologists have any more ammo to defend against the criticisms that the BCS is in indeed a big joke.

USC lost to Cal by 3 in triple overtime in Berkeley.

LSU lost by 12 to Florida at LSU.

OU lost by a God-awful margin vs. K-State on a neutral field.

Yes, Cal is the worst team of the three that beat the one-loss teams. But losing on the road is historically a better loss than losing at home or on a neutral field. All three teams underachieved in their losses.

Keeping the #1 team in the country out of the BCS Championship Game is a joke... well, it'd be more of a joke if the NCAA recognized a national champion in football (they don't).

You'd better believe Disney et al are begging Michigan to win in the Rose Bowl this year. Don't be surprised to see chicanery and even possibly shenanigans at the Grandaddy Of Them All this year.

Time to give this old thread a looksee....

A lot of people had OSU and Michigan going to the BCS bowls, and there are a few USCs, Miamis, Florida States, K-States and Oklahomas in there as well. Nobody seemed to think anything of LSU.

Some of the picks were quite laughably off, and I hate to pick on Grimis because a lot of people were just as inaccurate with their picks, but still....he started the post.

    Sugar Bowl: Oklahoma vs Miami
Fiesta Bowl: Notre Dame vs Virginia Tech
Rose Bowl: Penn State vs Washington
Orange Bowl: North Carolina State vs Auburn

To paraphrase Meat Loaf, two out of eight ain't bad.

I'd say I deserved it. That's what I get for thinking that NC State had it and that OSU would be hurt by the Clarett fisasco.

Of course, ND and PSU have no excuse....

Yeah, I was hoping for the rematch just to stuff some fists in Kellen Winslow's face. As for the OSU-KSU matchup, one customer of our work graduated from KSU, so we're probably gonna hear about this one.

I love the Bucks, but if K-State brings their top game it doesn't look too good.

I absolutely *LOVE* the BCS mess-up, and hope that something will come out of it to lead toward a playoff. I love March madness, NFL playoffs, and (being a Cleveland fan) rooting for the underdog.

And as for the "shit MAC team", since Marshall beat K-State, who beat OU, who may end up #1... ;)

The Fiesta Bowl chose these two teams because each brought 40,000 fans the last time they played in the Fiesta Bowl, so the Fiesta Bowl used their "Economic Choice" to select ahead of the Orange and grab Ohio State. Apparently this can be used 1 time during the contract (Orange used it last year to get Iowa ahead of the Rose Bowl). I guess they figured they would try and get the most bang for the buck from the tourists...

Yes, just more "logic" from the BCS.

Well, I still think the BCS works, simply because the strength of schedule factor that is incorporated into the equation. I still think that is an easy way to settle the "whose loss is worse" debate.

If TCU or Northern Illinois win out, and the rest of the schedules of the top three played out the same way, I doubt anybody would be here saying that the they deserved to be in the national championship game over OU, USC or LSU.

It aint exactly "not broke" but I dont think it needs "fixing" just yet either.

My comment about the Cats getting screwed out of the Fiesta Bowl was sarcasm people. K-State has been sent to third rate bowl games so many times when they were a one or two loss team that we in Cat Country just wait to get screwed. You'll notice the Fiesat Bowl management is very happy with K-State as they travel really well. There aren't many tems in the country with as loyal a following as the Cats.

Wow, looking back at my predictions I did better than usual (but that's not saying much)

I got Oklahoma, Michigan, Miami and USC all in the BCS games (although i had Oklahoma winning the Big 12)

As for my other picks. Well Virginia i basically just picked because I couldn't stand to pick FSU yet again, and I didn't think Maryland and NC State were as good as believed. Wisconsin didn't have Anthony Davis just about the entire season, who was my Heisman pick so that's a big blow for them, but I'm not sure they would've won the Big 10 with him now. Florida I still think could've beaten LSU if they would've jumped Tennessee after the win over FSU they should've gotten. I thought LSU was going go to win the west (wasn't buying the Auburn hype) but didn't think they would have a chance in the SEC Championship. And I picked Notre Dame as a BCS team, don't know what I was thinking there.

Wow. I got K-State. (Hey, why not?) Screwed up on NC State and Georgia - but I almost got 5 out of 6. Definately not bad for not picking the at-large teams. Missed the national champion, but I may get half-credit for beating the team everyone thought should be in the NC game....

And yes, this BCS year is going to be fun.

The Daily Quickie at www.espn.com/page2 had this fairly wacky but intriguing proposal for college football.

How to fix the BCS:

Creating a new BCS demands a radical solution. The problem with incremental revamp suggestions (i.e., four-team playoff) is that they never satisfactorily answer three let's-live-in-the-real-world concerns:

(1) Fairness
Some teams still screwed

(2) Academics
Exam/class schedule conflicts

(3) Money, Money, MONEY
Appeasing bowls ($$$-engine)

With that, here's my proposal:

Weeks 1-5 reserved for:
* 3 TV-friendly games
Rivals, conference, national interest
* 2 "Cupcakes"
Powers: Tune-up, Homecoming
Cupcakes: Get paid, get paid

After 5 weeks of real results: Playoff committee seeds all 117 DI-A teams into a bracket, giving the top 11 teams a first-round "bye" (creating an even 128-team ladder).

Weeks 6-12:
Entire country engaged in one big playoff. As teams lose, they are scheduled against other losing teams, to round out their 12-game schedule. Upshot: Every game really counts.

Schedule done by Thanksgiving:
No impact on players' exams.

Bowls played at usual dates:
Final two teams automatically matched in the title game. And they've earned it. Other bowls filled by remaining eligible teams.

As for those concerns?
Fair: Everyone has a chance
No exclusion; Cinderella factor
Academics: No conflict
Schedule done by T'giving
Money: Bowls still make tons
Huge $ for tourney sponsors

The only problem with that solution is the big ol' change in rivalry weekend. For example, how many times has Ohio State - Michigan counted for a Big Ten Championship? Plus, I don't see the presidents passing up the huge $$$ from the conference championship games. No matter if your teams are crappy or not on the national scale, people show up for a championship game.

Neat idea, though.

Heck if it's a playoff from week 6 on then there is no Big 10 Championship, they might as well throw out all the conferences because you wouldn't be guranteed that you would play the other teams in your conference. Now if you're out of the tournament early you might play other conference teams that were eliminated, but if you go far in the tournament you might not even play any conference teams.

I know that 3 of the 5 first games could be conference games, but that's still not much of a confererence schedule. It just wouldn't be right to me if certain games didn't happen every year.

SEADAWG hasn't come in here and gloat, that's almost as surprising as the K-state win.

Gloating over this game would be like gloating that I was right about the sun coming up this morning. Just 'cause nobody believed me doesn't mean it wasn't DESTINY. FATE. THE PERFECT ALIGNMENT OF THE PLANETS.

But next time I expect everyone to stand behind me in a unwavering display of solidarity.
